Circle J "Diggers" Self-released CJ03 (2012)

We were waiting for a new Circle J release in 2012, since their second album “Weekend Warriors” was released two years ago. This time they have decided to record a new EP, “Diggers”. Five tracks that will make happy to their growing fanbase.
I must admit that I love most of the tracks, but I get a strange feeling, like missing something. When I think of Circle J, the following things come to my mind: a crazy singer, fast-paced songs and an amazing banjo sound. Does “Diggers” feature those elements? Sure. For instance, the last number “Sunday Mornings”, on which the Circle J stamp is as good as ever. Or the opening track, “The Legend of Robert Morgan”, another great song with tin whistle instead of pipes (even if I feel that this song should have been played a little bit faster). And our Dutch folk punk heroes have also recorded a great rendition of “La Ronde des Milloraines" (just listen to that top-notch flute on this tune!!!!)
What about the other tracks? “Like the Weather” is a ballad featuring pipes with a more “country” sound. Not my fave, but it’s OK. And “Diggers”, a good Great Big Sea infused song with a sort of a tribute to The Pogues (the chorus is similar to a song included on their debut album and the instrumental part after the second chorus is also influenced by their third album).
So, why am I still wondering that something is missing? It could be something irrational. Perhaps the fact that the EP is too short and I wanted more. Maybe because their previous albums were fucking good, I was expecting their masterpiece and then I’m not able to evaluate the EP objectively. Or the fact that they have moved to a different studio, Mailmen instead of SDA, and have chosen a new co-producer, Martin Groeneveld instead of Theo Vogelaars (maybe my brain have detected a slight change of sound). Who knows? Anyway, one thing is sure: the EP is worth buying, there are awesome songs, enough passion and a wonderful packaging.
I must be a Circle J addict and the dose was too short …
