Michael and The Wolfhounds "Folk Up Your Ass!"

The German Celtic punk scene is being renewed in the last years and several young bands are bringing a breath of fresh air. The likes of The O’Reillys and The Paddyhats, Kilkenny Knights, Drunken Saints and Michael and The Wolfhounds are amazing bands that are focused on their own material.
Michael and The Wolfhounds (formerly Wolfhounds) released an interesting 5 track EP last year. Now, they have gone forward and have released a 7 tracks mini-album/EP based on self-penned songs: ”Folk Up Your Ass!”
“Folk Up Your Ass!” begins with an intro titled “Far Over Part I”. Some of the band’s elements can be noticed on that number: accordion à la Across the Border and epic vocals à la Dave King.
The next track is titled “Dear Mum”. IMHO it was probably the best number on their previous EP and the new accordion and electric guitar arrangements have given a new lease of life to this badass song. Michael vocals have a hard-rock twist. In fact, at the band’s website it’s stated that Michael sang previously with a metal band. The lyrics to this amazing song were written by Bobby Sands and can be read here.
More metal influences can be heard on “Folk Up Your Ass”, an Iron Maiden meet Fiddler’s Green song: “… the music is loud and you want more of this…”
“Beer Beer Beer” is the other song that has survived from their previous EP. Michael and The Wolfhounds move to the pub rock territory with this number.
“Friends for Life” is another standout. Banjo, harmonica and accordion shine on this track.
If track no. 5 was great, “Irish Girls”, a number showcasing accordion and woah backing vocals, is awesome too.
The album is over with an outro based on vocals and piano called “Far Over Part II”
“Folk Up Your Ass!” comes in a 4 panel digipack. The cover artwork is a great logo by Michael Böhm (I love it. One could think that it’s a logo for a basketball team). No lyrics to the songs are provided, but there is all sort of information about the studio and songs credits. The EP has been produced by the band and engineered and mixed by Peter Rixner at Tonstudio Rixner.
Remember the name of this band, Michael and The Wolfhounds. Taking into account the band’s evolution and the quality of this EP, their debut album will be a must have.
