REVIEW - THE FENIANS "Take Me Home" (2013)

The Fenians "Take Me Home" Mizen Head Music (2013)
Release date: June 15, 2013
Running time: 46:15,12 tracks

The Fenians (together with The Young Dubliners and Tempest)  are the main exponents of the Californian Celtic rock scene prior to Flogging Molly. I have not paid too much attention to the band’s career: I got a couple of their albums (“Band of Rogues” and “Get Fun or Get Out”), I labeled them as a band focused on standards and covers and I lost track of them. So, when the band sent me their latest release I decided to forget about my previous opinion and listen carefully to “Take Me Back”. And I have to admit that I have really enjoyed this album.

The album starts with “On the Road to Ballyhack”, a catchy song featuring kick-ass tin whistle by Tardu Yergin and mandolin by the band’s leader Terry Casey.

Banshee Under My Bed”is the single on the album. It’s an infectious song that you’ll be whistling all the day.

Leave Her Johnny Leave Her” is a song that has already been covered by the likes of The Whisky Priests. The Fenians’ rendition is really amazing. The beginning is acoustic, and then it gets a ska treatment.

Take Me Home” is another strong number, featuring keyboards, electric guitar and a Paperboys sounding tin whistle.

Accordion can be heard on “Token Wake Song”,  an interesting track .

Show Me The Way” is not so energetic as other songs on the album, but it could be the perfect second single of the album. A Celtic pop number à la Ceili Rain.

Their cover of the shanty “Ruben Ranzo” is based on percussion and vocals. In fact, in sounds like an African number .

Finally “Come Out of the Grain” could be filed together with  O’Tasty CDs.

The Fenians Take Me Home” is a lively CD that will be loved mainly by The Elders and Ceili Rain fans.

REVIEW - THE DANGLEBERRIES "Nae Sleep Tae Regent Street" (2009)

The Dangleberries "Nae Sleep Tae Regent Street" DANG002
Release date: August 1, 2009
Running time: 40:15, 11 tracks

“Nae Sleep Tae Regent Street” is the second album released by The Dangleberries. These guys and girls define their music as Galloway Pipe Rock. In fact, the band that recorded this album consisted of 12 members, including four pipers and six percussionists.

The album is a well balance of originals (6 instrumentals, the odd-numbered tracks) and 5 covers (one of them a Robbie Burns song). My faves are the original tunes: “The Screamin’ Yab Dabs”, “The Meltit Wellie”, “Too Boozy” and “Nae Sleep Ta Regent Street”. All these tracks follow a similar approach to that of the French band Black Label Zone first and second albums: awesome pipes instrumental music with an Old Blind Dogs twist on percussion.

Regarding the covers, the highlights would be their Bonney M medley “Daddy Cool/Rasputin” and their rendition of “A Man’s a Man fur A’That” with that “I Fought The Law” intro.

Nae Sleep Tae Regent Street” is a fine album, the perfect  CD to become acquainted with this pipe band music. And, given that the band has recently released their third album, to get both of them together would be a good purchase.

Tracklist:

01. The Screamin' Yab Dabs 3:18
02. Take Yer Mamma Oot 5:07
03. A Moose Of Two An' A Big Caribou 3:48
04. New Shin 3:19
05. Nae Sleep Tae Regent Street    3:23
06. Daddy Cool:Rasputin 4:19
07. Too Boozy 3:55
08. A Man's A Man Fur A' That 3:11
09. Seth's Manky Pan 3:17
10. Valerie 4:17
11. The Meltit Wellie 2:17

THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY BEGIN TRACKING DEBUT ALBUM

It is with great excitement that Melbourne Australia’s Celtic punks The Ramshackle Army announce they have entered the studio to begin tracking what will be their debut full length album.

Since the release of their last recording, 2011’s independent EP “Life Lessons and Drunken Sessions”, the band have toured extensively up the East Coast of Australia and over to the US.  Long overdue for a new release, the band feel they have assembled a list of songs equal parts diverse and decisively representative of The RSA.

2013 has been full of ups and downs for the RSA camp, with successful trips to Port Fairy Folk Festival and a St Patricks Day run, but also with the departure of founding member and banjo/mandolin player Loc Kibell.  Now once again whole, after the addition of Josh Aveling, the band are excited to embark on the next chapter of their journey.

The album to be entitled “Letters From The Road Less Travelled” will contain a list of tracks inspired by local Australian tales, the band’s own road experiences, and current societal events.  Sounds from the album draw inspiration from the same Celtic and Folk genres which have flowed through previous recordings, but with a noticeably more punk rock base identified by loud sing-alongs and big harmonies.

The release is being tracked at Head Gap Studios in Preston, Victoria, with Loki Lockwood who’s impressive list of references includes work with Spiderbait, Digger & the Pussycats, Graveyard Train, Brothers Grim and The Drones.

The album will be preceded by the release of the first single in November 2013, with the band keen to bring its new sound, new vibe and new party to audiences. The band will be providing regular studio updates, photos and videos via their Facebook (www.facebook.com/theramshacklearmy) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/ramshacklearmy) pages.

Stayed tuned for release and tour details.

The RSA are open to discussion regarding the distribution of the forthcoming release, particularly to Europe and the US markets where a fanbase already exists and for which the availability of physical copies is important for growth, which will be further supported by future touring.

BASTARDS ON PARADE ON TOUR

Bastards On Parade second album "Empty Bottles and Broken Things", will be out next August 30th.

The band will be touring Europe soon, the first dates can be found on the pic.

IRISH MOUTARDE REVEALS ARTWORK AND RELEASE DATE FOR RAISE ‘EM ALL

Irish Moutarde, celtic rock band from Quebec City, Canada, just revealed the front cover of their debut album "Raise ‘Em All", which will be available worldwide on September 17th.

"Electric guitars, bagpipe and whisky: Celtic rock as it should be"

Add to this banjo, accordion and tin whistle, and this statement sums up well Irish Moutarde’s debut album "Raise 'Em All". This album is a twelve songs party that perfectly blends together rock, punk, Celtic music, even metal! These musical styles are omnipresent, and the mix leads to heavy and rapid pieces or lively and bawdy Irish drinking songs. That's not to say that the guys (Oops! The lads and the lass!) can't turn it down a bit. There’re also some introspective and sweet moments, but not too much! Dynamic vocals, lots of melodies of Celtic influence and many known and lesser-known instruments make a debut album full of energy that fulfills Irish Moutarde's promise that no matter the day you’ll listen to the album, it’ll always be St.Patrick's Day!

Tracklist

01 - The Black Mill
02 - Farewell to Drunkenness
03 - The Cabin
04 - I Heard Jesus Was
05 - Glasses to the Sky

07 - LLL
08 - D.O.E.
09 - The Fields of Athenry

VIDEO - THE ROUGHNECK RIOT "MILLION MILES"

The Roughneck Riot have got a new video.

The Roughneck Riot "Million Miles"

Lyrics :

3am on Sunday morning, blinded by the rain
On a mega bottle ride from Aberdeen
100 miles from anywhere that I would rather be.
The thought of Babylon is our gasoline.

We ain't hurting anyone we ain't here to take control.
We're not Irish punks - we've never even been.
And we don't come from anywhere so you don't need to know
Our story lives and dies within our scene

We've come a million miles
We've almost made it nowhere

We're hated till we've proven
That we're in this for our kicks
Without the faintest idea how we got this far
And we will always rise above your dirty fuckin tricks
It's the people that made us who we are

We've come a million miles
We've almost made it nowhere
A million miles away from home

REVIEW - GORD TAYLOR "Gord Taylor Featuring Patrick Kaczor-Santos" (2013)

Gord Taylor featuring Patrick Kaczor-Santos, The Sherbrook Music Company
Release date: July 1st (Canada Day), 2013
Running time: 21:45, 9 + 1 tracks

As you know, Gord Taylor is the guy who played the pipes on the latest Real McKenzies album “Westwinds”. Gord was an old friend of Matt McNasty and he was the RMcK part-time bagpipes technician, composer and part-time member till he became RMcK’s piper in 2009. Gord left the McKenzies at the beginning of 2012 when they were touring Europe. His departure remains a sort of a mistery, one of the best-kept Celtic punk secrets. If you are expecting to read why they parted ways, you’re wrong. This is a write-up about Gord Taylor’s debut album. And it's a hell of an album.

Gord contacted his mate Patrick Kaczor-Santos (drums, vocals) and, together with some friends (Dale Brown on fiddle, Vaughan Poyser on bass, Roland Reid on the snare drum and Kylie Kuehl on background vocals), they recorded this 10 track mini-album. A kick-ass CD that has been defined as Canadian hard-folk with punk attitude.

The Question (With Capital Q): is this another Scottish bagpipes punk album? Nope. Maybe the album is a collection of songs on which the RMcK influence can be heard, but this is more than a bagpipes album. Obviously, the intro ("Barnburner no. 1") and the outro ("Barnburner no. 2)" will be appreciated by the average RMcK fan. Both of them are instrumental numbers featuring awesome pipes together with fantastic electric guitar work and traditional sounding snare drum. But there are also another songs  that wouldn’t fit on a bagpipes punk album and  are essential on this CD. For instance, the tribute to “Tommy Prince”, a II World War hero from Winnipeg (yes, there are pipes on this), or “Orkney Anthem”. If the former is an original composition, the latter is a cover of and old Ivan Drever song. Ivan is an Scottish musical treasure. He began as a songwriter before joining  Scottish bagpipes rockers Wolfstone.  And this is the most Scottish material on this essentially Canadian album.

The other cover on Gord Taylor’s debut album is the Canadian standard “Red River Valley”. There is a Patrick’s solo, outstanding fiddle by Dale and great Gord’s vocals on this rendition. “Upon a Motorbike” is a contemporary Canadian folk song. It has the RMcK twist, but no pipes are featured on this fecking song. However “Poster Boy” and “AW Canada”, a couple of RMcK/Farler’s Fury sounding tracks, do have pipes on them and are some of the album hottest moments.

Finally, even if it’s not listed, there is a track no. 10, a guitar led  punk number titled “Sick of It All

Is “Gord Taylor featuring Patrick Kaczor-Santos” a recommendable album? Sure. I would dare to say that it’s an essential album for any Celtic punk/rock that is looking for bands/artists that are not prisoners of the basic Celtic punk. If you are one of these fans that have enjoyed the gems that the scene has delivered in 2012-2013 (SIR REG third album, Hoist the Colors second album, Lexington Field second album …) you should absolutely own this because of the musicianship, passion and fun.

Tracklist:

01 - Barnburner I 1:12
02 - Upon a Motorbike 1:58
03 - Poster Boy 2:02
04 - Red River Valley 3:02
05 - Aw Canada 2:12
06 - The Okney Anthem 2:38
07 - Two Tanks of Fuel 2:28
08 - Tommy Prince 2:54
