2016-03-28 FREE DOWNLOAD - BLACKWATER JUKEBOX "The Howling: Forbidden Melodies Vol. 1"

Blackwater Jukebox new EP - The Howling: Forbidden Melodies Vol. 1 is available for free at Bandcamp.

The songs are adapted from “Incantations & Spell Songs of the Netotsi” (1886).

The Netotsi were a group of 19th century Romani who escaped slavery and lived in the wilds of the Carpathian Mountains, resisting all attempts to recapture them. Accounts refer to them as: terribly cruel, as cunning as foxes. The most degraded and debased of all the Gypsies: semi-feral, half-naked, living on theft and rapine.

Police would never go near the Netotsi in wild places, for they were so treacherous it was impossible to get the better of them. Peasants believed them to be shape-shifters – the children of man and wolf. Accusations of cannibalism abounded. These horrific acts were written into legal record when twenty-one Netotsi and their chief Kolomon Jona, were convicted of this crime in Prague May, 1929.

The Netotsi disappeared after World War II. Some propose Holocaust extermination. Others claim inbreeding caused extinction. A contested theory: they escaped to the Americas.

Although commissioned by the Vatican, Incantations & Spell Songs of the Netosti was later banned under threat of excommunication. Believed destroyed, the work recently remerged in the Budapest Archives after slipping from an early manuscript on Magyar hot tub etiquette.
"The Howling: Forbidden Melodies, Vol. 1"

Adapted from “Incantations & Spell Songs of the Netotsi (Outlaw Forest Gypsies of the Carpathians)” by F.H. La Rage (1886)

Cold as Death

Notorious as a hymn of demonic evocation. The melody bears similarities to the 1915 Hungarian pop sensation “My Baby Wears Yellow Boots.” The “boots” may refer to the footwear of peeled human flesh associated with the Vlkodlak – or Skinwalker.

River's Brim

A fertility chant. Experts believe this to be a prayer to Nivashi, the water goddess and most powerful deity of the Netotsi pantheon. Alternative theories suggest a connection with Wodna Muz (the water man) - a sinister monster that lies in wait to drag people to the depths.

Preciosa

A spell song for eternal youth. Expert note the similarities to the Magyar melody “Szep a Rozsam” – an extremely popular tune in the Trans-Carpathian Romani repertoire, especially at weddings and circumcisions.

Breaking Dawn (Eye of the Devil)

Originally entitled “Ochiu Dracului” or “Eye of the Devil.” A melodic old wives tale to scare wayward children. The legend tells of a dark and sinister lake where the Devil teaches an academy of the dark arts. The favorite food of the Satan and his students: ill-behaved children.

The Howling

Origin unknown. Variations found throughout Central and Eastern Europe. The tune bears uncanny resemblance to the melodic contour of wolf calls recorded by J. Arthur Thompson in the High Carpathians.

2016-03-28 REVIEW (AND FREE DOWNLOAD) 13KRAUSS "The End is Nigh" (2016)

13Krauss "The End is Nigh" TT 2016 Distributed by Potential Hardcore
Release date: March 19th, 2016
Running time: 28:40, 9 tracks

13Krauss, the band from Zaragoza, has just released their sophomore album “The End is Nigh”. The eight piece band released a kick-ass debut album at the end of 2013, “Seguir en pie”. In 2014 they played at St’Patrick’s Day festival in Madrid, went on tour (Insane Tour 2014: Germany, Belgium, France, Czech Republic) and played at the Sauga Folk Festival in Colindres (Cantabria, Spain). In 2015 they shared the stage with Brutus’ Daughters and Drink Hunters at the St.Patrick’s Day festival 2015 at the Sala López in Zaragoza and they went on tour again (European Tour 2015: Germany, the Czech Republic Belgium and France) in March/April. In Summer 2015 they played the Les Berges du Rock Fest in Pau France and El Carmucu Festival in Helguera de Iguña (Cantabria, Spain).

The End is Nigh” was officially launched last March 19 at the St.Patrick’s Day Festival 2016 at the Sala López in Zaragoza (Spain), and they shared the stage with their buddies Sons of O’Flaherty, from Vannes (Brittany). “The End is Nigh” kicks off with “Reza por tu vida” (“Pray for your Life”, one of the three songs that are sung in Spanish. Sounds of waves and bells can be heard before the band play a badass song in the Dropkick Murphys vein. You know what I mean, firing pipes, jumping accordion and plenty of gang vocals.

Apart from shifting from songs in Spanish to songs in Spanish and English, there is a sound change too, as 13Krauss open new musical horizons. For instance, the brilliant number “Doomsday” has a British fiddle punk vein to which mandolin, guitars and woah chorus are added.

The lads go back to the Dropckick Murphys end on “Flying Broken Chairs”. Catchy oe-oh chorus, pipes and streetpunk electric guitar will make you love this bar fight song.

More surprises follow. “Slow Down” is a sort of jazz manouche song that turns into a gypsy/polka fiddle led instrumental that gives Smokey Bastard a run for their money. And the next number, “En mi ataúd” (“In my Coffin”) is an infectious song with a Russian feel featuring mandolin, fiddle and accordion that The Dreadnoughts fans will enjoy. On the next song, 13Krauss move away from the polka/Eastern European sound and deliver a fantastic instrumental that sounds like an outtake from Ashley MacIsaac’s album “Hi How Are You Today’.

But there is still enough place for bagpipes punk on “The End is Nigh”. If a couple of numbers had the Dropkick Murphys stamp on them, 13Krauss also play some The Real McKenzies infused numbers. And they do it pretty well on “Miserable Bridges”, another highlight featuring bagpipes and electric guitar. The closing number, “El mañana no espera”, has a bagpipe theme reminiscent of The Real McKenzies or Tortilla Flat and is another fave. Between those tracks, 13Krauss offer a Western/cowpunk number: “The Smitting Blow”.

The End is Nigh"· comes in a jewel case. Full credits, lyrics and band members pic can be found on the12 page booklet . By the way, Celtic folk Punk and more is mentioned on the acknowledgments. Thank you guys!.

The album has been produced by the band and recorded by Marc (Inguz Studios (Zaragoza) and Coky and Raúl (Rockaway Studios, Castellón). It was mixed by Coky at Rockaway Studios and mastered by Steve Corrao in Sage Audio (Nashville, TN, USA). Guests include Manuel Franco (accordion on “Reza por tu vida”, “Slow Down’s Polka” and “En mi ataúd”), Fer from Mallacán (vocals on “El mañana no espera”), Franchi from Gen (additional guitars and backing vocals on “En mi ataúd”) and Flekins (triangle on “The Smitting Blow”).

13Krauss have released a top-notch album. No covers will be found on “The End is Nigh”, but only original stuff. And the eight guys from Aragón have opened the boundaries of their musical universe in such a way that the band has become more interesting. Go to Bandcamp, download the free digital version and once you’re acquainted with the songs, buy the CD. You won’t regret it!

2016-03-23 REVIEW - THE LANGER'S BALL "Whiskey Outlaws" (2016)

The Langer's Ball "Whiskey Outlaws" TLB006
Release date: February 12, 2016
Running time: 41:03, 12 tracks

The (steampunk) Irish punk rock band from the frozen Midwest The Langer’s Ball released their previous studio album “The Devil or the Barrel” in 2012 and it reached number 11 in our Best of 2012 list. Afterwards they released a 2 track Christmas single in 2012 and an 8 track radio session EP in 2014.

So, even if four years have passed by, the fans are already familiar with some of the new stuff. Three of the songs on the radio sessions EP have made the new album. One of them was also recorded for a Johnny Cash tribute album. And another song was recorded for a Horslips tribute album (extract available on Shite’n’Onions soundcloud).

In the meanwhile, some line-up changes have taken place and Michael (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) and Hannah (accordion, tin whistle, backing vocals) are now backed by Danny Mac (lead guitar, backing vocals), Lance Gams (bass) and Colin McGowan (drums).

Would The Langer’s Ball be able to deliver an album as tight as “The Devil or The Barrel”?. Definitely yes. “Whiskey Outlaws” is a well-balanced album with plenty of songs to please any Celtic punk fan.

The album kicks off with “Whiskey Outlaws”, an amazing self-penned cow-punk/western song that sets the pace for the rest of the CD.

The next song is The Langer’s Ball rendition of Leon Rosselson classic song “The World Turned Upside Down”. This song has been covered by the likes of Billy Bragg, Attila the Stockbroker’s Barnstormer and Oysterband. I’m really surprised by this choice, as the song tells the story of a group of people who tried to farm on common land in England in the XVIIth century. As John Jones (Oysterband) says on the “Alive and Shouting” album to the Danish crowd ”This is a song we would like to make the new national anthem of our country and probably yours as well”. But I digress. The Langer’s Ball deliver a badass cover featuring brilliant arrangements.

The band come back to the western territory with the traditional song “Jug of this” where Hannah plays accordion. It’s followed by an original: “Drinking for Two”. Michael truly knows how to write (and sing) a drinking song and this is one of the best moments on “Whiskey Outlaws”. Kick-ass song with some The Clash influences via Rancid. Hannah plays tin whistle.

God’s Gonna Cut You Down” was recorded for the Grinning Beggar’s tribute album to the Man in Black. This song features former members on drums (Derek Jaimes) and bass (Drew Miller).

Another drinking song follows: “Bottoms Up”, an addictive number with a Russian chorus where Hannah plays accordion. “Sword of Light” is The Langer’s Ball contribution to the Shite’n’Onions tribute to Horslips album. Once again the old rhythm section recorded the song, together with Trevor Jurgens on guitar. Tracks 8 is titled “The One”, a song written by Christy Moore’s youngest brother Barry Moore aka Luka Bloom.

The traditional song “Mick McGuire” gets the Langer’s Ball’s celtic punk treatment. The music is that of “Hot Asphalt”. Hannah’s whistling is really impressive and she adds “Morrison’s” jig to the song. There is no rest till the end. Firstly, “Cork Dry Gin”, the song that everybody loved when the Radio sessions EP was released. Excellent guitar work by Danny and accordion and tin whistle by Hannah. Secondly, The Langer’s Ball move to the 20’s with a medley of songs by Mort Dixon “I’m Looking over a Four Leaf Clover” and “Bye Bye Blackbird”. The former gets an updated music hall treatment with manic accordion and strong rhythm section and the latter gets a cider fueled polka treatment. Finally the album ends up with “Pigeon at the Gate”, a fast-paced song led by Hannah’s tin whistle. The song features obviously the “Pigeon on the Gate” reel.

Whiskey Outlaws” was produced by The Langer’s Ball with John Wright, who also recorded and engineered the album at The Villa. The cover painting was made by Michael Sturm and it reminds me slightly of Bad MannersReturn of the Ugly”. The album is housed in a digipack including a booklet with the lyrics to the five original songs, studio credits, song credits and personnel. The back cover photo was shot by Steven R Wolf from Other Side Images.

After listening to "Whiskey Outlaws", I have a wish: if only The Langer's Ball could release an album every year!

2016-03-15 REVIEW - BODH'AKTAN "s/t" (2016)

Bodh'aktan "s/t" GOCD1601
Release date: February 19th, 2016
Running time: 36:08, 12 tracks

There are several bands that are stretching the boundaries of the genre and releasing essential albums. They are great musicians and little by little they are following the footsteps of the likes of Fiddler’s Green and headlining the main festivals in Europe. For instance, Paddy and The Rats, Firkin, Happy Ol’ McWeasel and Bodh’aktan.

The Quebecer band’s previous studio albums were ranked no. 4 at our Best of 2012 and no. 3 at our Best of 2013 lists. Last year they issued a full covers album titled “Mixtape (Covers)” in order to whet appetites for their third studio album in French. Or should we say the third "difficult" album?

Former Bodh’aktan’s albums have always included some traditional tunes, French traditional songs, one cover of Breton bands and/or some vocal guests. On Bodh’aktan’s self-titled third album the approach is different, since most of the tracks are originals and only a tune of “La suite de la capitale” is a traditional instrumental. Although the new CD is not a concept album, the front cover (depicting the band’s baggage at an airport) and three of the songs deal with the same subject: touring Europe.

The opening track is called “Grazie Mille”, that is, thank you very much in Italian. The chorus is then in Italian, English, German and French: “Grazie Mille / All my friends/Danke schön/À la prochaine”. The Quebecer band thanks all their European fans for the moments they shared with them. This upbeat number with a Fiddler’s Green twist thanks to the accordion is one of the hottest moments on the album.

The next track is titled “Ici” (“Here”).Once again, moments on Germany, The Netherlands, France and Italy are mentioned. Bodh’aktan have enjoyed their tours in Europe and all the friends they’ve made. But it’s always great to come back home.

Besoin d’air” (“Need to breath”) is the third track. It’s the first single off “Bodh’aktan”, an amazing punk-rock number with a Ramones vibe. Urban life vs seaside life. Love that tin whistle !!!

Come back to Europe, this time to Teuillac, near Bordeaux. Celti Teuillac is a festival that is held in July  and Bodh’aktan played there in 2015. Tin whistle, accordion and fiddle are showcased on this North American roots infused song.

Longtemps” is a toned down number featuring bagpipes that is followed by a short epic instrumental titled “Interlude (Lourde nuit)”.

Bodh’aktan “open hostilities” again with “Une autre nuit” (“Another Night”), a kick-ass song about a bartender’s life. Musically, the song is the bastard son of the early Mahones and Great Big Sea.

The sound goes harder with “André”, a fast-paced bagpipes punk number with an infectious sing-along chorus and fantastic guitar work.

Pourtant” (“However) is a ballad written by Bodh’aktan’s friend Keven Landry. Add some drops of Jacques Brel, some bagpipes, electric guitar and a Scorpions attitude and you’ll get “Pourtant”. That’s the magic of the alchemy.

Is it possible a Bodh’aktan album without a set of tunes? Of course not, they are a must have. Enjoy “La suite de la capitale”, another highlight on this CD.

The album is arriving to its end, but there are some surprises to be unveiled. Back to Europe again? Ben non. Let’s go to Lousiana !!! “Samedi soir au fait dodo” is the most festive number on the album, a badass Cajun/zydeco song. The next “Cotton Eyed Joe”? Sure

The last number is a poignant ballad reminiscent of De Dannan from the “Ballroom” era. Well balanced mix of tin whistle, fiddle and accordion, together with a brass section at the end. A true gem.

The album includes an 8 page booklet with all the lyrics to the songs, studio credits, songs credits, acknowledgments and contact info. Original bassist Rob Langlois recorded the album, but he’s left the band and the new bass player is Benoit Claveau, who also co-wrote the lyrics to a couple of songs on this CD (“Longtemps” et “Samedi soir au fait dodo”)

Bodh’aktan have done it again. Yes, the new album is not as perfect as its eldest brothers from 2011 and 2013. But Bodh’aktan have taken some risks instead of repeating a formula, and the final result is quite enjoyable. Another Top 10 album by Montreal’s finest !!!

2016-03-14 VIDEO - MENEGUINNES "Bergamo"

Meneguinnes video for "Bergamo", first single off their upcoming album "A chi non dorme".

2016-03-14 FREE DOWNLOADS - THE SWEET COLLEENS DISCOGRAPHY

The Sweet Colleens are a five-piece Celtic roots based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their style is called fiddle-fueled accordion-infused celtic-cajun folk pop.

The Sweet Colleens are Dave Bade, Rich Larson, Jeremy Greenhouse, Wolf Loescher and Pete Sandvik —accomplished multi-instrumentalists who together fuse their diverse musical backgrounds into a high-energy, infectious, and crowd-pleasing mix of “Celtic folk-rock and alt. country/Americana, with Cajun and Caribbean seasonings.” With infectious original songs, warm vocal harmonies, and fiery instrumental arrangements, the Sweet Colleens are winning a loyal local following and fans across the Midwest and beyond.

Ex-pat Canadian songwriter and fiddler Jeremy Greenhouse and Minneapolis accordionist Pete Sandvik put together a band for a Y2K New Year’s show at Kieran’s Pub in Minneapolis. The Colleens went on to establish themselves as the Twin Cities’ favorite pub band and -- since the release of the band’s debut CD "Flop" and its celebrated sophomore release "Half a Mile from Home" -- has expanded its audience through shows and festivals in the Midwest and even a 2-week jaunt to France.

The Sweet Colleens CD "Half a Mile from Home" showcases the band’s trademark musical dexterity with 16 tracks that draw on a remarkable range of roots music – feisty medleys of Irish and Canadian fiddle tunes, a raucous cover of The Pogues’ “Fall From Grace,” Cajun-tinged original songs featuring performances by Michael Doucet of BeauSoleil, a folk-rock ballad about Jesse James, a tender waltz featuring the Trinidadian steel drum, and a dozen energetic and raw alt-country original songs about love, life, death and everything in between – all pulled together into a seriously fun and uniquely Minnesotan sound.

The Sweet Colleens bring diverse musical backgrounds to bear on their truly unique folk-rock sound. Jeremy Greenhouse (vocals, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), has recorded and performed extensively with Celtic, rock, Cajun and country acts in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Pete Sandvik (accordion, piano, guitar, vocals), brings Cajun and rock influences, classically-trained dexterity, and a not-so-secret love for the Grateful Dead to his accordion playing with the Sweet Colleens. Dave Bade (bass, vocals) offers rock-solid bass during the Sweet Colleens live shows, and everything from bluegrass picking guitar solos to cello on their recordings. Finally, drummer Wolf Loescher’s style draws not only on the country-swing of his native Texas, but on the rich bagpipe-laced Celtic music of Scotland, where he lived for several years before founding the acclaimed Celtic-rock band Jiggernaut. Together, The Sweet Colleens offer a unique high-energy roots sound.

"The Monkey Dance: All the Kids Are Doin' It!" is the first foray into kids music by the Minneapolis-based Sweet Colleens, but the genre is clearly a natural fit for these good-natured denizens of the roots music world.

Released in January 2010 with two packed concerts to over 600 people at Minneapolis’s legendary Cedar Cultural Center, "The Monkey Dance" features more musical instruments than you could shake a banana at. The predominantly original songs range in style from funky to folky, Cajun to Caribbean, sad to sentimental to...well...just plain goofy. Special guests on the CD include The Minneapolis Youth Chorus and Michelle Campagne of the seminal French-Canadian folk-pop group Hart Rouge.

While "The Monkey Dance" is quickly winning over the under-10 crowd (not to mention minivan CD players everywhere), parents will also find themselves humming along to the Sweet Colleens’ sophisticated, rootsy arrangements—kids music that does it up right without dumbing it down. Happy listening... and don't forget your monkey-dancing shoes!

The Twin Cities’ Sweet Colleens have taken their genre-busting Celti-Cajun Folk-Pop sound to new heights with "Closer to the Sky". With their feet planted firmly in American-roots music, the Sweet Colleens bring a spirit of joy and adventure to their 4th studio release, embracing the intimate melodies of traditional folk, crafting bold musical arrangements, and harnessing the power of modern rock.

The 11 tracks on "Closer to the Sky" take listeners on a wild musical ride, bridging diverse styles with seamless integrity. And the band’s original songs and instrumentals travel a beautiful, broken world: from the Great Plains to the beaches of San Diego, from smoky Toronto nightclubs to Cajun dancehalls, from Irish pubs to a quiet street in Nordeast Minneapolis. With "Closer to the Sky", The Sweet Colleens have redefined their sound while staying true to the emotional core of their past.

2016-03-09 REVIEW - THE CLOVES AND THE TOBACCO "Across the Horizon" (2016)

The Cloves and the Tobacco "Across the Horizon" WLRV-006-2016
Release date: March 2nd, 2016
Running time: 40:22, 10 tracks

At last! The Cloves and The Tobacco, one of our favourite bands from Indonesia, have just released the follow-up to their debut album “The Day with No Sun”. And one thing is for sure: “Across the Horizon” is a killer album. The Cloves and The Tobacco have invested a lot of passion and musicianship on this CD and the result is outstanding: kick-ass songs, excellent arrangements, brilliant production and a top-notch digipack packaging.

Their latest offering consists of 9 original songs, together with a song written by the omnipresent David Watts aka Spider Mahone ("Too Much Trouble"). There are no covers, since “The Fields of Athenry” is used as a bridge on one of the tracks, but it’s not the main theme on the song.
From the first notes of the street punk opening track “Too Much Trouble” to the last instrumental number “Across the Horizon”, TCATT deliver a bunch of songs intended to share their lives and experiences with the Celtic punk fans from the 5 continents.

As it has been previously said, the album starts with “Too Much Trouble”. This song is an amazing Rancid infused number with catchy chorus and gang vocals. It’s followed by “You’ll Never Know”, a song with the TCATT classic sound based on hypnotic banjo picking, in yer face whistling and haunting fiddling.

Track number 3 is a personal fave: “When the War is Over” is a poignant ballad about love in the time of war with a The Pogues twist. The next song is catchy as hell: “Sally O’Riordan”, a tale about a working girl tribulations on a Monday morning. I’m sure that you’ll end up singing along when you listen to this number. The Cloves and The Tobacco don’t slow down with “The Whiskey Tales”, a song about themselves. The arrangements are fantastic on this well written song and every single member of the band shines. Nana Nofi guests on female vocals.

Pure & Innocent” shows the band’s quieter side. The lyrics are about the innocence of the children and how good it would be for the world if they could keep it when they grow up. The next track is titled “And the Rain Will Fall”, an upbeat song about a prisoner’s life.

The Town that We Love So Well” is another standout number, a badass song about a September night in their hometown, Yogyakarta. “The Old Harbor” is a song about emigration, a goodbye song. I love this kind of song. While “Far Away in Australia” has a happy end (“Now has come the time when I’m ready to welcome at last the girl I left behind”), “The Old Harbor” is an open-ended song. The album is over with the title track, “Across the Horizon”, an amazing instrumental.

The album packaging is a labour of love: the guys from WLRV Records always do a great job and this one is not an exception. Great 4 panel digipack with a 12 page booklet where all the lyrics and all the studio and song credits can be found. There are 2 thank you pages with a global band’s section and a section for every band member. The Cloves and the Tobacco thank the likes of Andries van den Broeck aka Dutch Irish Bastard, Cathy Shannon, Andrew Watts aka Spider Mahone, the people in charge of the main Celtic punk blogzines, podcasts and radio stations (Waldo Kinksmarkham from Celtic Folk Punk and More, Eddie from London Celtic Punks, Phil from Paddy Rock, Nico from MacSlon’s Irish Radio, Irish punk, Alex from Ukraine and Vladimir Kipelov from Russia), all the Celtic punk/Irish punk groups on Facebook (Indonesia, London, Brazil, Hungary, Denmark, Italia, Zaragoza), all the Celtic punk bands from Indonesia and a lot of Celtic punk / folk punk bands from all over the world.

The Cloves and The TobaccoAcross the Horizon” is a breath of fresh air for the Celtic punk scene. This album should be a Top Ten album at the end of the year, since it has all the things that fans should appreciate: hard work, modesty, a different Celtic approach, love and respect for others bands’ music and a feeling of community. Hats-off!!!
