REVIEW - Mr IRISH BASTARD - "The World, The Flesh and The Devil" (2015)

Mr. Irish Bastard "The World, the Flesh and the Devil" Reedo Records
Release date: 8 May 2015
Running time: 52:07 13 tracks, 59:39 13 tracks + 2 bonus tracks

Mr Irish Bastard, the legendary band from Germany, is releasing their brand new album on May 8th, that is, just one day before Europe Day. And it’s clear than the six piece band from Munster is at the forefront of the European Celtic punk scene.

The World, The Flesh and the Devil” kicks off with “Kingdom of the Sun”. After listening to the first notes, I feel that I have put another CD on the player. Greenland Whale Fishers? No, immediately the vocals and sound become familiar. Yes, they are Mr. Irish Bastard, the chorus is addictive as usual and there is enough place for the electric guitar.

The following track is one of the best numbers on this CD: “Drink Another Day”. It’s a catchy song featuring fiddle, tin whistle, banjo, electric guitar and mandolin. The chorus? Perfect: “When Irish eyes are smiling / and Irish souls are fighting / With a raised glass and a raised fist / I’ll fight my way out of this / And we’ll live to drink another day”. First anthem to add to the new collection.

On “Ballad of a Workshy Man”, the boys and the girl take a different approach, a sort of an angrier SIR REG.

Monsters in the Light” is a song with Brit-pop influences à la Madness and infectious chorus. It’s followed by another highlight, “I Hope They Sell Beer in Hell”. Second anthem to sing along at the pub.

Don’t You Walk Away” is a cross between The Men They Couldn’t Hang and Pretenders. Interesting song.

The third anthem is “Fuck You My Darling”. It has the same banjo sound that can be heard on “I Hope They Sell Beer in Hell” and this time Mr Irish Bastard visits the polka territory.

Black Island Ferry” is a 100% Mr. Irish Bastard classic sound and “Captain o Captain” moves again to the pop end with amazing chorus.

Three anthems are not enough, here comes the anthem number four: “That Bitch Drank My Whiskey”. Mr. Irish Bastard at its best: lively, catchy …

All the Time In the World” begins with a female choir and has a Levellers from the late 90’s influence.

Evil Ways” is the last of the kick-ass anthems on “The World, The Flesh and The Devil”. Probably it’s my fave song together with track two.

The standard version of the album ends up with “Grey Grey Grass”, an epic number.

Regarding the bonus tracks, “Black Dog” is really a well-written song and every single instrument has its place to shine, including fiddle and accordion. “Come Out Fighting” is a more intimate number.

The World, The Flesh and The Devil” has been produced by Jörg Umbreit and has been recorded by the band’s classic line-up (Mr. Irish Bastard on guitar and vocals, Lady Lily on tin whistle, Gran E. Smith on banjo and mandolin, Boeuf Strongenuff on bass and Ivo K’Nivo on drums) together with the so-called “Travelling Bastards” Itchy Quetchy on accordion and P and Moe Leicester on electric guitars and fiddler Fingers O’Toole. The album is available on mp3, vinyl, CD and limited CD de luxe edition (have a look to the pic).

The European Celtic punk scene is growing and new bands from Germany,  Hungary, Italy, Belgium or France are offering something fresh and attractive. However, the not-so-young bands like Mr Irish Bastard are still alive and kicking. They are back with a vengeance. The pubs are open, so grab a pint of stout and enjoy Mr Irish Bastard new Top Ten album.
