REVIEW - BRICK TOP BLAGGERS "Plastic Paddy" (2013)

Brick Top Blaggers "Plastic Paddy" Blagthis
Release date: 9 March 2013
Running time: 3 tracks, 9:55

Good news! Brick Top Blaggers, one of the best bands of 2011, is back with a kick-ass EP. Three fantastic compositions and no cover. Yes, if you were thinking that they were covering The Peelers, you are wrong: “Plastic Paddy” is a self-penned song.

Why should you buy this EP? First of all, only two of the songs will be featured on the next album. In other words, one of the tracks (“Fisherman’s Tale”) will soon become a rarity. Secondly, BTB sound and attitude are sharper and harder than ever. All the songs are really outstanding numbers. “Plastic Paddy” would be more South Chicago school than the other songs.  “Witness to My Own  Wake” would be Los Angeles school and finally “Fisherman’s Tale” would be a sort of a bridge between the Boston school and the English school.

Brick Top Blaggers sound really tight: great vocals (particularly on the first song), top-notch accordion by Matt Maulding and excellent guitar work on the first two tracks, always backed by solid band mates on fiddle, banjo and rhythm section.

The “Plastic Paddy” EP is a leap forward on the band’s career. Don’t think twice. Go ahead and buy the digipack CD with the artwork inspired by "The
Rising of the Moon.
