REVIEW - CELTIBEERIAN "Tirikantam" (2011)

CELTIBEERIAN "Tirikantam" (2011)
Release date: December 2011
Running time: 29:31, 10 tracks

Celtibeerian is a five piece band hailing from Ciudad Real, Spain: Julián (guitars), David (pipes, flutes and backing vocals), Patricia (violin), Gus (Bass and Lead vocals) and Vity (drums).  “Tirikantam”, their debut album, is a tight CD with a lot of interesting songs.  After having watched the CD cover, you will be aware that I’m talking about a folk metal band. If you like bands such as Eluveitie or Korpiklaani, keep on reading. And, if you have never paid attention to those bands, you should keep on reading too. I am not a metal fan, so you should believe me when I say that “Tirikantam” is a very enjoyable album.

These guys have forgotten about other well-known bands playing Celtic metal and are offering their own blend of Pagan Folk, medieval music and traditional music from the French Brittany and Galicia.

My favourite tracks are the instrumental “Tirikantam” (a song led by the flute featuring some “aturuxos”, a special shout from Galicia), “Sacred Wine” (an excellent medieval song featuring flute and violin), “The Great Feast” (catchy song) and “Riding Home” (a fast paced song featuring great flute arrangements).

But there are plenty of good songs. Do you like metal? Then pick up “The Path”. Do you like ballads? Then check “Warrior’s Song”. Are you looking for great folk music from Brittany? “An Dro” is your track. BTW, I recall the excellent French folk rock band Faubourg de Boignard  when I listen to the pipes on this tune. Finally, did you enjoy the Galician traditional tracks on the Bastards on Parade debut album? Go ahead and listen a different approach, metal-muiñeiras.
Just in case you are not sure about the quality of the album, you should know that the tracks were recorded and mixed at DZG during last Summer and mastered at Finnvox by Mika Jussila in September 2011.
