REVIEW - LEXINGTON FIELD "Poor Troubled Life" (2012)

Lexington Field "Poor Troubled Life"  New Folk Records NFR 5722
Released date: March 13, 2012
Running time: 17:42, 6 tracks

Lexington Field’s debut album, “Old Dirt Road”, was one of the biggest surprises last year. I guess that their fan base was thinking that they would have to wait till 2013 to get a new Lexington Field recording. However, the boys (and girl) from San Diego have just released another fine recording. No, it’s not a 4 track EP, just to whet appetites. “Poor Troubled Life” is a 6 track EP that shows the different “corners” of our favourite band.

First corner: an instrumental tune. You got it, the opening track “Cripple Creek”. Genuine American  Fiddle Rock.

Second corner: a traditional song fully reworked by the band. Lexington Field has taken the Clancy Brothers “Galway Bay” and had given to it their own treatment. Yes, it’s “Galway Bay”, but a new "Galway Bay", with some Smash Mouth echoes.

Third corner: a “single”. Listen to track no. 4, “Selfish Bastard” and sing along.

Fourth corner: So Cal punk. A couple of great tracks, “Sir Captain Jones” and “Lantern Heart

Fifth corner: something different and fresh. My fave track on the album, “Poor Trouble Life”. No angst, just a wonderful song.

Lexington Field have recently toured California with Hoist the Colors and The Ramshackle Army, their kindred spirits. These bands are not the future of Celtic punk, but the real present. Buy their recordings, they're worth hearing.
