“The idea to make a festival band was born whilst at Reading '08. We realised that it's not always your favourite band that makes the festival for you. It's the ones that take you away, or leave you with a big smiling grin on your face. Walking into a tent and within minutes you're in the middle throwing beer everywhere. This is Calico Street Riots incentive. We formed just after boxing day 2008. How we managed to get it all together this quickly is testament to our enthusiasm in what we do. That is, to play this music just about anywhere!”

REVIEW: BRUTUS' DAUGHTERS - "When the Pubs Are Dying..." Self Released 2010
The Madrid-based Brutus’ Daughters have the distinction of being one of the very few female-led folk-punk bands in this genre. Lead singer “Paula” has a voice that one could best describe as an angry, bratty sound, very much befitting the punk attitude conveyed here and surprisingly in-tune with the cry of the band’s Asturian pipes, or “gaita.”
Said gaita makes up half of the “folk element” of the Daughters, sharing this title with the fiddle, although “sharing” doesn’t seem like the most appropriate term. The two instruments seem to battle for the lead role as frequently as they do share it. Having two dueling lead lines going at the same time is not unusual on “When the Pubs Are Dying,” (the band’s most recent release.) The two instruments do, however, compliment each other during their little battles, creating a sort of “chaotic harmony,” that is all at once unsettling, unusual, and really interesting.
The 8-track release, “When the Pubs Are Dying,” finds the lyrics crisply snapped out in English and Spanish. Along with the pipes and fiddle, the band consists of drums, rhythm guitar, lead guitar and bass. Also in the mix sees the fiddler doing some double duty on the tin whistle and low whistle.
The general atmosphere of Brutus’ Daughters’ "When The Pubs Are Dying" is one of an abrupt, raucous stomp of a punk rock attack, not remotely softened by its accompanying folk elements. The bands’ inclusion of the Asturian Gaita, and the assortment of languages the songs are delivered in, (not to mention the chorus of ladies’ voices,) not only create Brutus’ Daughters signature sound , but contribute to a genuinely exotic atmosphere as well.
Foreign-sounding; yes, (at least to my ears,) but also, as enjoyable as it is intriguing.

FLATFOOT 56 - Live in Baltimore 2009
(Taken from Wikipedia)
"Flatfoot 56 is an Oi! punk band from Chicago, Illinois. The group's use of Scottish Highland bagpipes has led to their classification as a Celtic punk band, comparable to Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly.
The band formed in summer 2000 as a three-piece punk band. The three original members, who are brothers (Tobin Bawinkel, Justin Bawinkel, and Kyle Bawinkel), started writing songs in Fall 2000. By the Christmas season of the same year, they were playing their first concert. In January 2001, the band added Josh Robieson (bagpipes, guitar, mandolin) to the lineup and the band began including the Highland bagpipes and a second guitar into its sound.
In 2001 they recorded their first demo, then in Summer 2002, the band recorded their first full length album, entitled Rumble of 56. This recording was done in Rockford, Illinois, in a studio called the Noise Chamber. Their second album, Waves of War, was released in 2003. Their song, "That's OK," had heavy radio play on stations across the Midwestern United States. It has been known as one of the higher-rated songs Flatfoot 56 has ever played and is definitely a crowd favorite at live performances.
In 2004, Flatfoot 56 performed at the Cornerstone Festival in Illinois for a crowd of about 700 people. It was at this concert that the band released their first album, Knuckles Up. It has been the band's best-selling record, and the group continues to record and tour. The band has been signed to Flicker Records and has re-released Knuckles Up through the label. Their fourth record, Jungle of the Midwest Sea, was released on May 15, 2007.
While not touring and playing with Flatfoot 56, Kyle Bawinkel sings for the hardcore side project Sexually Frustrated.
In January 2009, the band announced on their website that they are currently recording a new, full-length album.
On December 18, 2009 it was officially announced that Flatfoot 56 had signed to California based Old Shoe Records for the release of their new album "Black Thorn." "Black Thorn" was initially due for release St. Patricks Day (March 17th) 2010, but was delayed until March 30th 2010.
Flatfoot 56 commonly encourages and organizes a variation on a circle pit called the Meat Grinder, which has become immensely popular with fans. They're also known for the "Braveheart," in which the audience splits down the middle and rushes toward each other at the beginning of a song, in imitation of a scene from the movie of the same name. Flatfoot 56 usually ends their sets with the hymn "Amazing Grace." The audience wraps their arms around each other's shoulders and sings along for the first verse before devolving into a massive circle pit for the remainder of the song.
Tobin Bawinkel - lead vocals, guitar
Kyle Bawinkel - bass, vocals
Justin Bawinkel - drums, vocals
Eric McMahon - bagpipes and guitar

THE CEILI FAMILY - Tory Kings
The Ceili Family, a 6-piece, Celtic folk-rock band out of western Germany, lists Christy Moore, The Dubliners and The Pogues pretty highly among their influences, and with their latest release, Tory Kings, it shows.
In the wide spectrum of styles in the Celtic Folk-Punk genre, The Ceili Family’s sound falls fairly squarely in with those of The Pogues’, The Mahones,’ and, to a lesser extent, The Greenland Whalefishers,’ with more of an emphasis on the folk-ish elements and less crunchy guitar distortion.
The bands’ instrumentation includes guitar, mandolin, accordion, bass, drums, and fiddle along with vocals, which were are all in English, despite the bands origins. These vocals ring in somewhere between a slur-free version of Popes-era Shane MacGowan, and The Mahones’ Finny McConnell for a clear and easy to understand lyric delivery.
All of the instrumentation is top-notch and impressive, but it is the accordion that I first noticed on Tory Kings, the band’s follow-up to 2007’s Tooraloo. It plays a major role in defining The Ceili Family sound, straddling between the traditional and the rock instruments, filling in the chords and providing a broad backdrop for the fiddle and mandolin to dance upon.
With Tory Kings, The Ceili Family continues with their “no frills folk ‘n’ roll” with a collection of all-original tracks proudly displaying their influences. The end result being an upbeat and enjoyable release that is easy to listen to, no matter what the mood.

THE DUTCH IRISH BASTARD - "For the Hell of It" project
(Taken from Dutch Irish Bastard's MySpace)
Two years ago on St Patricks Day, The Dutch Irish Bastard came into existence, when Mr Irish Bastard unexpectedly invited him to join them on the Shamrock Clash Tour. He just in time decided not to send "Thanks, no, I am too old and never played in a band before!"-mail, thinking "Why the f*** not have a go at it?".
So after some practicing at home and one rehearsal with the band, he found himself debuting on a tour with Blood or Whiskey and Fiddlers Green, traveling Germany on a nightliner bus packed with booze. The Dutch Irish Bastard took to it like a duck takes to water, so being a 'Traveling Bastard' lasted longer than the Shamrock Clash Tour, playing some 30 gigs before waving the band goodbye.
n the meantime, he had also joined The Mahones on their 2008 European Tour. He then got recruited by Circle J, joined them for a full year of boozing, gigging, songwriting and recording (the Weekend Warriors CD), before the buggars grew tired of your man and kicked him out.
Lately, your man embarked on this “For the Hell of It” project, inviting PaddyPunk bands from around the globe to put his lyrics to music. So far, work is in progress in Germany, Spain, Norway, Japan and Australia. So The Dutch Irish Bastard is much looking forward to what the third year of bastardness has in strore for him.
Basic idea is collaboration in songwriting, and maybe in recording, with various other bastards in the PaddyPunk scene around the globe. Work on one song with this bastard, work on another song with another bastard, and so on, The Dutch Irish Bastard providing the lyrics and perhaps a rough idea for a melody.
Basic philosophy is reciprocity. If so inclined, the bands involved can add a song developed together to their setlists and CDs Simultaneously, The Dutch Irish Bastard assembles a fine line of songs too, in this unusual way bringing together the finest bands in PaddyPunk.
Working title of the project is: "For the Hell of It !!!, PaddyPunk adventures of The Dutch Irish Bastard". Songs will be uploaded on his myspace profile, and, who knows, will maybe one day collected on a CD.
Check The Dutch Irish Bastard's profile (esp. his blogs) for regular updates on the project and for some of the lyrics written
Within a few days after launching this project, Robin (Ceili Family), among the first to join ship, came up with an idea on how the song Another Drink or Two Too might sound (check the first song on the profile). What a fast and cunning bastard, GRAND.
IRXN from Bavaria are working with The Dutch Irish Bastard in putting some words to music in praise of Turlough O'Carolan, the legendary Irish harper. Of course, a melody by him will be the basis of this song: Carolans Welcome (recorded among others by The Chieftains and The Waterboys). But this version is definitely going to be different.
After Ceili Family, Circle J and IRXN, The Dutch Irish Bastard is happy to welcome The Royal Shamrock from Japan on board. They are gonna work on your man's words "At crawling distance”
Currently, work is in progress in Norway, Spain, Japan and Australia. Bands you all know well. Names will be revealed as demo's come in.
Wanna sign up too? Hey ho, let's go !!!

THE POKES - Poking the Fire
(This review was originally published by www.shitenonions.com on September 14th, 2008. Used by kind permission)
Out of the Celtic Folk-Punk hotbed of Berlin, Germany comes The Pokes. And yes, the name was chosen as a tribute to Mr. MacGowan and Company.
Despite this, the band makes it quite clear that they are “not Irish and do not pretend to be.” They make this clear not just through the very frank statements saying just this on their CD liner notes as well as their website and MySpace page, but also through their music; not only omitting any songs about Ireland or any traditional Irish covers on their ‘Poking the Fire’ release, but including 2 tracks sung in German! ‘Poking the Fire’, the band’s 2nd full-length release, is full of rowdy, rambunctious, sing-alongs, that seems to aim as much for creating its own sound as it does to staying true to its Paddy Punk formula. In doing so, something altogether unusual is the outcome, with few words summing up The Pokes as accurately as the word “fun.”
Instrumentally, the CD plays like a showcase for the accordion with banjo ornamentation and the rest of the band providing an elaborate and very percussive backdrop with sharp, angular voicings from the acoustic guitar, bass, and drums.
Lead vocals are abruptly barked out in emphatic, boisterous metronomic syncopation and kept within a limited scale for a result that seems to hide the German accent; noticeable only now and again throughout the disc’s fourteen tracks, (thirteen, plus an unnamed, uncredited, banjo-only tune that starts after sixteen minutes of silence after last song on the disc ends.) This vocal treatment does create a mood that seems somehow foreign to the familiar melodies; contrasting, yet complimenting. Perhaps, an attempt at some sort of hybrid sound between the Celtic influences and the band’s German heritage was the goal here. Whatever the aim, the result is a sound that is pretty singular and recognizable to The Pokes.
The disc opens with a great track called “The Day I Pass Away,” (with an equally cool video available at the band’s MySpace page,) that sets the pace appropriately, and the disc’s velocity barely drops below this bar.
Or, in short, fun.
