REVIEW - A BAND OF ROGUES Self-titled album (2012)

A Band of Rogues - "s/t" (2012)
Release date:June 23rd, 2012
Running time: 48:56, 10 tracks

Imagine a band with two faces:

A) American Irish rock with Christy Moore and Van Morrison influences.
B) Acoustic traditional band to be filed together with the likes of Lunasa, Dervish, Danú, etc.

If you think that this is not possible, then you’re wrong. A Band of Rogues have been able to have the cake and eat it!

The seven piece band from NYC has released a superb self-titled album. Two sets of tunes, a Christy Moore cover (“Ordinary Man”) and seven songs written by different band members: Sean McNally (vocals/guitar), Tom Burns (accordion/vocals/guitar), Frank Banafato (lead guitar/banjo/mandolin) and Joe O’Brien (piano/keyboards).

The opening track  “Molly, Molly” is an interesting Celtic rock number featuring great fiddle, accordion and mandolin. A song that links A Band of Rogues to other US acts like Wild Colonial Bhoys or O’Tasty.

The Girl from the Emerald Island” is a different kind of song influenced by Van Morrison. The whole band sounds really tight on this track that features “The Foxhunter’s Reel”.

After listening to this track, it’s obvious that A Band of Rogues know how to play the traditional repertoire. But one is really amazed after listening to the next track, the kick-ass set of jigs “The Timmy Clifford Set”. The approach is acoustic, but you don’t notice a lack of continuity on the album flow. Quite the contrary, it fits perfectly well.

The next two tracks are the “tribute” to Christy Moore. “You Can’t Eat the Scenery” features the electric guitar sound that you can hear on albums such as “Unfinished Revolution” or “Voyage”. And “Ordinary Man” gets the A Band Of Rogues treatment: excellent fiddle, keyboards, bass and guitar.

The following number is another top-notch set of tunes titled “Punch”. Hats-off to Meredith Rachel on fiddle! If you like Nollaig Casey and Arty McGlynn albums you’ll love this set.

Finally, to proof that they are not stuck in the past, A Band of Rogues deliver a catchy rocking number with some Eastern Europe influences. Maybe they like The Dreadnoughts too. This time the reel that is featured is “Gravel Walk”.

Unfortunately, many young bands tend to focus only on the same standards and The Dubliners/The Pogues “heritage” and neglect the traditional tunes and other bands. A Band of Rogues have made a fantastic job blending different visions of the Celtic music world on this awesome album. So, if you want to open your musical horizon, check it out.

P.S. Please boys, record "Musha God Help Her" on the next album.

REVIEW - THE ROUGHNECK RIOT "This is Our Day" (2012)

The Roughneck Riot "This is Our Day" Bomber Music UXB012
Release date: July 16th, 2012
Running time: 38h00, 12 tracks

Amazing album! Unexpected? Not at all. The Roughneck Riot shift towards a different end was already clear on “Same Again Tomorrow”, their 4 track EP released last year (Remember, you vote for them and they reached no. 6 at the best of 2011 EP list). Together with three songs from that EP,“This is Our Day”, “Same Again Tomorrow” and “Down and Out  (a.k.a. Gun in Your Back)“, the guys from Warrington have recorded 9 new tracks. Twelve great tracks in 38 minutes.

The Roughneck Riot are together with Smokey Bastard the main exponents of the folk-punk made in England. So it’s not a surprise that both of them have released their second album with Bomber Music. In fact, one could say that both bands are following a parallel career. Of course, their sound is different, but they have drawn the same conclusion after having issued a self-released album: if you want to succeed in the folk-punk jungle, then you have to find your own way. Smokey Bastard decided to remove the Celtic-ism from their music and released a top-notch album. Now The Roughneck Riot have decided to get free from The Mahones/The Pogues’ influences on their songs and have issued a kick-ass album.

As all the fans have already downloaded “Ignorance is Easy” or have watched the video for that song, I will not talk about it. But I will tell that the beginning of the album is perfect with that Clash-y song, “This is Our Day” and a number that can seem a little bit dark, but is one of my faves, “Just Because”. I guess that track no. 6, “What About Us” could have been written after having toured with The Real McKenzies. It’s a fantastic Californian punk number, the sort of song that you can hear on the Drink Hunters debut album. “No Sense of Human” is a great punk-pop song à la Green Day. “Same Again Tomorrow” is the bastard son of Neck and The Electrics. And “Down & Out” is always on my head. I don’t know why but when I listen to this song I remember Midnight Oil.

If you think that a folk-punk band always need a fiddler or a tin whistle player, believe me, when you listen to The Roughneck Riot, you don’t miss those instruments. Banjo, mandolin, accordion and the electric instruments are enough when a huge amount of energy is added. “This is Our Day” is a mature effort, but, fortunately, the four boys and two girls from Warrington are delivering a young, fresh and catchy folk-punk album.

Track listing:

01 - Ignorance Is Easy 2:51
02 - This Is Our Day 3:23
03 - Just Because 3:29
04 - Waiting to Die 4:04
05 - Pissin in the Wind 3:27
06 - What About Us? 2:34

09 - No Sense of Human 1:52
10 - Same Again Tomorrow 3:00

REVIEW - ZEPTEPI "Winter in the Blood" (2012)

Zeptepi "Winter in the Blood" Probe One Music POM-7 (2012)
Release date:  March 21st,2012
Running time: 40:02, 12 tracks

Zeptepi is a five-piece folk rock band from Melbourne, Australia. “Winter in the Blood”  is their 4th album and it was intended to be an acoustic EP. However, it turned out to be a 12 track CD. The vast majority of the tracks feature vocals, guitar and/or mandolin (Phil Dean, 11 tracks), banjo (CC Thornley, 10 tracks) and fiddle (Hayley Anderson, 8 tracks). The drummer (Bernie Dodd)  plays different kinds of percussion on 6 tracks and the bassist  (Frank Packer) only plays on one track.

The spirit of The Dubliners can be found all over the album. Not only is there a song about Luke Kelly (the interesting opening track “King of the Balladeers”), but Zeptepi have recorded some material that The Dubliners had previously recorded: the instrumental set “Fairmoye Lassies/Sporting Paddy” and Ewan MacColl’s “School Day’s Over”.

IMHO, the self-penned songs are more calm than the covers. So, together with the original “I Stand Enthralled”, that features a great fiddling, and "The King of the Balladeers", my faves are some of the covers: “The Girls of Old Maui” (with new lyrics), Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades” (probably the gem on the album), “Fairmoye Lassies/Sporting Paddy” and track no. 12, the banjo solo “Wallaby Stew”.

Tracklist:

01. King of the Balladeers (Phil Dean) 4:00
02. Winter in my Blood (Phil Dean) 4:38
03. Girls of Old Maui (Trad./new words and arr. Phil Dean) 3:14
04. Ace of Spades (Kilmister/Taylor/Clarke)3:26
05. The Last Voyage (Phil Dean/CC Thornley) 4:11
06. Arrows (Phil Dean) 3:30
07. Fairmoye Lassies & Sporting Paddy (Trad.) 2:03
08. No Respect  (Phil Dean) 2:50
09. Peat Bog Soldiers (trad./Arr. Phil Dean) 4:00
10. I Stand Enthralled (Phil Dean) 3:38
11. School Days Over (Ewan MacColl) 3:11
12. Wallaby Stew (Trad./Arr. CC Thornley) 1:14

FREE DOWNLOADS - BLACK BONES discography

"Black Bones where born in 2005 rising from the ashes of AJ’s former band the Bloodline, and delivering a harsh punk rock ‘n’ roll style music. They released their first work – Prophecies of Apocalypse.

In 2008 the band drastically changed style, keeping the punk and rock ‘n’ roll roots, but mixing it up with folk and metal, writing a whole new LP called – Pirates of the Coast, a concept album that tells the tales of pirates and their fight to be eternally free and proud.

After two and a half years of touring with the pirate inspired show, the band decided to work on a new record, but it was obvious that they couldn’t just remain pirates, art is in motion and something new will soon arrive, but for now, enjoy the free download of their past works!"

REVIEW - TO THE LAST DROP "Demo" (2012)

To the Last Drop - Demo
Release date: July 2012
Running time: 13:30, 4 tracks

Recently I ended the review of the Rijsel Irish Boy’Z with the title of a Chieftains album, “The Year of the French”. And it’s really the year of the French Celtic punk/rock scene. Plenty of different bands playing different music. There is a top-notch Celtic rock band featuring bagpipes hailing from France, Celkilt. But there were no bands blending punk and pipes in a fresh and young way. And this gap has been filled by To The Last Drop.

To the Last Drop is a new 6 piece band from Paris whose singer, Seb, is also a member of the folk-punk duo Lords of the Pints. It’s a young band with an awesome sound and the right approach. I mean, it would have been easy to copy DKM, but the guys from the City of Light are closer to Farler’s Fury and Pipes and Pints. As their motto says, "We play bagpipes but we're not from Scotland"

The four tracks have been mixed in Australia, so, even if it’s a demo, you can see that To The Last Drop are really paying attention to every small detail. All of the songs are really enjoyable, but my faves are the first track and the last track. “We’ve Got a Band” is a catchy number with firing pipes and great drumming. “Lost in the Highlands” is amazing, a pipe arrangement in the Scottish traditional vein, superb vocals even with the effects, rhythm section à la Rancid

The other tracks are excellent too. “Red Widow” is maybe the closest to a DKM song. Great backing vocals in a sing-along song with two vocalists. And “Black Pearls of Newcastle” is also a melodic punk song with more fantastic backing vocals.

2012, a good year for French Celtic punk/rock music, but also for the European bagpipes punk scene. Heavyweights like Black Tartan Clan are back and newcomers like Czech band Curlies and French band To The Last Drop are the evidence that there is enough room for more bands loving the Real McKenzies attitude .

Tracklist:

1 - We've Got a Band 3:03
2 - Red Widow 3:22
3 - Black Pearls of Newcastle 3:24
4 - Lost in the Highlands 3:35

REVIEW - THE BLACK TARTAN CLAN "Standing Strong" (2012)

The Black Tartan Clan "Standing Strong" 4Subculture Records (2012)
Release date: July  2012
Running time: 4 tracks

The Loyal Men are back. And they are really loyal to the new tradition, a recording every two years. After an album in 2008 and a double album in 2012, The Black Tartan Clan have just released a 4 track EP. The road from “The Loyal Men” 2 CD to the “Standing Strong” EP has not been easy due to the line-up changes. Vocalist MacLoud left the band and guitarist MacTouche shifted to vocal duties. A new drummer (MacAël), a new guitar player (MacMarsh) and a bigger role for the sixth member MacHoze Jr., who is playing now snare, djembé, bouzouki and banjo.

The title of the EP is clear enough. The Black Tartan Clan are standing strong. If they had chosen “Standing Stronger”, maybe they would have been more accurate. Since this 4 track EP is a killer. Four top-notch songs and the band tighter than ever. The sound is brilliant, powerful, well balanced. No weakness is shown.

From the opening track “Standing Strong” to the closing track “No Stress” there is no rest. Yes, there is no slow numbers and BTC do exactly what they are expected to do. Great bagpipes punk with lyrics about friendship, pride, Braveheart…

The first track is a fantastic song with an excellent rhythm section, guitar and pipes and an interesting banjo arrangement at the end.

The next track, “Don’t Walk Alone” is also a hit. Amazing street punk with a slight Die Toten Hosen twist. A real anthem, like the next song, the epic “Finally Free”. A song about William Wallace. BTC shouting for the independence of Scotland. Just listen to that Scottish percussion on this track.

And to finish up, another awesome oi! song, “No Stress”. A cross between Dropkick Murphys and Sham 69. When you listen to the end of the song, you are sure that the band have really enjoyed the recording of the EP.

Which is the best European bagpipes punk band? Pipes & Pints? Bastards on Parade? The Black Tartan Clan? I don’t know, all of them are a  real alternative to Dropckick Murphys. But, at least, I can say that “Standing Strong” is the best Celtic punk EP of 2012. You were right, Steven ;-)

Track list:

1 - Standing Strong 3:32
2 - Don't Walk Alone 3:00
3 - Finally Free 3:31
4 - No Stress 3:20

FREE DOWNLOAD - BARBARIAN PIPE BAND "Sacra Losna" (2004)

"The Barbarian Pipe Band is active since 2001, and originates from the lands in the shade of the western Alps, a place called Bugella Civitas, (the present Biella- Piemonte - Italy). For many years now the band has been terrorising surrounding popular folk, whom for a very long time, have been dedicated to agriculture and sheep rearing. This group of hunter-gatherers, let alone musicians, is formed of three bagpipes and two drums able to summon the thunder in Earth, namely Taranis, their patron and great God of the storms. As powerful as the voice of Taranis is, so is their music. Their repertoire branches out from traditional Portuguese, French, Scottish, German, Breton and Piedmont pieces to songs of their own creation. They conduct a semi nomadic lifestyle, seasoningly abandoning their land to roam the entire Italic territory, and often crossing the imposing Alpine walls so to satisfy their inexhaustible thirst for adventure.

The Barbarian Pipe Band is composed by five musicians. They’re three pipers and two drummers. REVIEW - THE RIJSEL IRISH BOY'Z "Demo" (2012

The Rijsel Irish Boy'Z - Demo
Release date: 2012
Running time: 25:07, 7 tracks

The Rijsel Irish Boy’Z  were featured on our first sampler of 2012. The band hails from Lille (Rijsel in “French Flemish” language) and was born in 2009 as a side project when Les Carottes Râpées members Mikee and JP realized that both of them loved Celtic punk. Then, multi-instrumentalist Alain jumped in to add the traditional element to the RIBZ’s sound. However, they had to wait till the end of 2011 to become a serious project, when drummer Flo joined the band.

When I got the CD, Mikee told me that the demo have been recorded at home and it had not been mastered. So I was really surprised when I listened to the songs. Yes, it is a raw and no frills recording, rough at the edges, but the quality was far better than many official albums !!!

Another thought came to my mind. Three out of the seven tracks are available at Reverbnation: two free downloads (“Walkin’ Away” and “Drunken Sailor”), and one in streaming (“The Letter”). Are those really the best tracks? Maybe not. I feel that  the Bloody Irish Boys infused song “The Letter” is one of the highlights on the demo, a top-notch Celtic punk song featuring great mandolin an fiddle. So, it's an obvious choice. But I should have chosen another tracks instead of the others to whet the fans appetites, since the demo is full of strong material.

For instance, “Gloo …”, a fantastic number: aggressive vocals, tin whistle … a sort of a Fisticuffs song. Or even “I Don’t Wanna Die”, another fast-paced catchy track that I have really enjoyed. Let alone song no. 2, “Dr. Chickenstein”. Celtic punk goes horror punk. The likes of Blood or Whiskey and Sir Reg have toured with horror punk legends The Misfits. I would like that  they chose The Rijsel Irish Boy’z as support act the next time they’ll tour Europe.

I have read that the RIBZ have already written the 15 songs for their debut album. Stay tuned!

The French Celtic punk/Celtic rock/folk punk scene is becoming more and more appealing: The Booze, Celkilt, The Moorings, The Maggie Whackers, Saints & Sinners, Lords of the Pint and now Celtic punk-rockers The Rijsel Irish Boys. 2012: The Year of The French.

Tracklist:

1 - The Letter
2 - Dr. Chickenstein
3 - Walkin' Away 3:29
4 - Gloo ...
5 - I Don't Wanna Die
6 - Drunk
7 - Drunken Sailor (akoustik) 3:58

REVIEW - THE LOGUES "Tough at the Bottom" LGS001 (2011)

The Logues "Tough at the Bottom" LGS001 (2011)
Release date: July 15th, 2011
Running time: 42:13, 11 tracks

The Logues is a five piece band from Co. Tyrone. The band is fronted by Justin Logue (Vocals, tin whistle) hence the name. His band mates are Kiel Cathers (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica), Christophe Speer (tenor banjo, mandolin, guitars, accordion), Christopher Darragh (bass) and Darrell Belson (drums).

Tough at the Bottom”, their debut album, is a nice bunch of songs about booze. Then , it’s obvious that The Logues have their roots on the Irish balladeers (The Dubliners among others) and the great Christy Moore. However, influences from artist like the Waterboys or Bob Geldof can be heard on tracks such as “Jimmy Lassie” or “Broomstock Boogie”.

The banjo and the mandolin from Christophe Speer  play the main role on the band’s sound and sometimes they are backed by the tin whistle (“Price of a Pint”, “Misty Morning Night”).

The catchiest songs on the album would be the opening track “Price of a Pint” (the most Celtic punk track on “Tough at the Bottom”) and “Poitin Valley” (great banjo and mandolin). Other interesting numbers are “Ballad of John Barleycorn” (if you love Shane MacGowan’s “More Pricks than Kicks”, this song has the same music), “Music of the Night” (a sort of a stop-and-go song; it goes calm and then the banjo and the bass speed up the beat), “Tales of the Road” (the song is sung a capella and then the banjo joins; this track features “Maidrin Rua”), “Misty Morning Night” (a Goats Don’t Shave sounding song) and “Broomstick Boogie”  (a song that could be filed together with “The Great Song of Indifference")

For Celtic punk fans, let’s say that in a scale from 1 point (Saw Doctors) to 10 points (Blood or Whiskey), The Logues would get 6,5 points. They are neither raucous, nor polished.  Music from the heart or from the liver? I guess that the best description of The Logues music would be the lyrics of the song "Irish Ways" from the LILT album. Grab a pint and dance to their songs.

Tracklist:

1. Price of a Pint 2:35
2. Jimmy Lassie 3:16
3. No Place Like Home 3:52
4. Broomstick Boogie 4:17
5. Ballad of John Barleycorn 3:29
6. Drinkin' with God 3:47
7. Music of the Night 3:53
8. Misty Morning Night 4:16
9. Tales of the Road 3:45
10. Poitin Valley 3:53
11. Last Orders 5:09
