2017-02-27 ALBUM REVIEW - THE TOSSERS "Smash the Windows" (2017)

The Tossers "Smash the Windows" Victory Records
Release date: March 3, 2017
Running time: 54 17 tracks

The Tossers released 5 studio CDs, 1 retrospective album, 2 live albums (one digital and another one on CD) and several EPs between 2000 and 2008. However, their albums have become scarce in the last 9 years. There was a gap of 5 years between “On a Fine Spring Evening” (2008) and “The Emerald City” (2013) and the gap between that album and the new one, “Smash the Windows” (2017) has been 4 years.

The Tossers were formed in Chicago in 1993, so next year they’ll celebrate their 25th anniversary. Their line-up has been more or less stable, as four members are there since 2001 (Bones, Mike Pawula and the Duggins brothers) and “Smash the Windows” has been recorded by the same personnel that recorded “The Emerald City”, with the exception of fiddler Rebecca. As The Tossers have not become a revolving door of musicians, their musical approach and sound have not changed too much. And that’s something their fans appreciate.

Then, “Smash the Windows” have all the things that you can expect from a Tossers album: some instrumentals, some standards, some fast-paced anthems, some self-penned ballads and some “different” songs. But, above all, their love to their hometown imbues every single track on the album. As usual, Andy Gerber has produced The Tossers’ latest work at Million Yen Studio in Chicago and guests include Sean Gavin on uilleann pipes and Marta Cook on harp.

The first instrumental on “Smash the Windows” is called “Humors of Chicago”. This whiskey-soaked tune will make you jump and dance like a devil. If “Humors of Chicago” showcases The Tossers Celtic punk side, the other instrumental is the definitive proof that not only are The Tossers the bastard sons of The Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners, but also the bastard sons of The Chieftains. Yes, “Lots of Drops of Brandy” is a set of tunes infused by The Chieftains that kepts the Tossers stamp. In other words, the perfect blend of trad material and punk stuff.

There are three standards on the new album. The first one is “Danny Boy”. Tony sings backed by Emily’s fiddle and little by little the full band join in. Uileann pipes are played at the end of the song.

The second traditional ballad is “Mairi’s Wedding”. It begins quietly too, with vocals and tin whistle and then the band speed up. Great rendition to sing along.

The Foggy Dew” is the last standard and it’s the song that closes the album. A lot of bands have covered this song in the last years, but The Tossers deliver a different rendition with a strong percussion.

Regarding the anthems, The Tossers’ spirit is alive and kicking on numbers such as “The Horses” (Watch out! Very addictive), “Fare You Well” (fast-paced and short song), “Whiskey” (another number for next St. Patricks Day), the opening number “Erin Go Bragh”, the single “Smash the Windows” (video HERE) and “Drinking Al the Day” (that’s how The Tossers understand The Dubliners' Legacy).

Not really “quiet” tracks, but maybe the tempo goes a little bit down on “I Will Court Them All” (amazing number thanks to the mandolin, fiddle and tin whistle, apart from the set of tunes that includes The DublinersChief O’Neill’s Favourite”), “The Town Where I Was Born” (another tribute to Chicago), the epic “1969” with its “God Bless Ireland” chorus,  “A Ghra Mo Chroí” and the softer song “My Love”.

This time there’s no complex number like “Wherever You Go”, but track no. 7, “Resurrection Mary” is a darker number with a western feel.

Smash the Windows” will please The Tossers diehard fan base, but also the new generation of Celtic punk fans that were too young 15 years ago. I wish I could see The Tossers on stage in Europe, as I feel that they are the greatest Celtic punk active band on earth.

2017-02-25 PADDY ROCK PODCAST - EPISODE #30 - Best of Celtic Punk 2016

(This podcast was originally posted at PaddyRock  last February 14. Enjoy!

Glad to see you all have stuck around, 2016 left me feeling like someone beat me with a lead pipe and telephone book and then January and ensuing bullshit was just the icing on the cake, and I don’t want to hear  a single goddamn thing about Politics Left or Right – We are here for the music! So I was undecided how to approach the Best of 2016 from a Podcast perspective this year. They are always lengthy and I don’t suspect most people listen to anything over to hours, in fact going forward we might try more frequent 1 hour shows. So today I took some of the best tunes from the Best Celtic Punk releases from 2016 , wrapped them up in a nice 1:45 minute package for you to enjoy.  It was such a great year for music, and 2017 is on course to be even better!  So turn this one up loud, its is a real barn burner!  I know you are going to enjoy it. And as mention in the Podcast the first Paddy Rock Presents show of 2017 is going down March 11, Featuring Craic & The Lucky Pistols is Happening at The Works Tavern in Bangor, PA. Click HERE for a link to the Facebook event.

As always thanks for listening ~ Phil (aka The Grinning Beggar)

2017-02-22 ALBUM REVIEW AND FREE DOWNLOAD - O'HAMSTERS "Gde by my ni byvali" (2017)

O'Hamsters "Gde by my ni byvali"
Release date: February 21, 2017
Running time: 39:45, 14 Tracks

Plenty of new releases at the end of February-beginning of March. One of them is the brand new album by Kyiv’s finest band O’Hamsters. The Ukranian six-piece band has been delivering top-notch albums and EPs since 2010. So, their third album “Gde by my ny byvaly” is not an exception.

Istinnyy Irlandets (A True Irishman)” opens the album. This song was recently advanced by the band: kick-ass accordion, electric guitar and Anton’s rasp vocals.

The next number is titled “Winter Hill” and has a bluegrass intro, gang vocals and mandolin. Amazing song.

Madlen (Madeleine)” is track no. 3. A lively intro with a Flogging Molly twist, but O’Hamsters add the electric guitar and the growls to move away to their own accordion driven territory.

The following cut “Sluchay v Speze”  has a piano intro, but this is not a jazz club: the song bursts into a Celtic hardcore number. Accordion, whistle and electric guitar shift to a folkier end and then a little bit of ska is delivered before throwing more vocal energy by Anton and the gang.

Great mandolin and accordion intro for track no. 5, “Ugar”. Fast-paced Celtic-punk at its best.

Will You Come to the Bower”, a The Dubliners standard, gets the O‘Hamsters treatment on the title track “Gde by my ni byvali”. Amazing guitar work towards the end of the song

Khrani, Bozhe, ostrov Erin” features Vera Brenner on bagpipes. This song is in fact a Celtic punk rendition of “God Save Ireland”.

Track no. 8 is called “Batal'on Svyatogo Patrika (St. Patrick’s Battalion)”. O’Hamsters are able to deliver poignant songs too. Harmonica, electric guitar, mandolin and organ are showcased on this interesting song.

Strannyy soyuz (Strange Alliance)” is another standard, this time “The Rising of the Moon”. Apart from the accordion, the tin whistle and Anton’s vocals, O’Hamsters add some guitar work.

Cath Sulchuait” begins with tin whistle and percussion, but soon evolves into a Celtic punk number with some metal touches, gang vocals and a mandolin driven end.

High voltage too on track no. 11 “Ryzhiy Ayrish Boy (Auburn Irish)”. Even if there’s a short ska passage, the guitar leads the accordion and the tin whistle.

After all that energy, O’Hamsters calm down a little bit on the dancing tune “YA iz Konnakhta (I'm from Connaught)”. Fiddle is played by guest Anna Vasil’chenko from Ukranian band Kings & Beggars.

The album has come to its end, but O’Hamsters have thrown a couple of numbers as bonus tracks: the fast-paced anthem “Stakan (Glass)”, whose video was released at the end of 2015, and their cover of “The Sickbed of Cuchulainn” that was originally released on the Tribute to The Pogues album last year.

O’HamstersGde by my ny byvaly” would be probably a top10 album at the end of the year. O’Hamsters’ passion, musicianship and arrangements make them an essential band. Yes, they don’t sing in English. So what? IMHO, they are one of the hottest bands in the European scene.

Track listing:

02. Winter Hill 03:20

2017-02-19 FREE DOWNLOAD - NYAH FEARTIES "Granpa' Craw" (1995)

Scottish folk-punk legends Nyah Fearties were featured on Celtic Folk Punk and More back in 2009. Now their last album "Granpa' Craw" is available on Bandcamp.

"Released in 1995, Granpa' Craw was the final Nyah Fearties album. More professional and produced than their previous efforts, the Fearties' confrontational lo-fi noise and experimentation had given way to a (marginally) more traditional approach.

Two versions of the album were released: the original "European bootleg" (given this title by the band themselves, following a dispute with their management) and the subsequent self-released "full" version featuring the bonus tracks included here.

Credits:
released April 4, 1995

Davy Wiseman: Vocals, guitar, bass, whistling
Stephen Wiseman: Drums, percussion, banjo, bouzuki, backing vocals
Michael Woods: Fiddle, accordion, penny whistle
Allan Henry: Additional bass

Produced by Bobby Luccini at First Floor Studio, Brussels
"Safe as Houses" produced by Neal Cairns in Ali's House, Kilbirnie
"Campbelton Loch" recorded live in Hannover, Feb. 25th 1995

Illustration and design by Allan Henry
Jockie Wilson painting by Tam McGibbon (cover of original pressing only)

2017-02-15 EP REVIEW - THE BLACK WATCH "First Shot" (2017)

The Black Watch "First Shot"
Release date: January 11, 2017
Running time: 20:15, 8 tracks

At Celtic Folk Punk and More headquarters we’re always looking for new bands. Recently we’ve come across a new bagpipes punk band from Moscow, The Black Watch. They have just released a mini-album titled “First Shot”. This six piece is fronted by  Kristian Pogifist (vocals, guitar) and Vitaly Pogodin (pipes), and they borrow the name from an infantry battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

An “Intro” (“The Gael”) opens the mini-album and then The Black Watch deliver a couple of oi! infused bagpipes punk kick-ass numbers: “Weekend” and “Drink Scotch”. Oi! Oi! shouts, gang vocals and electric guitars led by the pipes.

The Black Watch calm down a little bit on the next track, “On Stranger Tides”, a song with a Ramones twist featuring bagpipes and flute.

On “Boarding”, The Black Watch come back to their Russian bagpipes driven oi! The next song is another standout number, “Home”.

Outro” is a shorter version of “The Gael”, but it’s not the last track on the mini-album. The song closing “First Shot” is titled “Bitch”. It has a rockabilly feel and features boy and girl vocals and addictive woah chorus. No pipes on this cut.

Zuname and Middle Class Bastards are not alone in the Russian bagpipes punk scene. There’s a new band in “town”: The Black Watch

Track listing:

1 - Intro 00:57
2 - Weekend 2:22
3 - Drink Scotch 3:26
4 - On Stranger Tides 3:56
5 - Boarding 3:27
6 - Home 2:23
7 - Bitch 3.12

2017-02-12 ALBUM REVIEW - THE PEELERS "Palace of the Fiend" (2017)

The Peelers "Palace of the Fiend"
Release date: January 3, 2017
Running time: 52:40, 13 tracks

For all of you that belong to the Shite’n’Onions generation, The Peelers are a living legend. The boys from Glengarry County (ON, Canada) delivered a kick-ass mini-album in 2002, “Boots & Suits”, and then a proper debut album in 2004, “Liquordale”. The album was chosen album of 2004 by Shite’n’Onions and fans will remember songs like “I’ll Meet You at the Bottom of a Bottle”, “Plastic Paddy” and “Savannah”. However, after the release of this must have album, The Peelers went on hiatus. The band moved to Montreal and played the odd show there, while rumours of an upcoming album were spreading. They covered “Rise Again” on the “Whiskey Devils – A Tribute to The Mahones” album in 2010. But no The Peelers album arrived in the following years. Fortunately, the band begun to record their new album in October 2013 and the recordings were finished in October 2015. The new album was announced last year on Facebook and finally “Palace of the Fiend” has been released at the beginning of January 2017.

A gap of 12 years and a half between their previous album and the new one is too much time. Would Dave Barton and his band mates be able to meet their fans expectations? I daresay that “Liquordale” is a must have album and “Palace of the Fiend” is an essential album too. I’ve been listening to The Peelers previous works. Producer Pierre Pineault did a great work on “Liquordale”. He has recorded, edited, co-arranged, mixed and mastered “Palace of the Fiend” and the final result is even better!!! Let alone the line-up. Old band members Dave Barton (lead vocals, guitars),  Eric Diamond (tin whistle), Christos “Zeus” Smirnios (drums), Tim Duggan Walsh (guitars, bass, banjo, mandolin) and Ewen McIntosh (mandolins, ex-The Crofters, ex-The Glengarry Boys, Hadrian’s Wall) and new members Jonathan Moorman (fiddle,  ex-Bodh’aktan, guest on several The Mahones albums) and Christopher Monaghan Stewart (mandolin, drums)
have been joined by Sean “Riot” Ryan (electric guitar, Irish Nails, The Mahones) and guests Johnny Fay (drums, The Tragically Hip, producer of The Mahones third album), Micheal O’Grady (accordion, but tin whistler on The Mahones), Neil Emberg (backing vocals), Finny McConnell (vocals on “Going Down  Swingin’ ", The Mahones), Lorraine Muller (vocals on “Beggars, Rats and Boozers”) and a horn sextet.

Palace of the Fiendstarts off with “New York”, a kick-ass Canadian Celtic-punk anthem that proofs that The Peelers are alive and kicking.

Bastard of the Bunch” is the next number. The song was advanced on Soundcloud and it was enjoyed straightaway by fans missing The Peelers previous stuff.

Track no. 3 is titled “The Black-Eye Blonde”. Great traditional sounding intro based on fiddle, tin whistle and accordion. “Julia Delaney’s” is played at the end of the song.

The following cut is “Going Down Swingin’”, a Flogging Molly infused song featuring Finny McConnell. You can watch the video for this amazing song HERE.

The Dark Path” has inherited the same DNA of the “Liquordale” songs, while “Five Roses” is an awesome number with a Johnny Cash twist featuring organ. References to The Clash can be heard on that song: ““Breakin’ rocks in the hot sun” / While singin’ about a White Riot”.

Beggars, Rats & Boozers” is a song sung by Dave and Lorraine Muller, who also guested on the band’s rendition of “The Fields on Athenry” from the “Boots & Suits” mini-album.

If the quality of the CD was top-notch so far, 6 brilliant songs are played in a row before the album finishes up. “A1 A FLA” is an upbeat number that any Celtic punk fan will love. Track no. 9, “Farewell to Clean and Sober” is stuck to “A1 A FLA” and it’s the catchiest song on “Palace of the Fiend”: “In the morning  the mornin’ see you in the mornin’ / Meet you up the boreen wher the cold north winds blow / In the morning  the mornin’ see you in the mornin’ / We ask for part and whiskey but they still say no”. Once again, references to The Clash can be heard: “Joe is on the jukebox / ‘See it gets to Jimmy Jazz”.

The beginning of “I’m off to Kill the Devil” reminds me of Goats Don’t Shave second album. Although I thought that it was an instrumental number, it’s a badass song.

Stand down Cleary” features an audio excerpt from Boxing Championship Jack Dempsey vs Jess Willard from July 4, 1919. The song is about an Irish stand out boxer from Co. Tipperary. Needless to say that The Peelers give Flogging Molly a run for their money.

Company of the Saints” is a true gem: fab song featuring a horn section that will make you think of Shane MacGowan’s best moments.

The album is over with an excellent version of the traditional song “Cunnla” (sic). “Cúnla” was the first cut on Planxty’s second album “The Well below the Valley” (1973) and The Dubliners recorded their rendition featuring Stockton’s Wing on their “25 Years – Celebration” double album in 1987. Hats-off guys! Great choice and better rendition.

Regarding the packaging, The PeelersPalace of the Fiend” comes in an eight panel digipack including all the lyrics to the songs, studio credits and thank you section.

2017 is going to be an epic year. The heavyweights of the genre are back with their new albums. Will they be able to meet the fans’ expectations? The Peelers have already done it. If you love real Celtic punk, grab your copy of this album.

2017-02-06 EP REVIEW AND FREE DOWNLOAD - THE CRAZY ROGUES "Rebel's Shanties" (2017)

The Crazy Rogues "Rebel's Shanties"
Release date: February 1, 2017
Running time: 24:15, 6 tracks

The Crazy Rogues have just released a 6 track mini-album titled “Rebel’s Shanties”. The band from Veszprém (Hungary) had previously released a 2 track demo and a 4 track EP both in 2015. A better quality of sound can be noticed on “Rebel’ Shanties”, but the band’s approach to Celtic music is the same: punk rock, ska and country.

My favourite track is “Fleet”, a catchy song featuring banjo, flute and fiddle that reminds me of their fellow countrymen The Jolly Jackers. “Mutineers (must die)” is another highlight: fast-paced celtic punk with electric guitars, banjo and gang vocals. Other number that stand outs would be “Rebellion”, a fiddle driven song with a LochNesz twist.

The other songs on the mini-album are the opening track “And Then the Sky Fell” (more stuff with a Hungarian Celtic punk DNA), “Silver Hair” (Americana goes ska) and “The Sad Leprechaun” (IMHO too slow).

Rebel’s Shanties” is a step forward on The Crazy Rogues career. Once again, The Crazy Rogues are offering this recording on a Name Your Price basis on Bandcamp. Go there, download the mini-album and leave some money to the guys.

Tracklisting

1. And Then the Sky Fell 03:44

3. The Sad Leprechaun 04:08
4. Mutineers (must DIE) 02:18

2017-02-04 ALBUM REVIEW - MUDMEN "Old Plaid Shirt" (2016)

Mudmen "Old Plaid Shirt" Mudpiper Records
Release date: December 9, 2016
Running time: 42:41, 11 tracks

The Mudmen were founded in 1998 by piper brothers Sandy and Robby Campbell in 1998. In almost 20 years the band from Ontario (Canada) have released 9 studio albums. The band have had different line-ups, from 6 to 5 members and the current incarnation is Sandy and Robby Campbell on bagpipes, Mike Meacher on lead vocals, mandolin and banjo, Dan Westenenk on bass and Jeremy Burton on drums.

Apart from a Celtic standards based album released in 2012, “Donegal Danny”, The Mudmen discography has neither a live album, nor a best of compilation. Obviously the band’s approach has evolved from the earlier hard-rock sound with a punk twist to the mature sound of “Old Plaid Shirt”. No worries, the top-notch pipes are always there.

My personal favorites are tracks 1, 3, 4 and 6. “Been Somewhere” kicks off with bagpipes and drums and banjo behind them. “Old Plaid Shirt” is the title track, but also an infectious pipes led number to sing along and dance.  “… in an old plaid shirt they’ll bury me”. Class! Acoustic guitar can be heard at the beginning of “This Old World”; then the beat speeds up and the brilliant pipes join. “Whiskey Princess” is a rocking number, probably the catchiest track on the album together with “Old Plaid Shirt”. Other numbers that will please the fans would be “Here’s to You”, “On a Tractor”, “My Best Friend” and the rousing "Captain of Men".

On a Plaid Shirt” is a Canadian to the bone album where musicianship and quality songwriting meet. Just give the album some spins and you’ll appreciate The Mudmen’s universe: “blue collar guys from small towns.” Enjoy!

Tracklisting:

01 - Been Somewhere 3:36
02 - Here’s To You 4:23
03 - Old Plaid Shirt 4:22
04 - This is Old World 4:30
05 - The Storm 4:54
