Rein, more an artist collective than a standard music group, are composed by Gianluca Bernardo (voice and acoustic guitar), Luca De Giuliani (electric guitar), Claudio Mancini (guitars and electric organ) e Pierluigi Toni (bass and double bass). Grew up together as a group since the end of the 90’s, Rein experimented a new way to produce and promote music, inspired by the fundamental principle of culture sharing. This choice makes it possible for them to rely on the support of a wide audience, as well as on the attention of media and on the collaboration of numerous artists. Proud of their independence from any discographic label, they sell thousands of copies – not being covered by a classical distribution system – thanks to the word-of-mouth advertising amongst their supporters.
Having already performed hundreds of live concerts, Rein distinguish themselves for their intense live activity, as well as for the ability to bring their music over the defined boundary of the stage.
Stepping over the line that divides artist from the audience, it may happen to see them play on the streets of all over Italy, on the tramways of Rome or in the back of an old van, in the middle of a square flooded by people, during a Carnival celebration. Acknowledged at the same time as one of the most interesting expressions of the independent music environment, they appear on the dates of important international festivals, next to artists such as Patty Smith, Placebo, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Ska-P and Tracy Chapman.
Rein’s music is born of globalization and métissage. Deeply opened to any contamination, they move without intermission between musical universes that are poles apart, in order never to close themselves in a defined genre. Thundersrucked by the model of Mano Negra, they reinterpret it with their instruments, so the sounds of Italian and sSavonic popular tradition espouse upbeat rhythms, that blend in turn with English rock and punk. Further characterizing on the whole is the preciousness of Gianluca Bernardo’s lyrics, owed to the big influence of Fabrizio De Andrè and of the american folk, Bob Dylan above all.
"Occidente", Rein's second work, is a 20-tracks double disc with many guests, contents and innovative politics.
Rein, active since 1999, are one of most active Italian bands. They have always tried to experiment a new way of making music. Proudly independent from any label, they have at their backs more than 400 concerts across Italy. They took part to dozen of festivals, in 2007 they won Laratro Folk Festa, the most important Italian folk-rock music award. In 2008 they are selected between the 12 absolute finalists for the "Primo Maggio tutto l'anno" contest and in 2009 they won "Italia Wave Love Festival", sharing stage with artists such as Ska-P, Bandabardò and Tonino Carotone, and took part to "Play Art Festival 2009"
Rein music is daughter of the globalization, it's made of images and sounds picked up while travelling across the "planetary bazar". Rock, Punk, Jazz, meet Balcan influences and Irish melodies, British sounds join songwriters' tradition and melt with electronic music, and with basic reggae & dub features too. It's a sound devoted to unfaithful idea of patchanka, term coined from Manu Chao's Mano Negra in the latest 80s.
They put forward an opened artistic production model, based on sharing. This way has brought them to count on the support of a large audience, on the collaboration with many other artists, and on the support of independent radio and media. Moreover, even if they have renounced to production and distribution, Rein sell thousand of copies with the Fair Trade policy. They have built an alternative model: a "Fair Trade Music" model.
Rein release their works under Creative Commons licenses, and think that so-called "piracy" should be rethinked as an extraordinary promotion medium; they have resigned their membership from SIAE (Authors and Editors Italian Society) to put forward their policy, and now they have made avalaible for free and legal download their music from european site JAMENDO, with which they're working. They're influenced and they influence the movement of Free Culture, playing an active role on the politic debate on this topic. They are founding members of Free Hardware Foundation and of FPML.
