REVIEW - WILD COLONIAL BHOYS "Heads or Tails" (2011)

Wild Colonial Bhoys "Heads or Tails" Steel Creek Records SCR-37189
Release date: August 2011
Running Time: CD1 49:49, 11 tracks; CD2 27:57, 6 tracks

Wild Colonial BhoysHeads or Tails” reached no. 9 at Paddyrock’s Best of 2011 list. I got this album for review in January and I have needed more hearings than usual to appreciate it. So I could say that it’s an acquired taste.

The band evolved from an acoustic duo to a full band (electric and acoustic guitars, fiddle, bass, drums and, sometimes, mandolin) and this 2 CD album covers both ends: “Heads” is an 11 track CD (full band) and “Tails” is a 6 track covers CD (acoustic duo). Wild Colonial Bhoys are not your standard Celtic rock band and they are no easy to file. I have tried and I feel that maybe they are somewhere between The Indulgers and The Bollox.

The tracks to check out would be “Friday Night” (an excellent song), “I am Ireland Part II”, “No Place I’d Rather Be”, “Hoping for a Better Day” and the great instrumental “One Night in Seehan’s”. Regarding the second CD, I would pick up their renditions of U2Sunday Bloody Sunday” and The Wolfe TonesRock on Rockall”.

If I had to think again my Top Ten 2011 list, I wouldn’t change it. However, this doesn’t mean that Wild Colonial Bhoys are not worth hearing. They're different, but interesting.
