2018-01-30 ALBUM REVIEW - THE DREADNOUGHTS "Foreign Skies" (2017)

The Dreadnoughts "Foreing Skies"
Release date: November 10, 2017
Running time: 43:04, 12 tracks

After a long hiatus, The Dreadnoughts came back in 2017 with their most ambitious album to date. “Foreign Skies” is a concept album about the First World War. At the rear of the digipack there is no standard track listing, but three acts: Act I, tracks from 1 to 5, Act II, tracks from 6 to 8 and Act III, tracks from 9 to 12.

My fave numbers belong to Act I, which is also the longest one. “Up High” is an excellent song with a British folk rock twist. “Foreign Skies” is The Dreadnoughts at its best: Ramones echoes at the beginning, fast paced accordion, woahs’s on the backing vocals, circus music, Eastern Europe sounds … and even a dash of Queen. “Daughters of the Sun” is a song about the sufraggettes. Fiddle and accordion punk with hey shouts and more gypsy touches. The next track is the polka on the album, “Amiens Polka”, while “The Bay of Suvla” is badass anti-war song. I love that a cappella shanty. However, there is a mistake on the liner notes: Ewan MacColl didn’t write “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda”. Scottish Australian folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle wrote that song, together with other brilliant anti-war numbers such as “The Green Fields of France (No Man’s Land)” and “All the Fine Young Men”.

Act II is probably the most “punk” of the three, with cuts like “Anna Maria” and “Jericho”. “Black and White” gets a classic Dreadnoughts treatment and it’s one of the highlights on the album.

The last act kicks off with “Gavrilo”, an upbeat Balkan song featuring horns. It’s followed by the quieter song on “Foreign Skies”: “A Broken World”, a piano number where guest Zoey Exley recites the words. The album is over with a couple of standout songs: “Black Letters” and “Back Home in Bristol”. The former gets a folkier treatment, while the later showcases The Dreadnoughts cider-punk.

Foreign Skies” was released last November 10, but a second album called “Foreign Skies.B-Sides” was issued last January 10. That digital only album includes "4 songs that weren't good enough to make "Foreign Skies"! But, ya know, they're still pretty good".

Don't forget to watch "Stoked
"a film Adam PW Smith finished a little while ago that shows The Dreadnoughts in all their glory. It features photos and footage from the past ten years (and some great stories), as well as a bit about the new record." (You'll find the video below)

"Jump & Drink" (single, 2015)
"Amazing Grace" (single, 2017)

Recorded, Mixed & Mastered at Summit Sound Studios, Westport ON
Engineer: Dave Daw
November 2015

"Jump & Drink" written by Chris Giguere 1995

Patty O'MacKinski-Sven is a loveable composite character
He's proud of his own heritage though he was born in Canada
He's 1/8th Scots, two bits Swede, 7/16ths Bolivian
He's one third Dutch, 2/10th French
And the rest is Native American

Every day he goes to work in the same old dingey sweat shop dump
The boss man don't say anything except to jump when I say JUMP
No one seems to notice that something really stinks
He just cannot get over how much he needs to drink

At the local watering hole, he's sitting at the bar
He's listening to the music amazed that he's come so far
Tender sidles over and says without a wink
Man you cannot hang out here unless you buy a drink

Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink
Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink
Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink...

Patty knows if he takes a drink he won't stay in his seat
Knows he won't have time to think, dancing to the changeless beat
Tender sidles over and says without a wink
Man you cannot hang out here unless you buy a drink

Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink
Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink
Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink...

Jump Drink Jump
Drink, Jump, Drink

Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink
Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink, Jump and Drink
Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink, Jump, Drink...

Jump and Drink

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
We have already come
‘Tis grace has brought us safe thus far
And grace will lead us home

When we’ve been here 10,000 years
Bright shining in the sun
When we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind but now I see

Was blind but now I see
Was blind but now I see, I
Was blind but now I see

2018-01-25 ALBUM REVIEW - THE MOORINGS "Unbowed" (2017)

The Moorings "Unbowed" MP10617
Release date: May 15, 2017
Running time: 12 tracks

The Moorings first studio album and their sophomore live acoustically CD showed that the band from Alsace was able to write top-notch songs. But The Moorings got their degree with their “Nicky’s Detox” EP, a 5 track CD where all the songs were composed by the songwriting team Nicky Sickboy/D.Phil Jelly.

Three years have gone by and The Moorings have finally released a studio album based on self-penned stuff. “Unbowed” follows the same path of The Moorings’ previous EP, as there are songs in French and songs in English.

I appreciate when a band includes some sets of tunes on their albums. And there is a set of tunes on “Unbowed”. Moreover, “The Dancy Cargo Hold’s Dance/Mermaid’s Jig” is not a traditional number: new fiddler Anne has written the first tune together with front man D.Phil Jelly, while the second tune was written by former fiddler Sophie-Anne. Hats-off!

Three songs in French have made the album. “Amsterdam” is a kick-ass rendition of the Jacques Brel’s classic song. “Les Bras Piqués” is another badass number featuring Luca Crespi (Uncle Bard and The Dirty Bastards) on tin whistle. Maybe the lyrics would be OK 15 years ago, but I feel that fortunately nowadays discrimination against tattooed people is very low. “Mutins” is an amazing pirate song featuring Sweeney Lauder on tin whistle.

Brandy Belle” is a weird number, as it’s sung both in French and in English. Not my cup of tea.

As far as the songs in English are concerned, a couple of them were previously released on “La Cigale Unplugged”. “The Mariner I used to be” is based on the tin whistle (Sweeney Lauder again) and the banjo, and it’s probably the most pogues-ish number on “Unbowed”. “Posy of Lily” has also been re-arranged with an epic end.

Three tracks showcase The Moorings drinking side. Videos were shot for the anthems “Drink up Fast” and Ice Cold Jar of Whiskey”. I hope that a video will be shot for the opening track “Another Drinking Wound” too. This fantastic song that reminds me of The Clash is my fave track on the album, btw.

Apart from those cuts, there are two songs that show a different side of the band: “Captain Watson’s Song” and “Invictus”. Former fiddler Anne-Sophie and D.Phil Jelly have put music to the poem by William Ernest Henley and Celkilt bagpiper Loïc MacWind guests on tin whistle .

Unbowed” is housed in a 6 panel digipack that comes with an 8 page booklet. The album is also available on vinyl.

Track listing:

01. Another Drinking Wound 03:43
02. Captain Watson's Gang 03:37
03. Amsterdam 03:15
04. The Dancy Cargo Hold's Dance / Mermaid's Jig 03:15
05. The Mariner I Used To Be 03:48
06. Les Bras Piqués 03:23
07. Drink Up Fast 03:38
08. Brandy Belle 03:14
09. Posy Of Lily 04:00

Spirit of Canada - Home for a Rest

(Source: Wikipedia) "Home for a Rest" is a song by Canadian folk rock band Spirit of the West, from their 1990 album Save This House. Although never officially released as a single, it is the band's signature song and is considered a classic of Canadian music.

Background and writing

Written by John Mann and Geoffrey Kelly, the song tells of a drinking spree in London. The lyrics and the musical setting clearly revel in the fun of the experience, but also show a longing for the rest and comfort of home:

“ You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a week, I've been drunk since I left
These so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest. ”

The song was written during one of the band's first tours of England, and was originally more of a poem than a full-fledged song. According to producer Danny Greenspoon, the band considered it still a work in progress, and had not brought it to the primary recording sessions for the album; rather, it was brought to Greenspoon's attention only as he was about to conclude work on the project and return home to Toronto. Recognizing the song's potential, he immediately worked with the band to resolve their uncertainties about its readiness, and finally recorded it as the last song of the sessions.

British geographical references such as Euston Station, Charing Cross Road and Yorkshire appear in the lyrics. The later choruses switch the length of time that the narrator has been gone from a week to a month, and in some live performances change from a month to a year. The song's musical arrangement incorporates the traditional reels "Castle Kelly", "Glass of Beer" and "Swallow's Tail".

Live performances

"Home for a Rest" was always the final song played at the band's concert performances, excepting encores. A live performance of the song at the band's 2015 Massey Hall concert forms the climax of the 2016 documentary film Spirit Unforgettable; due to Mann's battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, he struggles with the lyrics at first but the entire audience begins singing along.

Popularity

The song was one of two Canadian songs (the other being "Do the Bearcat" by David Wilcox) to appear on the 1998 compilation album Frosh, alongside such party anthems as Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life", The Village People's "YMCA", Denis Leary's "Asshole" and Beastie Boys' "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)".

In 1999, the song was named to CFNY's Top 1002 New Rock Songs of All Time, ranking 689th behind R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People" and ahead of Robert Palmer's "Looking for Clues". In 2007, CFNY named it No. 8 on their Top 102 Canadian New Rock Songs of All Time.

In 2005, "Home for a Rest" was named the 22nd greatest Canadian song of all time in a listener vote on the CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version.

The song is also frequently covered by other Canadian folk rock bands, including Mudmen and Enter the Haggis. Spirit of the West's original recording has also occasionally been misattributed to Great Big Sea on YouTube and in online lyrics databases. At a November 2017 fundraising benefit concert for Mann's medical care at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, the participants recorded a tribute version of the song onsite prior to the concert; participants included Jim Cuddy, Sarah McLachlan, Ed Robertson, Barney Bentall, Colin James, Shari Ulrich and Jim Byrnes.

2018-01-13 VIDEOS - PIPES AND PINTS, TIR NA NOG, LOS WHISTLES

These are the latest videos that have been added to our YouTube channel. Remember to subscribe to our YouTube channel. Then you'll be able to watch all the new videos before they are posted here.

"On 11 January at 11:11 the band Pipes and Pints have introduced their second single in the new line-up called “Rebel in My Veins.” For the music video they have joined their forces with a pop-art artist Josef Rataj - Rataj Art, hoping to kick some butts. The message is that every artist’s got rebel blood in their veins, with the untamed desire to create and to shift the boundaries. The band compares the hiatus and the feelings around it to a cage and they are going to break that cage with the first shows in April in Prague and Brno.

Josef Rataj is a pop-art painter and artist, whose co-operation with Pipes and Pints is no coincidence. Upon returning from the United States, Josef received his first exhibition offer. He seized the chance and made the entire exhibition, 10 big canvas paintings, overnight with the only companion in his studio that night - a Pipes and Pints CD stuck in his stereo. And the works from that exhibition are the ones that kickstarted his career.

Pipes and Pints have met Rataj completely by accident in November 2017, in an attic studio of the alternative venue Drive House at the release party of their second last music video "Raise Our Flag". The video was being screened, guitars were played and Josef would paint in his attic studio as it all was taking place. “We've only exchanged a few words that night, the story spoke for itself. It was clear that we had to do something together,” says Vojta Kalina, the band’s bagpiper.

What can I imagine in my mind it has happened. My positive thinking has changed my life into what I always wanted to do. These happenings sometimes do not have sense but everything goes to given goal. The heart is compass. When we come together it was like a synchronization, ” says Josef Rataj.

Art is an energy, a mixture of colours, sounds, and feelings, and we want to pass it all on in this music video. Josef also has this energy around himself when he paints, not unlike the one that we have while playing, it’s omnipresent,” says Vojta. “And without anyone even realising it, Travis’s lyrics are about tattoos, painting on human bodies and the memories that we carry.” "Rebel in My Veins" is the first song that the band has composed after the hiatus. Energy and the joy of creating is overflowing in this song.

The cage, about to unleash the boys into a new concert era, is going to break at the first shows in Brno and Prague. “We wanted something special to mark the occasion. I have always wanted to play Sono Centre in Brno ever since the venue opened with a magical concert of several Dire Straits members. And Pragovka in Prague is the venue we picked for its magical industrial atmosphere, to which our live wildness will fit perfectly. Even this video was shot in one of its halls, it all clicks together amazingly,” adds Vojta on the location selection.
