REVIEW - ZUNAME "Pipes Not Dead" EP (2015)

Zuname "Pipes Not Dead" Gigant Records /Distemper Records / Zuname Records
Release date: September 21, 2015
Running time: 16:03, 5 tracks

Russian band Zuname is back with a new line-up and a new CD. Yarosh (vocals, guitar), Andy (pipes), Vadik (guitar), Santey (bass) and Simon (drums) have just delivered a 5 track EP that has been released together by Gigant Records, Distemper Records and Zuname Records.

Pipes Not Dead” is a powerful bagpipes punk EP. There are The Real McKenzies infused songs, like the kick-ass opening track “Moscow”, and numbers with a European feel (for instance, the short anthem “Zuname”, that reminds me of Die Dodelsäcke). “Freedom” and “Music from the Heart” are amazing tracks too. Apart from those bagpipes punk tracks, the closing number, “Pirate Song”, is an interesting guitar led pirate metal song.

The Russian scene is alive and kicking and Zuname are one of the bands at its forefront. If you enjoy bagpipes punk, then spend some dollars and grab a copy of “Pipes Not Dead".

Tracklist:

1. Moscow 03:48
2. Zuname 01:35
3. Freedom 03:52
4. Music From The Heart 02:23
5. Pirate Song 04:14

REVIEW - THE WAXIES "Down With The Ship" (2015)

The Waxies "Down with the Ship" Self-released
Release date: September 15, 2015
Running time: 43:05, 12 tracks

Irish/gypsy punk-rock band from Grand Rapids The Waxies are back with their third album, “Down with the Ship”. Their previous released was reviewed here and we loved it, so we were looking forward to listening to their next album. And one thing is for sure: “Down with the Ship” is their best album to date.

Branden Garner (mandolin), Mack Adama (drums), Conor Bardallis (bass), Michael Prokopchuk (fiddle), Miles Anderson (guitar), Mikay McKibbin (tin whistle) and Jesse Powers (banjo) officially launched “Down with The Ship” last September 19th together with their buddies Stone Clover. The album begins with “Saintly Anne”, an infectious number about a special woman that can rival with Bastard Bearded Irishmen stuff. It’s followed by “Down With The Ship”, a nautical song where the band sound really tight.

Track no. 3 is called “For Those We Know”. It’s a top notch song in memory of Nate Carey that can be filed together with Fiddler’s Wage (formerly Callanach) and Dust Rhinos best material.

The next number is an Irish tune, “The Silver Spear” reel. Brilliant rendition and excellent choice.

Terrible Beauty” lyrics were written by Jim Hines of Naples, Florida. It’s a poignant song about Irish history and diaspora.

Track no. 6 is called “Flotsam”, another seafaring number with badass Arabic fiddle arrangements. Rhythm section also shines on this song.

Carry On” is one of my faves too. This amazing number has a similar feel to The TossersThe Emerald City” or The Whisky PriestsThink Positive!” albums.

The Cure” is a fantastic “drinking” song that evolves from a mid-tempo number to an energetic end with a slight ska twist.

The Waxies move to the cow punk territory with “How Can a Man”, a song that I’m sure that the lads from The Men They Couldn’t Hang would appreciate.

Time for a standard. The Waxies deliver a kick-ass rendition of “Step it Out Mary”. Boy and girl vocals and interesting banjo and fiddle arrangements can be heard on this song.

The second instrumental on the album is titled “Taksim”. This self-penned tune features great mandolin, fiddle and rythm section. As the title comes from a well-known square in Istambul, the sound is then Turkish.

The album is over with “The Parting Glass”, the second standard on “Down with the Ship” and the perfect end. Good job by whistler and fiddler.

Down with the Ship” comes in a four panel digipack. No lyrics booklet is included, but all of the lyrics can be found at Bandcamp. Full credits, band’s line-up and thank yous are stated on the digipack. The original nautical themed cover art was made by Lawrence Kole. The Waxies’ previous album “Wasted Saints” was produced by fiddler Michael Prokopchuk and The Waxies and “Down with the Ship” has been produced by bassist Conor Bardallis and The Waxies. The result is a well-balanced sound where every single instrument gets the right treatment.

Are The Waxies the usual raucous Celtic punk band? Probably not. But, is “Down with the Ship” an interesting album? Yes, a very interesting album and a must have for Celtic infused music fans. The Waxies are a tight band and they are able to work in different fields (Irish, gypsy, “pirate”, Mid-East folk…) and assemble a flawless album. “Down with the Ship” has the right stuff for me: excellent self-penned song, some instrumentals and a couple of chosen standards. Go ahead and buy this gem.

REVIEW - O'LEARY "Red Roads of Home" (2015)

O'Leary "Red Roads of Home" Self-released
Release date: October 13th, 2015
Running time: 35:03, 9 tracks

O’Leary are a band hailing from Prince Edward Island, one of the Canadian maritime provinces. O’Leary are Danny Dowling (vocals, banjos and tin whistle), Behn McIlwaine (guitar), Josh Maccarville (drums), Shaun Patterson (bass), Garrett Curley (vocals, mandolin, bouzouki and acoustic guitars) and Chris Gaudette (guitar, vocals). Josh stepped up as the band’s new drummer after the recording of the album, and former member Ryan Hale recorded the drums.

If you have not heard the band’s previous single “The Miser of Morell” (available at Bandcamp), you could think that they would be a Celtic punk oufit inspired by the likes of Great Big Sea. However, after having given several spins to the O’Leary’s debut album, you’ll noticed that they have followed a different path: Appalachian influences and punk goes metal songs.

"Red Roads of Home” kicks off with “The Miser of Morell”. Imagine a hillbilly version of The Electrics showcasing excellent banjo picking and electric guitar work.

Track no. 2 is titled “Red Roads of Home”. It has an a capella beginning and every instrument is joining in little by little. This song has an Aussie influenced sound à la The Rumjacks.

Ruddiger” is another highlight on the album and O’Leary come back to the hillbilly sound with a punk twist. It is followed by “The Gallows”, a song that reminds me of Vagrant Nation.

The next number is the only Irish standard on the album. “Whiskey in The Jar”. Interesting banjo and mandolin led version of this classic.

Cold Black Sea” and “The Ship is Going Down” deal with sea themes and both of them featured metal guitars.

Trevor’s Quest” is one of my faves, a kickass self-penned instrumental, the kind of stuff that I enjoy.

Finally “Mountain Dew” is a brilliant rendition of the Appalachian classic song by Bascom Lamar Lundsford.

Regarding the packaging, “Red Roads of Home” comes in jewel case. The album was recorded at various locations and mixed and mastered by Chris Gaudette. The album artwork was made by Shaun Patterson and the design by Danny Dowling. Full credits and band's social media links are provided.

Several amazing albums are being released along the last quarter of the year, and O’LearyRed Roads of Home” is at the top of them. If you love mandolins and banjos, storytelling, the Canadian feel and a fresh sound different from the main schools of the genre, then hurry up and pick up a copy of O’Leary’s debut album.

Tracklist:

1 The Miser of Morell 3:48
2 Red Roads of Home 4:06
3 Ruddiger 3:24
4 The Gallows     O'Leary 5:10
5 Whiskey in the Jar 2:27
6 Cold Black Sea 5:26
7 The Ship Is Going Down 3:24
8 Trevor's Quest 3:22
9 Mountain Dew 3:40

VIDEO - THE DEAD MAGGIES "Jørgen Jørgenson"

The Dead Maggies' new single matches their raucous folk-punk with a tale of the improbable yet true Jørgen Jørgenson. A pirate, a convict, a king and a drunkard, the title character is the perfect foil for The Dead Maggies' mix of foot-stomping folk and hollering punk antics.

A little-known legend, Danish-born Jørgenson once ruled Iceland for 50 days, and spent his final 14 years in Tasmania. When it came time to shoot the video for the single, the venue was clear: the Yukon, a fully restored Danish tall ship. “He was an adventurer who wrote his own legends while drinking, gambling, spying and pirating,” says vocalist/guitarist GT Mongrel. “He took on armies. He took on whole countries. He faced the executioners block and survived. He lived life as hard as life can be lived. He was a punk.”

The single is the first taste from The Dead Maggies’ forthcoming debut album Well Hanged, due for release on November on Folk ’Til Ya Punk Records. The album will feature Jørgen Jørgenson alongside 11 other tales culled from the dark and oppressive past of Australia’s southern penal colony, all set to music that finds the common energy, melody and attitude of folk and punk.

Formed in 2013 shortly after Margaret Thatcher’s death, The Dead Maggies are a new take on the melding of folk and punk, finding the common threads of story, energy and attitude between the two that ABC Radio Hobart has called “their own genre: Tasmanian convict punk.”

DERINA HARVEY BAND WANTS YOU TO PRE-ORDER THEIR NEW ALBUM

Hello friends of Derina Harvey Band!

We don't email you folks very often, but we've got some big news to share.

We have a new album coming out in March, 2016 called "Rove and Go" and we've partnered with PledgeMusic to give it to you early! The pre-order is now open through our PledgeMusic website.

When you order anything from this website (everything from music lessons to birthday phone calls to paintings to packs of playing cards!), included in your purchase is a digital download of "Rove and Go" which will be made available to you by January 5th, 2016, months ahead of the official release!

That said, if we reach 100% of our goal, we promise to give you the digital download earlier than January, perhaps just in time for holiday festivities? Also, if we reach 100% of our goal, we will make a vinyl edition of the new album, which would be pretty sweet! In the meantime, on the PledgeMusic site, we'll give you updates as we finish the album and also access to exclusive content over the course of the pre-order campaign.

So, if you enjoy what we do in Derina Harvey Band:

REVIEW - IN FOR A PENNY "The Guardian Angel Sessions" (2015)

In for a Penny "The Guardian Angel Sessions"
Release date: September 13, 2015
Running time: 34:33, 9 tracks

In for a Penny started in March 2015 in theSavannah/Tybee Island area (Georgia, USA). When SeanMcNally (mandolin, vocals), Henny “da butcha” (drums) and Jeremy Riddle (guitar and vocals) are asked what can of music they play, they usually respond with “it’s kinda of Irish with a punk feel and some weird 80’s covers. As accurate as that description is, it still leaves people with no idea what the heck to expect, so we remedied that situation a few weeks ago by setting up our gear in Jeremy’s living room and hitting record as we jammed through nine of our favorite songs. The result will give you a good idea of what to expect from the rowdy Irish craic that is In For A Penny.”

I dare say that In for a Penny are balladeers of the XXIst century. They take the spirit of The Dubliners and add some punk twist to the mix.  Other definition would be a sort of a stripped version of The Tossers.

The Guardian Sessions” is a back to basics album. Don’t expect polished studio stuff. The guys have recorded it at home and the live atmosphere can be felt all along the album. Most of the songs are self-penned material (6 tracks) and there are only two standards and a The Bollox cover.

Tattletale” opens the album and it’s one of my faves. I’m sure that you’ll grab a pint of stout after having listened to the first lines.

Track no. 2 is titled “God Created Whiskey” and it’s a song that will become a classic pub song.

The next number is “Lucky Enough”, another proof that these guys have pushed the ballads to the punk territory.

Dead for so Long”, and “If I Get to Heaven” are rough at the edges, but both are kick-ass songs that remind me of Dave King’s songwriting (file them together with “The Worst Day Since Yesterday”).

Between those songs, In for a Penny offer their own rendition of “Johnny Jump Up”. It’s a song that I particularly love and In for a Penny’s take is amazing. It begins slowly, but little by little it’s becoming a hypnotic song.

The other standard is “Danny Boy”. This song was covered by several bands in the last years, but In for a Penny version is very interesting too.

Sean and the guys are very proud of being allowed by The Bollox to cover their hit “Tura Lu”. By the way, The Bollox album was reviewed at Celtic Folk Punk and More in 2011.

Guardian Angel” closes the album and it has a crooner feel that I have enjoyed.

The album front cover depicts and angel and the back cover is a band pic at Fort Pulaski National Monument shot by Wen McNally.

The Guardian Angel Sessions” can be a no frills album, but it’s full of attitude and the kind of imperfect gems that Celtic folk-punk fans love.

Tracklist:

1 - Tattletale 2:41
2 - God Created Whiskey 3:20
3 - Lucky Enough 2:20
4 - Dead for So Long 4:43
5 - Johnny Jump Up 4:35
6 - If I Get to Heaven 3.39
7 - Danny Boy 3:32
8 - Tura Lu (The Bollox cover) 4:13
9 - Guardian Angel 5:27
