REVIEW - THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND -"Oveground Tales" CFB003 (2011)

THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND -"Oveground Tales" CFB003 (2011)
Release date: 11 June 2011
Running Time: 43:18, 8 tracks

The Crooked Fiddle Band is an excellent name for a band, isn’t it? Three boys and a girl coming from Australia. Yes, from Australia, even if their music blends a lot of European folk influences , mainly from Scandinavia and Central Europe. I don’t know if they have been living in Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Rumania or in Berlin (Germany). But, if they have not lived there, it seems that they have been listening to the likes of Fanfare Ciorcalia, Taraf de Haidouks, The Transylvanians  , Hedningarna, Gjallarhorn and Apocalyptica.

No brass section. No accordion. Just violin, nyckelharpa, guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, double bass, charango, drum kit and tapan (a large double-headed drum). Great fiddling, top-notch rhythm section, ethereal female vocals and male guttural shouts. It’s obvious that the Crooked Fiddle Band know what they want and they do it perfectly. Furthermore the album has been recorded in Chicago and engineered by Steve Albini. So you should be thinking about picking up one copy of this interesting album. And you should buy it: musically is something stunning.

Some numbers to check out: “Countess Bathory’s Finishing School for Girls" (Romanian folk goes metal), “All These Pitchforks Make Me Nervous” (fast paced fiddling from Central Europe blended with some Austrian jazz and funk), “The Mountain Hag’s Advice” (Hedningarna becoming a hard rock band) and “Over the Hill and Under the Hill” (Folk from Sweden/Finland at the beginning, some Blowzabella at the middle and then more Scandinavian music and hard rock)

The album can be purchased from both CD baby and bandcamp. If I were you, I would get  a hard copy from CD baby. Otherwise you would be missing the great artwork and packaging.

The Crooked Fiddle Band. Folk rock? Gypsy punk? World music? All of them and more: great MUSIC.
