REVIEW - THE DETONATORS "My World" Destiny Records Cat. no. Destiny-153 (2013)

The Detonators "My World" Destiny Records, Cat no. Destiny-153
Release date: 30 August 2013
Running time: 33:44, 11 tracks

My World” is the follow-up to The DetonatorsR’n’R Keeps Me Alive” EP. The guys from Vojvodina have put aside the rockabilly and/or psychobilly influences and have pushed forward the Social Distortion infused material adding more Clash drops via Rancid.

One thing is clear: The Detonators are a Rock’n’Roll band. With a folk twist, but a R’n’R band. They told it clearly, “R’n’R Keeps Me Alive”, and most of the tracks deal with classic R’n’R topics: highway, trucks, driving, girls, beer, being in a band …

The songs to check out: “Let’s Go”, an opening track in the Rancid vein, “My World”, with their Mick Jones style guitar work, “Far Away”, a R’n’R à la Social Distortion, “Away from Home”, rockabilly with some Rancid touches, “Hey Baby”, a catchy number, “Kings & Queens”, a complaint about modern society with a Pogues background and “A Word or Two”, a song about friendship moving to the Dropkick Murphys end.

Another thing that I would like to point out: the artwork and packaging. The front and back cover drawings are amazing, and the digipack packaging is a real labour of love. All the lyrics and credits are included.

If you like Rock’n’Roll backed with accordion and mandolin, the English band The Devil’s Rejects stuff or Manu Chao’s R’n’R numbers with The Hot Pants and Mano Negra, then get this album and don’t miss The Detonators shows. BTW, they will be touring Spain in March, playing at the Saint Patrick’s Day Festival at Gruta 77 in Madrid.

REVIEW - CAPTAIN JACK'S ARMY "Royal Arms" EP (2013)

Captain Jack's Army "Royal Arms" EP
Release date: 13 December 2013
Running time: 19:05, 5 tracks

Waves are coming regularly from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. A folk-rock wave (Hedningarna, Värttinä, Garmarna, Gjallarhorn …), a hard rock wave (The Hellacopters, Backyard Babies, Gluecifer, Turbonegro …), a crime writers wave (Henning Mankell, Stieg Larsson, Jo NesbØGunnar StaalesenAssa Larsson, Camilla Läckberg, Mari Jungstedt, Anna Jansson …) … Regarding Celtic Punk,  the Norwegian band Greenland Whalefishers has been around for a while with their Pogue Ramone sound, but the wave has not  risen until Sir Reg has arrived. New Celtic punk bands are coming from the Scandinavian countries and fans are wondering which ones are worth hearing.

Captain Jack’s Army is a new band hailing from Linköping. Pär Palm (vocals), Alexandra Ekelöf (fiddle), Jonas Gustavsson (mandolin, banjo, guitars), Andy Petterson (bass), Daniel Börefelt (guitar), Oscar Stenhoff (accordion) and Jack Karlsson (drums) released a digital single in October 2013, "One fo All". It has been followed at the end of 2013 by a 5 track EP titled “The Royal Arms EP”, although the title isn’t  stated on the cover.

The songs on “Royal Arms” can be filed under three labels:

1) Fast-paced Celtic punk anthems. The opening number, “Devils Eye” is a rocking fiddle led number with amazing gang vocals and strong guitar sound. Track no. 3, “Royal Arms” is the best song on the EP: a catchy Celtic punk song about a pub featuring fiddle, accordion, banjo and gruff vocals. The last track on the EP, “Worker’s Song”, was already covered by Dropkick Murphys on their  “Blackout” album. Captain Jack’s Army is an powerful rendition featuring fiddle instead of bagpipes and a fantastic punk goes metal guitar work.

2) British fiddle punk/rock ballad. “Stranger” is a song that will grow on you. The beginning is acoustic, featuring accordion, acoustic guitar, fiddle and two vocalists. Little by little the song goes faster and drums and bass are added to the mix. A La M.O.D.A. meets the Levellers song. Awesome stuff.

3) Swedish folk-rock infused song. The fiddle on “Queen of Chaos” has that Swedish folk twist. IMHO, this is the weakest number on the EP.

So, every single song on “Royal Arms” has been reviewed. Which is the verdict? Captain Jack’s Army "Royal Arms" is a kick ass EP and the band's sound is really tight. In other words, yes, they are worth hearing. Go ahead and buy this EP and the previous digital single!

Tracklist:

1 - Devil's Eye 2:52
2 - Stranger 5:43
3 - Queen of Chaos 3:40
4 - Royal Arms 3:16
5 - Worker's Song 3:33

REVIEW - CHARLIE'S RUM AND THE CHAPLIN "Ballad of Motherland" (2013)

Charlie's Rum and The Chaplin "Ballad of Motherland" (2013)
Release date: 23 December 2013
Running time:37:10, 10 tracks

Charlie’s Rum and The ChaplinBallad of Motherland” is the new chapter of the Indonesian Celtic punk history. The South East Asian scene is one of the most active scenes in the world. It’s not easy to release an album there, but little by little more bands are joining the ranks of the likes of The Working Class Symphony or The Cloves and The Tobacco.

The main instruments in the band’s sound are the fiddle, the banjo, the tin whistle and the accordion. The banjo is present all around the album and the fiddle is played with the special Indonesian style. The songs are sung either in Indonesian or in broken English, but the tunes are really addictive. Moreover, the choice of the numbers is quite interesting: an instrumental, a lot of self-penned songs and only one standard (“The Irish Rover”)

My selection: “Ballad of Motherland”, the instrumental that opens the album featuring banjo and tin whistle with early Blood or Whiskey reminiscences, “Pirate without a Ship” and “Surabaya Alive”, both of them are fast-paced numbers with a sound similar to that of The Cloves and The Tobacco, “Sukarnoisme”, another upbeat punk folk number with a Brutus’ Daughters twist, and “The Golden Age of Piracy”, a festive party song. “The Irish Rover” rendition is really tight and the last number of the CD, “Under the Revolution Flag”,  shows a different side of the band, a guitar driven punk rock song without traditional instruments.

Ballad of Motherland” won’t disappoint the fans that enjoy the Indonesian Celtic punk sound.

Tracklist:

01 - Ballad of Motherland 2:36
02 - Indonesia Raya 2:56
03 - Sukarnoisme 2:29
04 - The Golden Age of Piracy 4:53

REVIEW - SIX PINTS LEFT "Rebellious Radio" (2013)

Six Pints Left "Rebellious Radio"
Release date: November 22, 2013
Running time: 22:21, 6 tracks

Hungary and the Czech Republic have both burgeoning Celtic punk /rock scenes.  And Germany it’s the Celtic kingdom if we take into account the quantity (and quality) of Celtic punk/rock bands. So, it’s a little bit strange that the news from the scene in a neighbour country like Austria are quite scarce. Fortunately, a young and fresh band hailing from Vienna wants  to change that situation.

Six Pints Left, the band formerly known as a Six Pints Left to a Dirty Dozen, are Stefan Nader (vocals, guitar), Thomas Kautnek (great Highland bagpipes, tin whistle, guitar), Martin Dvoran (bass), Doris Danzer (fiddle), Manuel Ruzicka (accordion, banjo, guitar) and Clemens Pöchhacker (drums and background vocals). “Rebellious Radio” is their first work, a 6 track mini-album that was released at the end of 2013 whose release party took place in Vienna last January 9th, 2014.

The band sounds really tight, with an amazing rhythm section (bass or upright bass and drums), a fiddle all around and the right selection of the other traditional instruments for every song (bagpipes on tracks 2 and 6, accordion on track 1, banjo on track 4, tin whistle on track 6).

The guys and girl define their music as Folk’n’Roll.  It’s true that they visit different musical territories and the results are really interesting: The Porters meet Flogging Molly on “Rebellious Radio”, new wave European bagpipes punk on “Life in Your Hands”, German bagpipes punk influences on “Judgement Day”, Johnny Cash shadow over “Beast of Property”, cow punk à la The Men They Couldn’t Hang on “Gobshite” and their own stamp on my favourite number, “The Guns of Hegemony”.

Don’t wait too long. E-mail the band and add this CD to your collection

Tracklist:

1 - Rebellious Radio 3:17
2 - Life in Your Hands 3:12
3 - Beast of Property 4:06
4 - Gobshite 3:40
5 - The Guns of Hegemony 4:47
6 - Judgement Day 3:17

REVIEW - McDERMOTT'S 2 HOURS "Anticlockwise" (2013)

McDermott's 2 Hours "Anticlockwise" OTF
Release date: October 20, 2013
Running time: 58:39, 14 tracks

I guess that everybodys knows the story. McDermott's 2 Hours were the band that inspired the Levellers. Their song "Dirty Davey" was covered on the Levellers self-titled third album. Besides, a lot of fans that missed their debut album that was released in 1989 were able to buy the re-issue from 1994 through the Levellers On the Fiddle fan club.

After the band's split, Nick and Tim were backed by the Levellers rythm section (Charlie and Jeremy) and released three albums together, "World Turned Upside Down", "Claws and Wings" and "Disorder", which were released under the name McDermott's 2 Hours vs Levellers. A third period started with "Goodbye to the Madhouse", when McDermott's 2 Hours became a full band again.

Nick Burbridge and his band mates will be releasing a new album in 2014: "Besieged". But the guys at On The Fiddle thought that McDermott's 2 Hours career deserved a "Best of" album and then "Anticlockwise" was released at the end of October 2013.

The 14 track album covers the band whole discography, with and without the Levellers rythm section. Moreover, two tracks from the forthcoming album have been added. All of the songs that have been picked showcase Nick songwriting; but if more songs songs had been added, the musical balance would be more appealling to a newer audience. Taking into account that the running time is less than 59 minutes, I would have included more tracks. I love the two instrumental sets on "The Enemy Within", but I can understand that they are not original numbers. Nevertheless, I miss songs such as "Boys of the Blackstuff" and "The Fields Round Ballyclare" from their debut album,"Blue Bandana" and "Laying the Sligo Maid" from the second one and "Travelling to Cockaigne" from the third one.

I didn't enjoy "Disorder" when it was originally released and after some spins to "Anticlockwise" I feel that there are too much tracks from that album. However, the songs that have been chosen from "Goodbye to the Madhouse" are excellent and the last numbers (the new songs) are amazing.

Anyway, there is a lot of amazing songs on the album: "Dirty Davey", "Fox on the Run", "Harry Brewer", "Song of a Brother", "River", "Trickster", "All in Your Name" ... I don't know if "Anticlockwise" is McDermott's 2 Hours definitive collection, but at least it's a fantastic album.

Tracklist:

01 - Dirty Davey 3:12 ("The Enemy Within", track 1, 1989)
02 - Fox On The Run 4:28 ("The Enemy Within", track 9, 1989)
03 - Darkness and Sail 3:13 ("The Enemy Within", track 6, 1989)
04 - World Turned Upside Down 4:39 ("World Turned Upside Down", track 1, 2001)

06 - Song Of A Brother 2:17 ("Claws and Wings", track 3, 2003)
07 - Tod The Ranter 4:13 ("Disorder", track 1, 2004)
