REVIEW - CELTIBEERIAN "Tirikantam" (2011)

CELTIBEERIAN "Tirikantam" (2011)
Release date: December 2011
Running time: 29:31, 10 tracks

Celtibeerian is a five piece band hailing from Ciudad Real, Spain: Julián (guitars), David (pipes, flutes and backing vocals), Patricia (violin), Gus (Bass and Lead vocals) and Vity (drums).  “Tirikantam”, their debut album, is a tight CD with a lot of interesting songs.  After having watched the CD cover, you will be aware that I’m talking about a folk metal band. If you like bands such as Eluveitie or Korpiklaani, keep on reading. And, if you have never paid attention to those bands, you should keep on reading too. I am not a metal fan, so you should believe me when I say that “Tirikantam” is a very enjoyable album.

These guys have forgotten about other well-known bands playing Celtic metal and are offering their own blend of Pagan Folk, medieval music and traditional music from the French Brittany and Galicia.

My favourite tracks are the instrumental “Tirikantam” (a song led by the flute featuring some “aturuxos”, a special shout from Galicia), “Sacred Wine” (an excellent medieval song featuring flute and violin), “The Great Feast” (catchy song) and “Riding Home” (a fast paced song featuring great flute arrangements).

But there are plenty of good songs. Do you like metal? Then pick up “The Path”. Do you like ballads? Then check “Warrior’s Song”. Are you looking for great folk music from Brittany? “An Dro” is your track. BTW, I recall the excellent French folk rock band Faubourg de Boignard  when I listen to the pipes on this tune. Finally, did you enjoy the Galician traditional tracks on the Bastards on Parade debut album? Go ahead and listen a different approach, metal-muiñeiras.
Just in case you are not sure about the quality of the album, you should know that the tracks were recorded and mixed at DZG during last Summer and mastered at Finnvox by Mika Jussila in September 2011.

Tracklist:

01 - Tirikantam
02 - The Path
03 - Praise to the Vineyards
04 - Sacred Wine
05 - The Great Feast
06 - An Dro
07 - Warrior's Sorrow
08 - Full Moon

LEXINGTON FIELD - NEWS FEBRUARY 2012

MARCH MADNESS HAS ARRIVED!

It is here! The biggest month in the history of Lexington Field! We can't wait to celebrate with all our fans, family and friends as we release an album, play some HUGE shows, and kickoff the next phase of our band! Here is a breakdown of the next four weeks:

WEEK ONE - HOTEL KOALAFORNIA

It all starts here, when our good friends from Melbourne, Australia, The Ramshackle Army, make a pit stop in California on there way to tour with Dropkick Murphys! Also, our buddies, Hoist the Colors, will be joining us, as well as LA Celtic rockers, Green Ashes, and our mates, The Fooks, who bring the Irish Punk to the pubs of San Diego year round!

SHOW #1 - Friday, March 2 - The Slidebar (Fullerton, CA)

SHOW #2 - Saturday, March 3 - Gallagher's (Ocean Beach, CA)

These will be two very special, "international" shows, so make sure to take advantage of this opportunity to party with The Ramshackle Army, and let's show them what the Celtic Punk scene is all about in California!

WEEK TWO - HE COMMANDS A SHIP WITH NO NAME

Not only will we be playing a couple shows (Friday, March 9 we return to Clancy's in Long Beach with Dublin Public & a Lexington Field Lite performance at Hard Rock Cafe on Saturday, March 10), we will return to our acting roots to film our next music video with our talented friends Trevor and Miles, who were the creative force behind our "Tracy Boys Fight the World" video! The plot is set, the storyboards are being created, and we will start filming the music video to "Sir Captain Jones" off our upcoming EP Poor Troubled Life on Saturday, March 10. The final product should be out in early April so stay tuned...it's gonna be a good one!

WEEK THREE - ST. PATRICK'S DAY & POOR TROUBLED LIFE ARE HERE!!!

This has to be the biggest week ever for Lexington Field. It starts Tuesday, March 13, with the official release of our new EP Poor Troubled Life on New Folk Records! We have been anxiously waiting to show the world our new album, and we are super excited to be working with New Folk Records to make that happen. On top of that, our debut full length, Old Dirt Road will also be released nationally on New Folk Records that same day. Then on Wednesday, March 14, we head up to Hermosa Beach to play with Irish Rock heavyweights, Young Dubliners, at the very cool Saint Rocke. Last year we had the pleasure to play with the Young Dubs five times, so we can't wait to share the stage with them again. It will also be our first show where our new EP will be available, and a nice midweek tune up to St. Patrick's Day! On Friday morning, March 16, we will be back in San Diego to join Sprung Monkey and Tony Cummins at Hooley's in La Mesa for Keggs N' Eggs presented by Rock 105.3! We go on at 8:30 AM and make sure to tune in before that to hear us on the radio! Okay, that would normally be a pretty jam packed week, but then the biggest day of the year is on Saturday, March 17...ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!! Dust off your shillelaghs, because this is gonna be an insane day. First, we will be playing a matinee show downtown at Henry's Pub. This is the third year in a row we have played the afternoon there, and we are never disappointed to start the drinking early at Henry's Pub. After the show, we pack up and walk one block to the largest St. Patrick's Day party in all of San Diego...shamROCK!!! Our friends the Young Dubliners, will be headlining the night at 10 PM and guess what...we go on right before them from 8:30 to 9:30 PM!!! Also playing shamROCK this year will be The Fooks, The Fenians, and The Downs Family. It will be our biggest show yet, and we want you all to come celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Lexington Field downtown!

WEEK FOUR - CD RELEASE PARTY TIME YOU SELFISH BASTARDS

We cap off this amazing run with our CD Release Show to celebrate our new album Poor Troubled Life!!! The party is gonna be held Saturday, March 24 at The Ruby Room. We invited Hoist the Colors to come down and play our CD Release Show because it just wouldn't be the same without them. Also on the bill will be a couple San Diego local bands Black Market III and Dick Justice & The Happy Smoke. The whole process of making this album and getting it to all of our fans was quite an undertaking that started way back in the summer of 2011, and we want to thank all of you by putting on the best show ever! This is just the beginning to what looks like an unbelievable 2012. March Madness is here! 1-2-3...FIGHT!

REVIEW - THE TARTAN HEARTS "Flag's at Half Mast" (2008)

THE TARTAN HEARTS "Flag's at Half Mast"
Release date: 2008
Running time: 35:40, 12 tracks

Sometimes I find a top-notch band and I get a special feeling. For instance, the first time I saw The Real McKenzies live during their “Loch’d & Loaded” tour. I try to experience the same feeling once again, but I have to keep on waiting. I think that I felt something similar the first time I listened to the Tartan Hearts songs.

The Tartan Hearts, raucous? Sure. Rowdy? Yeah. Rough at the edges? Of course, so what? That’s exactly what I love: an honest band that plays music with passion. If the world is gonna end tomorrow, I would like to see The Tartan Hearts on stage before that happens.

The band hailing from Calgary (Canada) released a kick ass debut album back in 2008. Unfortunately, they kept a low profile and the band broke-up a year later. I wouldn’t say that The Tartan Hearts were an underrated band. A band is underrated when the fans know their music, but they are unable to notice that it’s worth hearing. On the contrary, I would say that The Tartan Hearts were the best kept secret in the Celtic punk world.

Flag’s at Half Mast” is a twelve track CD in which eleven tracks are self-penned songs and only one is a traditional tune (the opening track “Masons Apron”). Even if Aaron Taylor (bagpipes and tin whistle) had played live with the previous incarnation of the band, No Coast Hardcore, both bands are different. The Scottish traditional music has a bigger weight on The Tartan Hearts sound, a  blend of bagpipes, street punk and oi!

IMHO, there is no clunker on this album. Great  anthems and sing-alongs like “Broken Bottle, Broken Strings”,  “Petty Crime and Five Buck Wine”, “United Voice”, “Fire the Pipes”,  “Piper’s Salute” and “Ken” that will make you jump and shout.  Vocalist Peter MacLeod’s wife is called Amy Leigh, but she is not the girl on the song “Amy Leigh. Anyway, another great track.  “Land Ho” is an excellent shanty, I could row a boat while listening to that song.  And the last track “Sailor’s Grave” with a guest playing banjo (John Clark) is the best choice to close the album.

I remember that a friend told me some years ago that The Real McKenzies were “a second tier band”. I realized that normally I prefer that kind of bands. Therefore, in my own world,  the term “second tier band” is not an offence, but a compliment. I feel that if Mike McColgan   was forced to choose today between Dropkick Murphys and the Tartan Hearts, he would prefer the Canadian band. So, if you like “second tier” bagpipe punk bands like The Real McKenzies, The Tradesmen or Pipes and Pints, you should contact Peter McLeod to buy your copy.

REVIEW - DRINK HUNTERS "With My Crew" Discos Rayados DR.014 (2011)

DRINK HUNTERS “With My Crew” Discos Rayados DR.014
Release date: December 2011
Running time: 34:40, 13 tracks

The long awaited debut album by the Catalonian band Drink Hunters is here: “With My Crew”. The band is running fast and nobody can stop them: a top-notch 4 track demo released in 2009, one song on the Tribute to the Mahones album in 2011, a 13 track album at the end of 2011 and a track on the upcoming compilation Paddyrock Vol. IV.

The Real McKenzies sans bagpipes” (a term coined by Chris Toler) are offering a great album: all of the tracks have been written by the band. If you were waiting for some standards or the odd Californian punk cover, you were wrong. The influences keep on being Bad Religion and NOFX, but Drink Hunters’ own material is so strong that they don’t need to cover other bands.

Lyrics deal with booze, critics to the consumer society, the police, crime …. Sometimes they are a little bit hedonistic, but there is also a lot of fun. For instance “She was 56”, a song about a young man falling in love with a MILF.

Apart from that number, the highest moments on the CD are the well known 4 songs from their demo (“It’s in Your Hands”, “Drinking Song”, “In My Head” and “Warrior Souls” and brilliant new numbers like “Fucking Cops”, “All Night Drunk” and “Molly Never Sleeps Alone”.

Fiddle and accordion arrangements are excellent. I feel that the quality of the band is very, very high and they deserve to be produced by a top international producer. If they are able to work with a foreign producer and to improve their lyrics, their worldwide fan base will increase at a high rate.

Given that no other band in the world is playing such intense Californian punk with a Celtic twist, I won’t be surprised if the band gets a deal with a label from the other side of the ocean and the album is licensed there.

In the meanwhile, e-mail the band and grab your copy of “With My Crew
