REVIEW - FLANNERY "Happy Days" (2015)

At the beginning of February 2013 I got an e-mail from a Dutch band that had shot a video for a kick-ass song. The band was Flannery and the song was titled "The Epic Beer Song". Two years have gone by and the guys from the Lowlands have finally released a fine album full of Highlands infused bagpipes rock songs.

Several CDs coming from The Netherlands have been reviewed in 2015. "Happy Days", Flannery's debut album, follows a different path, since their sound is not rooted on the Flogging Molly (or Dropkick Murphys) sound, but on the likes of Wolfstone or Prydein. 

Fans enjoying piping hot numbers will love the band's instrumentals "Brossie" and "Standfast". Apart from those tracks, there are quite a few amazing songs: the catchy "Flannery" with a great fiddle intro, "Happy Days" with the gang vocals and the pipes solo, "Whiskey Games", a song based on the "Hot Asphalt" tune featuring fiddle and guitars and the Ramones-que sing along "Uh Oh Goodbye".

"The Real Musicians" is another interesting number, featuring a well-known pipes theme, and "Divided" is a Celtic reggae track. Even if Flannery are more Scottish than Irish, they deliver their own rendition of "I'll Tell Me Ma". And the album includes their hit "Beer Epic Song" as a bonus track too.

"Happy Days" packaging is a four panel digipack stating the band's line-up, studio credits, thank-yous and band pics. The lyrics to the songs have not been included.

The Dutch Celtic punk/rock scene has broken through in 2015. There are a lot of bands to pick up and all of them have been able to release enjoyable albums. Flannery "Happy Days" is an awesome CD and the proof that Benelux bagpipes punk/rock bands are worth hearing.

Formed in early 2007, Reading-based Folk-Punk outfit Smokey Bastard started with the intention of being the UK’s answer to the likes of Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. Mick O'Toole formed in 2012 In the deepest darkest Shire, Wiltshire in a town called Calne. This town would be the breeding ground to where they honed their style of chaotic English Punk with their ancestral Celtic and English Folk to create their style of British Folk Punk. Mick O’Toole was a character in a song from local legends The Boys Of County Hell a band who they get most of their inspiration from. However they are also inspired by the likes of the Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Gogol Bordello and The Pogues not to mention many other great punk bands such as The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Adverts and Rancid. This is how they get their sound by combining the great punk ethos with traditional Folk. They now have two EP’s ‘Deep In Cider’ and ‘1665 Pitchfork Rebellion’ and while performing over hundreds of gigs they realised that they only have one goal to keep making music that hopefully brings people together for a good ole knees up and a grand old sing along. No egos, no divas just working class men having a good time.

REVIEW - THE MUDDY STATES "Urban Legends" (2015)

The Lucky Trolls (thank you guys) passed our details to The Muddy States and they contacted us. They sent their "Urban Legends" EP and we have really enjoyed it. So, we have decided that The Muddy States, from the Liège province in Belgium, are our Band of August 2015.

The Muddy States were born in November 2013 from the ashes of a band playing Irish sessions. Johnny (guitar), Mary (fiddle) and Davey (bass) were the original members but it was not until May 2014 when Simon (drums) joined that they were really a full band.

In March 2015 they released their first EP "Urban Legends" five self-penned songs showcasing their love for country, Celtic, americana, blues and soul music.

The EP kicks off with "When I Was in Jail", an amazing number in The Wages of Sin vein.

The next number is called "Dead Corpse Lying". It goes slowly, but from time to time they speed up the tempo.

Track number three is a r'n'r number titled "Cocaine" where the rhythm section shines.

"Muddy State" is a briliant pop number with some Celtic influences. It has a pizzicato intro and vocals are shared by boy and girl. When one thinks that the song is over at 1:54, the music comes again. 

Finally, "A Drinking Song" is pub music at its best, a Dexy's Midnight Runners sounding number.

"Urban legends" has been produced by Georges Noisy Pride. The EP comes in a gatefold sleeve. The pictures have been taken from Lou & Tofke and the design has been made by Lolo.

Fans loving pub music and the likes of Johnny Cash and Steve Earle, grab a copy of this fantastic EP.
