BLEEDING HEARTS - LOOKING FOR A FIDDLER

(From the band's mailing list)

"WE NEED A PERMANENT FIDDLE PLAYER

First of all, this is a plug - but for us!

So if you know anyone, please point this out to them, or if you are a fiddler yourself, and would like to apply - email me: foxie@bleedinghearts.co.uk

Hopefully, you/they/them will know what we are all about. But just in case - those with tory tendencies might be best advised not to apply, although we are an equal opportunities un-employer.

Mark has been helping us out since the middle of last year and does it with a BIG smile on his face, and while we love him lots, he is already heavily committed (not in an insane way) to other stuff and married to work (fool). And when a band has plans for gigs, tours, songwriting, recording etc it is always best to have someone who is involved in that on a permanent basis to be part of the whole. It's much nicer innit all-round.

So - can you HELP?!

C&N MANAGEMENT

Paul and Marcus gave us a big hand last year and we are deeply grateful to them for all of their assistance. However, they now need to concentrate more on earning their own crust, so we are back standing on our own 8 feet, hopefully 10, like the puppies we are off a lead. We wish them both all the best!

PARTISAN - THE NEW ACOUSTIC(ISH) ALBUM

The much anticipated (by us) acoustic(ish) album, although Ewan is getting an increasingly bigger pedalboard to match my own. I say acoustic as that is the plan but there may be the odd dash of plugged-in soundwaves in there somewhere. We can't help ourselves.

We have enough songs, we are getting recording dates together, we are trying to accumulate some mobile recording gear (a toughie with no money) so we 'hope' to be in a position to have a finished product later this year. This of course depends on a) getting a fiddler to play on it although there will be some fiddle free tracks b) whether we have the money to press it - right now that may be the biggest challenge of all.

FOLK N GLORY

Oh yeah, it's received rave reviews in Rock n Reel and Froots as well as a multitude of other mags and online sources... you can still buy it from us even though stocks are reducing and we have no intention of re-pressing. Just ask, email, or buy online or at a gig of your choice.

FORUM

Contact 'keeping it nice since 1972 Ewan Porter hyphen Stevens' if you wanna tell him a story... you can do this via our Facebook which a google reveals is 'bleedingheartsonline' apparently, or just email him at: Ewan@bleedinghearts.co.uk. If that doesn't work, grab him in Lichfield High Street... sorry, Brownhills, or in the pub somewhere... he likes Old Speckled Hen.

That's all for now!

THE GOOD SHIP ARE SETTING SAIL FOR CANADA

(From the band's mailing list)

"Greetings from The Good Ship crew!

As you may have seen via such newfangled things as Facebook and Twitter, we are about to set sail for the distant shores of Canada, to showcase our wares at the huge and daunting Canadian Music Week. This is a great honour and big challenge for us and we've been hard at work getting ready.

To help us along the way we've been running a crowdfunding campaign, you know those things where we promise to give you cool, weird stuff in return for modest donations. The response has been overwhelming and we've nearly raised our target of $7000. In fact we're only a few hundred shy of the mark.

So please check out the awesome things we have on offer, including a home cooked dinner by the entire band at your place! Or a postcard from Canada, hand written and signed by every one of us!

If you can't afford to contribute you can help simply by sharing the link on Facebook or telling your friends.

Go here to get on board.... http://www.pozible.com/project/16366

Thanks for your continued support, it means the world to us."

REVIEW - UNCLE HAMISH AND THE HOOLIGANS "Operators Are Standing By" (2012)

Uncle Hamish and The Hooligans "Operators Are Standing By"
Release date: 2012
Running time:40:22, 8 tracks

Operators Are Standing By” is the fourth album released by Uncle Hamish and The Hooligans, a five-piece bagpipes rock band from Western North Carolina. Their sound is reminiscent of (hard) rock bands from the 80’s and the keyboards and synthesizers play an important role on their music.

IMHO, the most enjoyable track from the album is “The Legend of Uncle Hamish” , a song with a Caribbean twist on which tin whistle, guitar and keyboards really match each other. “Fanfare for the Common Scotsman” is also an interesting tune, maybe the most Wolfstone-style song on the album. Apart from those, the opening track “Slante Mhath” and “Mr. Wotzit” are also worth hearing. On the other hand, “Paddy Green Emerald Shore” and “Jolly Beggermen” (sic) are not my cup of tea. I feel the former  too long and too slow and the keyboards too present on the latter.

Operators Are Standing By”  follows a Van Halen meets Seven Nations approach that can be appealing for a lot of Celtic rock fans. However, if you enjoy  bands like Prydein or MacKeel, probably you won’t find the same energy on this album.

Tracklist:

01. Slante Mhath 04:16
02. Jolly Beggerman 04:31
03. Paddys Green Emerald Shore 08:17
04. Mr. Wotzit 04:34
05. As Bullets Hit Sand 04:27
06. Fanfare For The Common Scotsman 05:38
07. The Legend Of Uncle Hamis 04:28

NEWS - RAMSHACKLE ARMY LOOKING FOR A BANJO/MANDOLIN PLAYER

Banjo & Mandolin Player parts ways with The Ramshackle Army.

It is with a heavy heart that The Ramshackle Army announce the first lineup change since the bands inception in 2010, as Banjo, Mandolin and Bouzouki player Loc Kibell has decided to part ways with the band. It has been a long, arduous but enjoyable as all hell time over the last two years. The band has played a seemingly endless string of shows thoughout Victoria, the East Coast of Australia and North America, but Loc has decided that it is time to close this chapter and move on to the next.

There is no seedy, hidden story behind this and Loc will play out the band’s run of festival and St Patrick’s Day shows before one final Melbourne hoorah, the details of which will follow.

What this means for The Ramshackle Army is that following the completion of this run, the band are going to take a breath and try to fill the shoes left by Loc. This break will allow the band to complete the writing of their debut album and come back with a new look, new sound and new horizons.

As much as it will be strange for the band to progress without a founding and integral member, sometimes forced change allows everyone to take stock and reassess the path down which they were heading.

The Ramshackle Army will support everything and anything our brother Loc does in the future, and we hope that all of you come out and show your support for him one more time.

If you or anyone you know are interested and joining Celtic punks The Ramshackle Army in the position of Banjo and Mandolin player, please feel free to drop a line to theramshacklearmy@gmail.com and the band will be only too happy to pass on some more details.

The Stanfields - Death & Taxes

Lyrics

Well you strutted in the place with a smirk on your face
To get a real big taste of the hustle and flow
Hustle and flow, hustle and flow
To get a big taste of the hustle and flow
You got a fly whip, the abs, the chicks
A real big stick and your head in the sand
Head in the sand, head in the sand
A real big stick and your head in the sand
Long black tie, bulletproof mojo
Laugh in the field and cry in the dojo
A look in your eye and a chip on your shoulder
Laughing at everyone on the...

CHORUS

Rows of names on a mailing list
Chosen game for the wall
From a lottery of the oversold and underpaid
Time for heads to roll

Slap on the wrist and a tsk tsk tsk
But you shared no risk in the penalty-oh
The penalty-oh, the penalty-oh
You shared no risk in the penalty-oh
You dotted the eyes, did it by the book
But you never found the hook and you never did solve it
Never did solve it, never did solve it
You never found the hook and you never did solve it
Credit, credit, credit, credit, credit crunch ho!
A notch on the belt and away you go
Self-made man and company soldier
Taking out everyone of the....

VIDEO - SMOKEY BASTARD

Smokey Bastard "Aspirations, I Have Some"

Lyrics:

Can we trade in these lives we lead?
'Cos baby you should see me in my dreams,
Fighting assassins off in bullet time
Spinning 360 degrees
'Cos all these movies got me thinking
Could I ever be like them?
Do you you think John McClane gets shy-cock taking a piss with other dudes?
Exactly, It's definitely no isn't it,
That's why he's John McClane.

I wanna wear a vest top for a living
And shoot guns out of cars while they're still spinning,
Go out and prove I'm hard down on the boulevard,
Shit on the reds just like Christopher Hitchens
And it's really got me thinking
Could I ever be like them?
Do you think Arnie lives in his parent's house and listens to the Gaslight Anthem?
Well, Buttons does. He says they're pretty good.

I wish that when I sang it sounded just like Springsteen,
That if I took the stand, that folks would sit and listen.
I wish that I was in a gang, grinding a living on the corners
Or the maverick on a cop show, busting heads and taking numbers
And I'd look like Jesse Custer and I'd throw down like him too,
Go chasing women like McNulty after a dozen shots or two
And if I wrote a breakdown that sounds like 'Racing in the Street'
Not a soul would ever notice, just think the song is pretty sweet.

A town where your tattoos glitter in the light.

And a town that truly has your heart beguiled.

REVIEW - FIRKIN "Keep on Firkin-Live in Budapest DVD" (2012)

Firkin "Keep on Firkin (live in Budapest)" Pump Jump Records PJR201202 2012
Release date: 28 December 2012
Running Time: 59:51, 18 Tracks

There are bands that release amazing albums but are unable to create the same atmosphere at their live shows. Fortunately, there are bands that issue awesome albums and they are even better on stage. Hungarian band Firkin is one of those bands. Following the spirit of the best Flogging Molly era, the lads (and girl) from Budapest  have one of the best discographies on this side of the pond. Traditional songs, FM covers, self-penned songs … you always get what you want.

Unfortunately, some of us have never enjoyed the band live. Although they have played outside Hungary, they have never visited our town. But we can buy the live DVD!!! OK, we cannot smell the sweat and feel the heat, but “Keep on Firkin” is the second best to a Firkin gig experience.

Eighteen tracks in one hour. All their hits sung both in English and Hungarian. The DVD shows Firkin at their best: two great vocalists (Barni and Pali), a great female fiddler and a kick-ass flutist. Their friends Jamie Winchester and István Pál Szalonna guest on Keyboards and fiddle.

Why should you buy the DVD instead of the mp3 version? Because cameras have been put among the audience, on the bass and on the flute. Because one can see how Barni tears his shirt and his jeans and how he begs when they are going to play “Beggarman”. Because … they are Firkin, and their music has a theatrical end that have to be watched.

Tracklist:

01 - Intro 4:19
02 - Borfohász 2:45
03 - Rocky Road to Dublin 2:10
04 - Vezet Majd a Szél 3:38

REVIEW - PADDY AND THE RATS "Tales from the Docks"

Paddy and The Rats "Tales from the Docks" Nordic Records
Release date: December 12,2012
Running time: 50:30, 15 tracks

Some bands get the so-called “difficult third album” disease. If anybody was wondering if Paddy and The Rats have got it too, the answer is easy after having given some spins to “Tales from the Docks”. The prolific Hungarian band is still pushing forward. They have not changed their style. If everything works, why should they change it? These guys have been delivering a bunch of catchy tunes so far and their third album is not an exception.

During 51 minutes Paddy and The Rats keep on offering more than the average band. Fifteen tracks and no clunker. If they had decided to release a single every month, they could have done it. And most of them have topped the charts. For instance, the opening track “Bastards Back Home” (featuring “Scotland the Brave”), the excellent number “Celebrate” (featuring “Itchy Fingers”) and “Let’s Go Johnny” (kick-ass punk-rock song: great accordion, Rancid style bass line, great guitar work, gang vocals …)

Those would be the most obvious choices. Nevertheless, they are not the only catchy songs.  “The Captain’s Dead” is another top-notch pirate number ; “Red River Prince” is folk-metal at its best; “Wasted Time” is another fantastic number with its Brian May tribute passage, and “Drunken Tuesday”  is a drinking song that has a ‘60s pop feeling with a great chorus and a Poguesish accordion playing. Let alone “I Always See You”, a ballad featuring piano and tin whistle.

I could listen to this album 24hours a day. And the feeling would be the same, a Ramones song “Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World”. Paddy and The Rats have already conquered the European Celtic punk “kingdom”. Watch out American guys! You are the next ones to be conquered.

Tracklist:

1. Bastards Back Home 3:20
2. The Edge of Life 2:47
3. The Captain's Dead 3:55
4. Clown 3:42
5. Wasted Time 3:55
6. Drunken Tuesday 2:55
7. Ghost from the Barrow 4:14
8. Celebrate 2:56
9. I Always See You 4:03
10. Red River Prince 3:33
11. Let's Go, Johnny! 3:02
12. Scums of the Seven Seas 2:48

ENTER THE HAGGIS - ALL THE NEWS ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM

(Info from the band's site and the band's mailout)

"Hi everyone. We know this looks like a lot of text to read, but hear us out:

Our new record "The Modest Revolution" is scheduled for release on March 30th.
It's the best album we've ever written. We think you'll agree.

We just can't wait anymore. March 30th is just too far away. We're as impatient as you are. Probably MORE impatient.

So without further ado, here's a free song:

When we say we're "releasing" it, we mean that in the most literal sense. It's free, downloadable and yours to share with anyone and everyone. After all, we recorded it with your money!

This is  the first of four such releases. You'll be getting a free song a week, every Monday in February. All four will be DRM-free, high-quality tracks. We encourage you to send them to every single person who you imagine might like them.

If you feel so inclined, there is one specific way you can help us out. It's not hard, and it'll only take a few minutes. We want to conscript all of you as our publicists for a coordinated blitz, to push our songs out into the world!

Each Monday, we humbly ask you to jump on your computer at exactly 6 pm Eastern and share the week's single with your friends, family, coworkers, online gaming buddies, knitting forums or WWE fan-fiction blogs. Anywhere you can think of that fans of music might gather online, post a link to our single or, better yet, embed the SoundCloud player for easy streaming and downloading! Pin it. Tweet it. Tumble it. The more places we can have the song shared at the same moment, the more likely we are to attract new ears.

Later each Monday evening (7 pm Eastern) we'll be hosting live Google Hangouts with special guests where you can come chat with us about the week's song or just share pictures of cats in funny costumes. We'll keep you updated on the number of plays and downloads the single is getting and we can all watch the numbers climb together!

With your help, and the help of music fans like you, our songs will be EVERYWHERE this February. This is the year of the Haggis, and it's going to be an exciting one.

Thanks for your time, your support and your unbelievable loyalty. Haggis Heads rule.

-ETH"

"Wanna listen to our whole new album?

Food. Refreshments. A start-to-finish listen through of "The Modest Revolution", complete with live commentary and a Q&A with all five members of the band, plus producer Zach McNees. All in the comfort of the beautiful Center For The Arts in Natick, MA..

ON ST. PATRICK'S DAY.

How can we sweeten this deal?

Oh, right. You also get a fresh-baked copy of the album, plus a copy of the newspaper which inspired it. All for $50.

This is an afternoon event, so it won't interfere with your St. Patrick's Day plans (should you have any). If you like, you can stick around for our show at the venue that night (show tickets are extra, sorry).

If you're interested, you can read all about it (and purchase tickets) here:

See you there!

(Oh, and don't forget - we're releasing a new FREE SINGLE on Monday afternoon!)"

REVIEW - THE ROYAL SPUDS "Start Your Engines" (2012)

The Royal Spuds "Start Your Engines"
Release date: 8 December 2012
Running time:23:19, 6 tracks (intro + 5 songs)

The Royal Spuds are a new band hailing from “the Lowlands of Holland”: Maarten van Vliet (lead vocals, banjo), Robin Janssens (guitar), Michael Silver (accordion, vocals), Dave Schrijvers (bass), Milan Bloom (lead guitar, vocals) and Mark De Jong (drums). “ Start your Engines” is their first release, a six track EP that was issued last December 2012.

All along the EP there is an excellent blend of electric guitar, accordion and banjo. The highlights would be “Morrison’s Warriors” and “Come on You Black and Tans”. The former, based on the well-known “Morrison’s Jig” is a  Finnegan’s Hell meets Dropkick Murphys number featuring an awesome guitar work. The latter is another powerful song with great accordion and a guitar solo.

The last track also shines out. “Malt In” is the anagram for “Tam Lin”, another standard tune on which the song is based. Once again, a rocking treatment with metal guitars and excellent accordion playing.

If you love Circle J and Scrum, be ready for The Royal Spuds.

Tracklist:

1 - Start Your Engines
2 - Morrison's Warriors
3 - Come Out Ye Black & Tans
4 - Last Call
5 - Finnegan's Wake
6 - Malt In

VIDEO - FLANNERY "The Epic Beer Song"

"Flannery is a celtic folk rock band with only one mission: creating a party that the audience will always remember. The band makes this happen with their music filled with Scottish, Celtic but also Irish influences. Flannery means flat land and is the perfect name for six chilly men, who want to entertain with raw but also snappy, melodious music.

The repetoire of Flannery is variable. Instrumental, folk, rock and even rap will be played by the band. They write the music and the lines themselves this makes the music unique.

Flannery was founded by bagpipe player Denny, who plays music with his brothers in the formation The Myles Brothers. The Celtic bagpipe rockband Flannery started as a project during a big festival in the Netherlands. The band was formed and poet/performer Koos van der Goot was asked to write the lines and to sing. This was a perfect and special combination."

Denny Myles - Bagpipes
Peter Heerema - Drums
Steven Prins - Guitar
Michiel Stelpstra - Bass
Sebastiaan Hidding - Violin, vocals
Koos van der Goot - Vocals

REVIEW: NOBODY KNOWS "FolKing Around" (2012)

Nobody Knows "FolKing Around" DVD + CD, SM0262011
Release date: 2012
Running time (CD): 65:44, 17 tracks

Nobody Nows is a German band whose albums have got rave reviews at Celtic-Rock and RockKultur. They are not beginners, since they are  celebrating their 12th anniversary now. Maximilian Heinrichs (keyboards, synthesizer, backing vocals), Rony Heckel (guitar, mandolin, backing vocals), Thor Klein (double bass, backing vocals), Georg Mart (fiddle, guitar, backing vocals), Max Heckel (guitar, banjo, fiddle, lead vocals) and Jule Seyer (drums, no longer in the band) play a sort of a paneuropean music: songs and tunes from Ireland, France, Germany or Russia. But this label is not really right, since they also play American numbers like “Ring of Fire” or “Ghost Riders” and Canadian tunes. In fact, they tag their style as “post modern federal republican folklore with north east European character and east occidental rhythmic”.

FolKing Around” has been released as a live CD and a live CD + live DVD. The songs are sung in different languages (French, English and German) and classical compositions are featured on some numbers (Brahms on “Katjuscha” and J.S. Bach on “Guter Rat”). The setlist is a well-balanced blend of standards and covers that are arranged in such a way that they fit each other. My faves are obviously the Celtic numbers on which Max plays banjo: “The Creel” (a song that was also recorded by another German band, Fiddler’s Green) and “Irisches Winterlied” (the keyboards sound like an accordion), together with the polkas on “Titanic” ( “Dennis Murphy’s / John Ryans’”), on which the piano adds that Canadian flavour à la Barra MacNeils.

Apart from those numbers, there are other interesting tracks. For instance “Ring of Fire”, “Katjuscha”,  their Pink Floyd rendition of “Wish You Were Here” and “Hans bleib da”, a German traditional song that features “Scotland the Brave” and the French Canadian reel “The Mouth of the Tobique” (excellent fiddling). BTW, on track no.2,  the fiddler also plays “Drowsy Maggie”.
FolKing Around” is an enjoyable album, even if I feel that there are too much covers. Nowadays I prefer original songs to covers. However,  if we take into account that "FolKing Around" is a live album, the mix of fun and musicianship is the right one.
