REVIEW - PADDY'S FUNERAL "Celtic Voodoo" (2013)

Paddy's Funeral "Celtic Voodoo" Self released
Release date: 16 March 2013
Running time: 27:52, 8 tracks

The German band Paddy’s Funeral has had various ups and downs, but finally they have been able to release their second album, “Celtic Voodoo”. The current line-up is Jan (lead vocals, electric guitar, bouzouki, mandolin and tin whistle), Grischa (electric  and acoustic guitars and mandolin) and Levent (drums and percussion). As the band has no permanent bassist, their mate Sebastian plays bass on the album.

The eight tracks on the album can be divided into three groups: Celtic covers, original Celtic rock songs and hard-rock/metal influenced songs.

The three standards run from track 2 to track 4. “Black is the Colour” is a well-known song on Christy Moore’s repertoire. Paddy’s Funeral have rearranged the song with different parts, quieter moments with flute or mandolin and more rocking moments with electric guitar.  “Join the British Army” is  an upbeat cover, a real catchy number. “Polka” is the usual set of polkas “Dennis Murphy’s/John Ryan’s”. IMHO, it's one of the album highlights. The lads have forgotten about the traditional music instruments and have focused on electric guitar. The final result is amazing.

Jan has written the lyrics to the next songs, “No Regrets” and “Quit My Job”. Both numbers have the band’s own Celtic stamp on them: folked up punk’n’roll. Jan plays tin whistle and guest  Dr. Wolf plays fiddle on “No Regrets”.

Finally, there are two numbers that can be put together with the opening track “Sleaze” (do you really need some info about this song?): Danzig’s “Mother” and “Celtic Voodoo Lady”, a Swedish retro-rock infused song following the liner notes.

My Faves?  “Polka”, “Quit My Job” and “Black is the Colour”.

It’s not easy to file Paddy’s Funeral under a label. Anyway, the guys from Göttingen have been able to keep faithful to their own ideas. If you are looking for a  DKM or Flogging Molly sound, this is not your band. But if you are an open minded (Celtic) rock fan, you should check out these guys and you’ll enjoy some of their songs.
