ROIO - LES NEGRESSES VERTES Live in Vienna 1990

Les Négresses Vertes were an interesting French band from the late eighties/early nineties. This show was broadcasted by an Austrian FM station, so the quality is very good.

(From Wikipedia) Les Négresses Vertes, formed in 1987, is a French music group that is best described as a fusion of world music and some aspects of alternative rock. Their tracks often feature acoustic guitar and accordion, as well as some tracks containing many other 'traditional' instruments such as piano and brass. Their style is fairly upbeat and energetic on the majority of their tracks, with unusual rhythms, vocals delivered with a generous dose of zeal and vibrant energy, and accompaniment melodies ranging from lilting and distant to eccentric and fast-paced. These two factors give many of their pieces a strong sense of direction.

History

Formed in 1987, Les Négresses Vertes arose from the alternative music scene in Paris. The original line-up included singer Helno (also known as Helno Rota de Lourcqua, born Noël Rota in Paris, December 25, 1963 - January 22, 1993), Jo Roz (also known as l'Ami Ro; real name Joe Ruffier des Aimes) (piano), Stéfane Mellino (guitar), Jean-Marie Paulus (bass), Gaby (drums), Matthias Canavese (accordion), Michel Ochowiak (trumpet), Abraham Sirinix (also known as Abraham Braham) (trombone) and Iza Mellino (backing vocals).

The original members were a group of friends, many of whom had not played their instruments before forming the band. The group's name translates as "green negresses"; it arose from abuse hurled at them at one of their first concerts. The insult is a comparison to the kitsch art of Vladimir Tretchikoff. They were initially signed to the independent Off The Track label, and released the punk protest song "200 Ans D'Hypocrisie" in response to their country's French Revolution bicentennial celebrations.

In 1989 they released their first album, Mlah, to good reviews in both France and the UK, where the single "Zobi La Mouche" just failed to reach the charts and where they toured and played the WOMAD festival. They also made a controversial tour of Lebanon. Their second album, Famille Nombreuse, in 1991, featured new drummer Zé Verbalito.

In 1990, Les Négresses Vertes contributed the song "I love Paris" to the Cole Porter tribute album "Red Hot + Blue" produced by the Red Hot Organization.

Helno was by this time struggling with serious heroin addiction, and Stéfane Mellino and Canavese replaced him as the main songwriters. Helno died at his parents' house on January 22, 1993.

Several members left the band after Helno's death, but Les Négresses Vertes continued around the nucleus of Mellino, Canavese, Ochowiak and Paulus. In 1995 they released the album Zig-Zague, followed by the live album Green Bus. By 2000's Trabendo, the group's style had shifted to a dub oriented lounge style.

REVIEW - THE LANGER'S BALL "The Devil or the Barrel" (2012)

The Langer's Ball "The Devil of the Barrel"
Release date: August 2012
Running time: 43:53, 13 tracks

Originally a duo (Hannah Rediske on accordion and pennywhistle and Michael Sturm on guitar, mandolin and lead vocals), the band from Minnesota has grown on every recording.  All of their albums have been critically acclaimed, particularly their amazing live album “Drunk, Sick and Tired” from 2011. The band seemed to have reached their peak with a full “electric” line-up. However, the live album was only the first milestone on their evolution.

Joined by Derek Jaimes on drums (ex-Wild Colonial Bhoys), Drew Miller on bass (Boiled in Lead) and Trevor Jurgens on electric guitar, The Langer’s Ball have just released their best work to date. And I say to date, because I’m sure that they will issue more albums with more original material. “The Devil or The Barrel” has 13 tracks and even if I find that their covers are really appealing, I’m really impressed with Michael Sturm’s own songs.

Just listen to tracks like the punkabilly “Whiskey Chaser” (a catchy song featuring banjo, accordion and tin whistle), “Kick Around”  (a perfectly performed song: acoustic guitar at the beginning then the accordion enters and finally all the band joins, specially an awesome electric guitar), the fans and critics favourite “One More” (an accordion sound that links them to the German band Across the Border ) and “MacKey’s Daughter” (a Mahones influenced song featuring “If I Had Maggie in the Woods”)

As far as the covers are concerned, “Johhny is a Roving Blade” is another great track with that old Mahones sound (Hannah’s tin whistle kicks ass!) featuring the tune to "The Grand Aul' Dame Britannia" and “The Haughs of Cromdale”; “Rye Whiskey” is a more American number with a great banjo and guitar work and  “Mountain Dew” is a live number (probably one of the best renditions together with that of The Pogues and The Dubliners and that of Paddy Goes to Holyhead on their first live CD).

Some people would feel that “I Know My Love”  is a song to be avoided, since it was recorded by The Chieftains together with The Corrs, but the track is worth being recorded an The Langer’s Ball version is very interesting. The other songs that have been recorded a million times are “The Fields of Athenry” , “All for me Grog” and  “The Wild Rover”. IMHO, the first song was not necessary. However, “All for Me Grog” is really a top-notch version. They have followed an approach similar to Lexington Field and have re-built the song and added the “Cooley’s” reel. The same can be said for “The Wild Rover”. In fact, it’s not the Wild Rover, but the ”Wild Rover Polka”. “The Wild Rover” have been  merged with “The Beer Barrel Polka” and funny German  lyrics have been written: Ein, zwei, drei, vier. I’ve been the Wild Rover for manys the  year…. I went to a Bierstube I used to frequent, I told the young Fräulein me money’s all  spent. I asked her for credit but she answered me NEIN…. (even Deutsche Marks are mentioned!!!)

Nobody knows which is the right way to become a successful and interesting Celtic punk/rock band. But if you ask this to Hannah and Michael, that’s what they will tell you:  a love and respect  for the ballads and the traditional tunes, to be open-minded, to play a lot of gigs eveywhere (taverns, pubs, festivals …) and to meet the right partners with a long experience on both folk and rock music and tell them to become a part of your project. For them, this has really paid.

01 - Whiskey Chaser 2:59
02 - I Know My Love 3:25
03 - Johnny Jump Up 3:38
04 - Rye Whiskey 2:40

REVIEW - DELILAH'S REVENGE - Demo (2012)

Delilah's Revenge - s/t demo
Release date: January 2012
Running time: 15:00, 5 tracks

I feel that a new wave of Celtic rock bands is coming from the USA. Everything began with Lexington Field, the band from San Diego. They coined the term “American Fiddle Rock”. The idea is clear: music merging American and Celtic traditions with a (punk) rock attitude on which the fiddle plays the major role.

If I’m talking about a wave, this involves that there are more bands under this label. Some of  them would be Callanach and , obviously, Delilah’s Revenge, an intelligent band from Boulder, Colorado, that was our band of the month in July.

At the end of 2011 they recorded a 5 track demo that was available at the beginning of 2012. A well recorded demo with a wonderful artwork. The CD was produced by Nick Ryan, who also played bass on the 5 tracks, and has all the things a demo must have: 3 self-penned songs, a set of tunes and a real cover.

The 3 originals are “Our Separate Ways”, “One Thousand Miles from Home”  and “The Shoreman’s Lament”.  There are some Flogging Molly influences on the first two tracks, at least vocally, with amazing fiddling, and the third track is a catchy number that links Delilah’s Revenge to Lexington Field.

The traditional set consists of the well-known fiddle standards Tam Lin and Catharsis. Delilah’s Revenge version adds something new: fiddle and cello and the right dose of drums.

Finally, Delilah’s Revenge covers a song by the Rolling Stones, “Paint it Black”. A great instrumental version on which the band is really tight.  A different approach, close to a band like The Crooked Fiddle Band.

Delilah’s Revenge was the support band for Lexington Field last August 4th 2012 at Scruffy Murphy’s in Denver. Hats-off to Beau and company for choosing  the best support band for that show.

Tracklist:

1 - Our Separate Ways (Lyrics: J.Lancaster. Music: Delilah's Revenge) 2:39
2 - Tam Lin / Catharsis (trad. arr. by K. Lauffer) 3:00
3 - One Thousand Miles from Home 3:45
4 - The Shoreman's Lament (Lyrics: D.Sheehan. Music: Delilah's Revenge)  2:37
5 - Paint it Black (Written by The Rolling Stones. Arr. by K.Lauffer) 2:55
