REVIEW - THE BUCCANEERS "Guide Me Home" (2012)

The Buccaneers "Guide Me Home" (2012)
Release date: 18 February 2012
Running time: 35:16, 13 tracks

The Buccaneers’ band members  hail from Germany and Canada. Some people can be misled and think that they are the Canadian band playing an “eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary Celtic/folk music”. However, The Buccaneers from Germany are totally different from the band from Calgary. They play street punk with a Celtic twist.

Guide Me Home” is their third CD. Their previous efforts were “Names and Numbers”(5 tracks, 2007) and “Up the Irons” (13 tracks, 2008). After some line-up changes and the addition of Canadian multi-instumentalists Lindsey O’Connell and Ayron Mortley, The Buccaneers have really become a true Celtic/folk-punk band. The attitude, lyrics and mandolin were always there, but the new traditional instruments are welcome.

This album is a musical sea voyage on which names like “Australia”, “Down Under”, “South Australia Bay” or “Wellington” are mentioned. Metaphors on these shanties and songs about bushrangers written by Philipp Hofmeister. And this is maybe the most important thing on this album, Philipp’s ability to write catchy chorus and tales about places and people that seem to be far away, but in fact are just around the corner. Twelve original songs together with a traditional intro and outro (“Heave Away Me Johnnies”)

Check out these tracks:

Last Goodbye” , a great song, even if it’s too close to Flatfoot 56’s “Courage”; “Edward Kelly” , the song about the well-known bushranger Ned Kelly (awesome accordion and mandolin); “We Want Bail You Out”, with a slight Clash sound at the beginning; “Ship Ya Outta Town”, an old Dropkick Murphys influenced song; “New Friends”, the perfect song to know how these guys live their music; “Take in the Slack”, an excellent shanty with amazing tin whistle, guitar and mandolin and, finally, “The Nomad and The Hun”, more tin whistle and mandolin on a The Men They Couldn’t Hang sounding song.

Enjoy this journey with The Buccaneers!
