2017-01-28 ALBUM REVIEW - THE MAHONES "25 Years of Irish Punk-The Very Best" (2016)

The Mahones "The Very Best - 25 Years of Irish Punk" Whiskey Devils Records WDR-CD5980 /Wolverine Records WRR 222
Release date: Augsut 26, 2016
Running time: 1h14min20sec,21 tracks

After 25 years on the road, The Mahones decided to release a definitive best of album to celebrate their anniversary. The Mahones had previously issued a couple of greatest hits compilations, “The Best of The Mahones” (2003, 17 tracks) and “Irish Punk Collection” (2007, 17 tracks). As four new studio albums have been delivered by The Mahones since 2007, quite a few amazing songs have been added to the band’s repertoire. Therefore, Finny and Katie thought that they should offer to their fans an ultimate collection. Not only would make the new album the songs recorded after “Irish Punk Collection”, but their earlier well-known songs would be given a new lease of life. Then, they re-recorded 16 songs to sound exactly like they are regularly performed live and those songs were put together with some original versions from “The Hunger & The Fight” albums. As there’s an unwritten rule that says that a best of album must include a previously unreleased song, “new” member Scruffy recorded a pipes intro.

So, “The Very Best – 25 Years of Irish Punk” consists of 9 old songs that can be found on the previous best of albums, a new unreleased song (“Scruffy’s Intro”), 1 song from “Live in Italy” (“Wild Rover”), 9 songs from their last 4 albums and a studio version of “Teenage Kicks”. No songs from “The Hellfire Club Sessions” and “Take no Prisoners” can be found on this new album.

The final result kicks ass. All the songs have been given the current Mahones treatment, with a live atmosphere and great tin whistle and/or fiddle arrangements. IMHO, the album is spotless till track 17, “The Hunger & The Fight” included. Regarding the last 4 tracks, I would have chosen other self-penned songs (some interesting numbers from “Angel & Devils” and “The Hunger & The Fight Part I” were unfortunately left behind) instead of the covers. Anyway, I understand that Finny and Katie wanted to showcase the punk edge of the band too.

Remember that The Mahones will be touring Europe from mid-February to mid-March 2017 with The Whiskey of the Damned member Gina Romantini on fiddle and with SIR REG as support on some gigs.

2017-01-25 EP REVIEW - FIRKIN "Into the Night" EP (2017)

Firkin "Into the Night " EP Pump Jump Records
Release Date: January 20, 2017
Running time: 8:56, 3 tracks

When a singer leaves a band, there is always a risk for the remaining members. Fans could make comparisons and decide that although the band keeps the name, they are not the same band. Firkin’s old singer Barna Marthy left the band and PJ and his mates were obliged to look for a new vocalist. When Andy jumped in, Firkin decided to release an EP, “Revox”, with songs from their previous album, but sung by the new singer.

Another two songs where posted on YouTube and obviously fans and critics alike have welcomed Andy, who is doing a great job. And this is clearer on the band’s latest offering, the “Into the Night” EP.

The EP kicks off with the title track “Into the Night”. Celtic punk at its best, as all the things that have placed Firkin at the forefront of the European scene are there: powerful vocals, top-notch fiddle and tin whistle, a solid rhythm section and a great guitarist.

The next song is titled “Flowers”. It’s based on an Irish song recorded by Altan on their “The Red Crow” album (1990), “The Flower of Magherally”. The song is improved by a kick-ass tin whistle tune.

Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye” gets the Firkin treatment. The song has been recorded by a lot of bands, included The Tossers and Dropkick Murphys, but Firkin always add something special to their renditions.

The digital version from Amazon has only these tracks, but the digipack physical version has a bonus track: “Focimese”.

Into the Night” is an amazing EP to whet appetites. But we want more. Come on! Release a full album soon. We love you!

Tracklisting:

1 - Into the Night 2:35
2 - Flowers 3:43
3 - Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye 2:38

4 - Focimese 3:14 (Bonus track on CD version)

2017-01-23 ALBUM REVIEW - KATIE'S RANDY CAT "Irish Reply" (2016)

Katie's Randy Cat "Irish Reply" self-released
Release date: December 16, 2016
Running time: 57:38,  13 tracks

Katie’s Randy Cat were our Band of December 2014  and their “For the Green” EP reached no. 7 at the Best EPs list in 2014. Two years later, the band from Toledo, OH have released their debut album. An amazing album that also made our Best albums list in 2016.

Some line-up changes have taken place and the current personnel is Steve Steel (vocals, accordion, keys and tin whistle), Petr Kharchenko (lead guitar), Greg Heldt (Rhythm guitar), Jon Zenz (bass) and Matt Jones (drums, vocals). The album opener is titled “Maggie Malone”. At the beginning it’s a tin whistle accordion version of “Molly Malone” but soon it bursts into a fast-paced Celtic punk song featuring electric guitar. Track no. 2 is the single of the album, “Irish Reply (The Last Words of Big Adam Maguire)". This is the first number on which the band's new approach can be clearly noticed: an amazing Celtic punk-rock based on the American rock classics sounds. It’s a sort of suite with different parts. Firstly, a catchy part featuring tin whistle and accordion. Secondly, after a bass line, the song gets a bluesy The Doors treatment where Eric Oblander guests on harmonica. And, finally, the main theme comes back.

Words” is an upbeat track where accordion and drums are showcased.

Rise Up” is based on “The Battle Cry of Freedom” tune (the one that Billy Bragg chose for his “There’s Power in a Union”). The rhythm section does a great job, together with the backing vocals. This amazing number is followed by another kick-ass song: “Shots with Monaghan”. It’s an Irish ballad with guests on trumpet (John Grafing) and trombone (Kevin Haberkamp) that can be filed together with the Arse Craic and The Gobshites stuff.

Fare Thee Well” is an accordion led song and Nichole Carpenter guests on vocals. Katie’s Randy Cat move to the Shane MacGowan territory on this track. Awesome. Track no. 7 is called “Wait”, a solid Celtic punk anthem that reminds me of the Hungarian band LochNesz. Guest Ted Voudouris plays violin.

Katie’s Randy Cat show a more intimate side on “On the Wind”. The violin, the guitar and the keys create the right atmosphere.

The first traditional number on the album is track no. 9, “Leaving of Liverpool”. Punk rock rendition with tin whistle, electric guitar and accordion. The next number follows a different approach, since “Thousand Names” has a funkie feel. Once again Nicole Carpenter adds backing vocals. “Old Dun Cow” is the second standard on “Irish Reply” and Katie’s Randy Cat have chosen a live rendition instead of a studio version. The result? Brilliant!

Finally, “Window (Sixty Minutes)” is a Velvet Underground infused number and “First of the Rest of the Day” is a good sing-along number to finish the album.

Katie’s Randy CatIrish Reply” is a great Celtic punk-rock album. The lads from Toledo have been able to offer something new and fresh on a field where a lot of bands don’t take any risk. Hats-off!
