REVIEW - Mr. IRISH BASTARD "Never Mind The Bastards - Here Is Mr. Irish. Bollocks" Reedo Records (2011)

Mr. Irish Bastard "Never Mind the Bastards Here Is Mr. Irish Bollocks" Reedo Records (2011)
Release date: 23 September 2011
Running time: 38:40, 12 tracks

Never Mind the Bastards-Here Is Mr. Irish Bollocks” is the title of Mr. Irish Bastard’s fourth album. This is not the first time that an album by an early punk band is fully covered. For instance, Screeching Weasel covered the Ramones full debut album and The Queers covered the Ramones full third album, “Rocket to Russia”. Moreover, it’s not the first time that a Celtic rock/punk band covers the Sex Pistols. A cover of "Holidays in the Sun" can be found on the Swiss band Glen of GuinnessBack & Side” album. However, the originality of Mr. Irish Bastard’s new work is that they are the first band to cover the whole Sex Pistols debut album from a paddypunk approach.

The album has been recorded during eight months in four different studios and the band admits that it keeps a “healthy dose of respect for the original”. It’s true, there is respect, but, at the same time, all the songs get the MIB treatment. And there is a wonderful surprise, MIB used a brass section (sax, trumpet and trombone) on several tracks: “Problems”, “God Save the Queen”, “Anarchy in the UK” and “Submission”.

Tin whistle, banjo and accordion can be found on almost every track. IMHO, the tin whistle arrangements are top-notch and the accordion sounds perfect on tracks such as “Pretty Vacant” (it recalls The PoguesTurkish Song of the Damned”) or "EMI" (it makes me think of The Stranglers’ keyboards on their first and second album).

My faves: “Holidays in the Sun”, “Bodies”, “Problems”, “God Save the Queen”, “Pretty Vacant” and “EMI
