Malox, a duo from Tel Aviv, has recently released their second album. The first one is available at Bandcamp for free.
"Malox's music derives from around the world with various local interpretations; direct and aggressive, befitting to both musicians who operate on the stitch of old-new, premeditated -improvised and beautiful - ugly.
Debut album titled "One Day" combines Punk style presentation with the challenging melodies, rhythms and styles, the album provides fascinating twists and creating new bounced-troubles ome sounds.
The second album, "Polka for Punks", features 10 tracks with more of a club-punk attitude. In this version of Malox the music expends to outer space and deals with larger verity of original tunes scented with eclectic folk. This time you can even participate in a "Human-klingon" wedding celebration.
Talmudi redefines saxophone playing. His instrument is as loud and cracked as a distorted guitar, hectic and wild like a predator, and sometimes melodic and romantic like a "Gondolier".

VIDEO - THE LEVELLERS "MUTINY"
Levellers have just released the latest instalment of their project to record a video for every track from their recently released album, "Static On The Airwaves".
"Mutiny" tells the story of the 1917 Étaples Mutiny by British troops in France during the First World War, and in particular that of its executed 'leader' Corporal Jesse Robert Short. The video was produced by Rich Mulryne and Emma Birchett
Levellers are currently on a major UK tour throughout November 2012. They are inviting fans with tickets to any of the gigs who sing or play an electric instrument (not guitar) to apply to take part in the finale performance of 'The Recruiting Sergeant'.

"Medicine Man" - from a Coptic translation of the Qoheleth.
"Boneyard" – Gullah song collected in the Georgia Sea Islands. Used to teach children proper diction. Notable West African call and response and Fula hoddu –banjo-like lute.
"Black Rain" – origin unknown. Discovered on an unlabeled cylinder recording within the Smithsonian restricted archives.
"Carousel" – sourced from a Carpathian Romani wedding anthem known as “Janissary Hora.” Based on an Ottoman fanfare popular amongst dervishes and death squads.
"White Hair" – diverse versions collected in Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Northeast Kingdom work camps. Derived from the Hebridean melody, “I Long for Thy Virginitie.”

REVIEW - THE MAHONES "Angels & Devils" SECOND OPINION

Well what can one say, old Spider Mahone was lucky enough to be sent a copy of The Mahones new release "Angels and Devils" to have a wee listen to, and after a long night at work listening to the latest offering from Canada's finest, decided to put pen to paper.
After the excellent album "The Black Irish" released in 2011, I really did not think that Finny and Co could get any better, but I have to say I was wrong, from the opening bars of "Shakespeare Road" to the closing bars of "Tin Soldiers" this album grabs you by the throat and leads you on a musical journey thru events that have shaped this bands history.
From songs about living in London drinking whisky in squats to nights out in Hamburg on a rare night off from touring, ( Something that I have had the honour and fun of sharing in ) this album is about life and the joys of it,
One thing I particulary like about the album is the use of fiddle on certain tracks, the highlight for me being "Whiskey Train" which has a real Levellers feel to it and am sure is going to be a crowd pleaser for many a year to come as it is up there with such classics as "Paint the Town Red", "Drunken Lazy Bastard" and "Queen of Tequila".
This album has something to please everyone, the cover of "Tin Soldiers" I have to admit sounds better than the original in my humble opinion, while "Medley in E Minor" had me wishing I was at a gig hearing it live and leaping about with a large Jamesons in my hand. The track "Angel Without Wings / Merry Christmas Baby" is a modern day "Fairytale of New York" and highlights Finny's unique style of song writing to the full.
All that is left for me to say is best grab yourself a copy of this excellent release as it is a must have for all Paddy Punk rock fans and I for one can't wait to hear these new songs played live.

Well what can one say, old Spider Mahone was lucky enough to be sent a copy of The Mahones new release "Angels and Devils" to have a wee listen to, and after a long night at work listening to the latest offering from Canada's finest, decided to put pen to paper.
After the excellent album "The Black Irish" released in 2011, I really did not think that Finny and Co could get any better, but I have to say I was wrong, from the opening bars of "Shakespeare Road" to the closing bars of "Tin Soldiers" this album grabs you by the throat and leads you on a musical journey thru events that have shaped this bands history.
From songs about living in London drinking whisky in squats to nights out in Hamburg on a rare night off from touring, ( Something that I have had the honour and fun of sharing in ) this album is about life and the joys of it,
One thing I particulary like about the album is the use of fiddle on certain tracks, the highlight for me being "Whiskey Train" which has a real Levellers feel to it and am sure is going to be a crowd pleaser for many a year to come as it is up there with such classics as "Paint the Town Red", "Drunken Lazy Bastard" and "Queen of Tequila".
This album has something to please everyone, the cover of "Tin Soldiers" I have to admit sounds better than the original in my humble opinion, while "Medley in E Minor" had me wishing I was at a gig hearing it live and leaping about with a large Jamesons in my hand. The track "Angel Without Wings / Merry Christmas Baby" is a modern day "Fairytale of New York" and highlights Finny's unique style of song writing to the full.
All that is left for me to say is best grab yourself a copy of this excellent release as it is a must have for all Paddy Punk rock fans and I for one can't wait to hear these new songs played live.

Hoist the Colors, the seven-piece Irish- and Americana-influenced punk band from El Segundo has just released their second album, “Miles to Go Before We Sleep”. Their previous effort, “Second City”, was no. 6 at Paddyrock’s best of 2011 list and it reached no. 11 at the list that was voted by our fans. But a lot of changes have occurred between their debut album and the sophomore release.
First of all, several line-up changes. Josh Linden (vocals & mandolin), Ryan Sharp (banjo) and Iván de la Torre (drums) are still in the band, and Sina Etesami has shifted from electric guitar to acoustic guitar. The new musicians are Camilo Barahona (fiddle), Fabián De la Torre (bass) and Jeff Murphy (electric guitar).
Secondly, all the lyrics on “Second City” were written by Josh Linden. However, three tracks on “Miles to Go Before We Sleep” have been written by Jeff Murphy: “Atwood”, “Signs & Symbols” and "California".
Finally, the band has signed with Hardline Entertainment (the debut album was a self-released disc) and it has been produced by Ken Seaton and mixed by Darian Rundall. Yes, the same guy that produced Pipes and Pints “Found & Lost”.
So, after this long introduction, let’s talk about the album. The The Men They Couldn’t Hang meets NOFX band has recorded a top-notch album. No duets this time, but a bunch of honest songs full of So Cal punk and country influences together with a great Celtic punk instrumentation. “Second City” was an excellent album, but sometimes one felt that some of the songs needed something, maybe a tin whistle or an accordion. This is not the case, because the fiddle and the electric guitar get a more important role on their second album.
Once again, there are no covers. I really appreciate the bands that trust in their own songwriting and normally this pays. The running time is 51 minutes, longer than usual. Anyway, this really works, since I find that only 3 songs don’t “meet my requirements”. In other words, 11 out of 14 numbers are great.
Regarding the band’s iconography, that is, the artwork, Hoist the Colors keep on using “traditional” XIX century Californian themes. A black and white pic of a train running. Besides, two of the songs mention the word train, “Gordie Lavoie” and “Sign and Symbols”. The 8 page booklet contains all the lyrics, credits and thank yous.
OK, the best songs: “Silence & Loss”, with great vocal harmonies and a wonderful chorus: “Let’s take the world tonight/Don’t you know it’s gonna be alright”; “Shackless & Chains”, another catchy song with some gang vocals à la Dropkick Murphys; “California”, probably the most “punk” song on the album, and “Gold”, a number on which a different kind of fiddling can be heard. Yes, I know that I have said that 11 songs are great. Now it’s your turn, buy the album and discover all the amazing songs on this CD.
The eternal question: which is better, “Ramones” or “Leave Home”. I’m not sure but I know that “Miles Before We Go To Sleep” is better than “Second City”. Given that Hoist the Colors are a prolific band, I feel that their third album will be their master piece. In fact, a lot of people say that “Rocket to Russia” is better than “Ramones” and “Leave Home”, don’t they?

"Mexican Son Jarocho mixed in with Irish Jigs and Reels and a good dose of Country and Bluegrass. It has healthy servings of Ska, Soca and African Highlife and we've been known to throw in a little White Boy Reggae. Of course it also has strains of Soul, Pop and Funk although we are by no means a funk band. It is mostly Acoustic although we also like Electric guitars. It is Singer-Songwriter basedbut not the coffee house variety. It is definitely FOLK music, but not in the Kumbaya style. It has a deep respect and appreciation for tradition (Bluegrass, Old Time, Celtic, Son) but it's by no means Traditional. It Rocks incredibly hard and is extremely danceable, but that is not to say it can't be mellow and slow and beautiful. It can be heart breaking, but also joyous. It is never dark or angst ridden, and always full of hope - but not in the 'Up With People' kind of way. It's not Jazz, although we like Jazz a lot. It's not heavy metal or punk or grunge, although we love Rush and AC/DC. It is World Roots Music. It's POP music. It is GOOD music. It has a tendency to connect people and means a lot to many folks the world over, and for that we are very grateful. It is the only multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-lingual, multi-instrumental, genre bending, co-ed band you will hear today!!"

REVIEW - PIPES AND PINTS "Found and Lost" (2012)

At last! This album was at the top of my wish list and finally it has been released. I have been following Pipes and Pipes before starting this e-zine. Besides, their first recordings were the second free downloads at Celtic Folk Punk and More and their debut album was the first CD to be reviewed here. Therefore, I was eager to hear “Found & Lost”.
Their tour schedule has been as busy as The Real McKenzies' and fans all over Europe have enjoyed their incendiary shows. Everybody was waiting for their sophomore album in 2012, but it has been released now, at the end of 2012. That is, three years later than “Until We Die”. Was it worth the wait? Yes, of course.
Pipes and Pints have evolved in the right direction. They were aware that they have to go forward and then they hired producer Darian Rundall (Pennywise, US Bombs) to help them. As a result, “Found & Lost” is a strong release with a superb sound. The vocals are more powerful, the bass lines are clearer in the right moments and the background vocals are more important (Hey Ho on “One Connection”, NaNaNaNa on “Run Away”, Uoooooh on “Her Life”, “Blackhearted Doubts” and “Warpath 82” …). Perhaps the pipes should be a little bit louder on some tracks, but, as a whole, the sound is awesome.
But there are other kick-ass things on “Lost & Found”, like those R’n’R from the 50’s parts on tracks like “Never Let You Down” and “Right or Wrong”. The band has been labeled as the European/Czech Dropkick Murphys. So if you look for Dropkick Murphys influences or similarities, stop wasting your time. Maybe the disc opener is a little bit DKM, but if you listen carefully to all the tracks on “Found & Lost” you will find a great deal of Clash and Rancid influences.
My faves: “Never Let you Down” (I guess that the guys were listening to The Clash rendition of “I Fought the Law” when they wrote this number), the disc opener “She’s the One" (No, it’s not a Ramones cover, but the most Celtic number on the album), “Run Away” (the catchiest song), “Found & Lost” (this time they were listening to The Clash “Garageland”) and “Her Life”.

Pipes and Pints have been usually compared to Dropkick Murphys. Moreover, there is a sticker on the album saying “for fans of The Real McKenzies, Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly” . These comparisons are useful for marketing purposes, but they are not really true. Pipes and Pints are closer to Real McKenzies than to Dropkick Murphys both in attitude and sound. In fact both of them are more “Californian” than DKM, but they are following separate musical ways. Pipes and Pints Californian music is different from that of The Real McKenzies and Pipes and Pints are not so Scottish, even if Vojta plays the Highland pipes.Pipes and Pints don’t need comparisons. They have their own identity and they are an essential band on the Celtic/Bagpipes punk scene. They are loved by fans, critics and their colleagues from other bands. Just have a look to the pictures at the bottom, David from Bastards on Parade wearing a Pipes and Pints T-shirt and Aaron from Drink Hunters wearing a Pipes and Pints T-shirt.

Lexington Field will return to the studio this December to record our second full length album!!! We have signed up with the super talented producer/engineer/musician/songwriter, San Diego's very own, Jeff Berkley! You might know him from the awesome San Diego folk rock group Berkley Hart! We will record at his studio here in San Diego called Berkley Sound. He has recorded many amazing musicians around San Diego (Josh Damigo, Gregory Page, Berkley Hart, The Lovebirds, Tim Flannery), and we are truly lucky to use his expertise and ability to really capture our American Fiddle Rock!
Next month, we will announce the title of the album, which really fits the meaning of our new songs that we have been writing and working on all year. Also, our good friend Joepi, who created the incredible artwork for Old Dirt Road & Poor Troubled Life, is on board to do the artwork for the new album - how cool is that! We will keep you updated along the way with news, surprises, and happenings surrounding the whole process. REVIEW - CURLIES "dobry den, tesi me" (2012)

Punk + Bagpipes + Czech origin = Kick-ass band. The Czech Republic is the bagpipes punk goldmine: Pipes and Pints, Pilsner oiquell, Benjaming Band and now Curlies. I know that everybody is looking forward to hearing the new Pipes and Pints album. However, I feel that a special attention should be given to the Czech speaking band Curlies. A lot of Celtic punk fans are already familiar with this band, since three tracks by Curlies were included one of our samplers and the video for “Je mi jedno” was also posted here, so they know what I mean.
Why should you listen to Curlies? Why are they so special?. The band motto is clear: 100% circus punk. In other words: fun, fun and fun. Influences by The Real McKenzies or Pipes and Pints can be heard on some Curlies’ songs. But Curlies are not so Scottish as the former and not so raw punk like the latter. Even if some tracks are bagpipes punk-rock, I would filed Curlies under bagpipes pop punk. Not really the Ramones infused pop punk, but pop punk anyway.
Apart from the 3 songs that everybody should have listened to (“Je mi jedno”, “Jsem napúl” and “Osmý div je z východu”), there are plenty of excellent numbers on this album. For instance “Lidi se nezmĕní”, an amazing Celtic pop-punk song with some Farler’s Fury sound;“Víly” and “Poslední”, two bagpipes punk-rock tracks which are closer to the Pipes and Pints attitude; “Já nejsem romantic”, that can be put together with the French band To The Last Drop material and “Život je takovej”, which is an awesome Californian punk infused track with great chorus.
The album was recorded by Pavel “Rohlík” Brom at his studio Ex Avik and mastered by Přemek Haas at his Studio PyHa, both in Pilzen. All the songs are Curlies’ originals and were recorded by the 4 band members (Marek-Guitar, vocals, Lukás-Drums, vocals, Michal-Pipes, vocals and Marek-Bass) together with Pavel “Rohlík” Brom (guitar, vocals) and Hana Vedralová, who played bass on tracks 2, 7 and 9. Did I mention that the pipes are really “in yer face”, not hidden in the mix? Catchy songs and excellent production. What else do you need to listen to this band?
Some people tend to neglect the bands that don’t sing in English. You shouldn’t do that. I know that fortunately a lot of Celtic punk fans are following other bagpipes punk bands that sing in German (Die DØdelsäcke) or even in Czech (Benjaming Band). Maybe you could join us. A new wave of European bagpipes punk bands have arrived and Curlies and To The Last Drop are at their forefront.

Punk + Bagpipes + Czech origin = Kick-ass band. The Czech Republic is the bagpipes punk goldmine: Pipes and Pints, Pilsner oiquell, Benjaming Band and now Curlies. I know that everybody is looking forward to hearing the new Pipes and Pints album. However, I feel that a special attention should be given to the Czech speaking band Curlies. A lot of Celtic punk fans are already familiar with this band, since three tracks by Curlies were included one of our samplers and the video for “Je mi jedno” was also posted here, so they know what I mean.
Why should you listen to Curlies? Why are they so special?. The band motto is clear: 100% circus punk. In other words: fun, fun and fun. Influences by The Real McKenzies or Pipes and Pints can be heard on some Curlies’ songs. But Curlies are not so Scottish as the former and not so raw punk like the latter. Even if some tracks are bagpipes punk-rock, I would filed Curlies under bagpipes pop punk. Not really the Ramones infused pop punk, but pop punk anyway.
