TOP TEN 2011 - SEND YOUR VOTES

The year is nearly over, so it's time to choose the best recordings of the year.

This year I have made some changes.

1) Three CDs can be won. A draw will decide the 3 winners.

2) I have decided to include some albums that were released at the end of 2010. Even if they were released in 2010, I think that we can consider them as 2011 releases. Besides, they were not voted in any top ten list last year.

3) There are two categories: albums and EPs. The second category covers mini-albums, EPs and/or demos.

4) For the full albums, the list will be a Top Ten

5) For the EPs, the list will be a Top Five

6) You have to send a full Top Ten list and a full Top Five list. E-mails voting only one album will not be valid.

7) The deadline is 31 December 2011. The list will be posted at the beginning of January 2012.

You can pick your list from the following albums and EPs. Remember that you can include any other Celtic punk or Celtic rock recording that has been released in 2011 even if it is not listed below.

Please send your list of the best recordings of 2011 to the following e-mail:

"The Stoutfellows" (1999)
"Stout FM" (2000)
"Stout It Out Loud" (Live, Unreleased, 15 tracks, 2002)

Celtic rockers The Stoutfellows have returned to the scene for a one-off show at The Bog Irish Bar, Cashel Mall on Saturday, July 5th - 10pm until late.

The band originally formed at the start of 1999 and up until the end of 2002 they toured and played to crowds up and down the country as well as overseas. The Stoutfellows also managed to release two full length albums in it's tenure, "The Stoutfellows" (1999) and "Stout FM" (2000). Their third album, a live effort taped at the now defunct Jolly Poacher, titled "Stout It Out Loud" (2002) was to be released in 2002 but was shelved when the band stopped playing and eventually broke up. Tracks from the album can still be heard on the bands' MySpace site for free.

"The Stoutfellows play a high energy brand of Celtic flavored rock music, covering artists such as The Pogues, Steve Earle, The Waterboys and Van Morrison. They also play their own original music which has proved to be a hit live."

"The Stoutfellows, the four piece 'Celtic Rock' band from Christchurch, brimming with energy and strong musical talent, can lay claim to being the best band in their field. Some may argue with that statement. And why not? It is a rather bold one. But after you see the amount of work that The Stoutfellows have put into their craft - the tours, the recordings, and dedication to being the best - perhaps then you'll get a greater insight as to why the band lays claim to being the best in the business of rock 'n' roll (or rock 'n' reel as the case may be!)

This first line up of the band in January 1999 (Dan MacMillan, Nick Laird, Geoff Snowsil and Peter Malthus) recorded and released a self titled CD, The Stoutfellows' first, that went on to sell around 1,000 copies. The album was sold at shows and quickly became a very popular recording in it's own right - still sought after today. But halfway through the year saw the depature of Geoff Snowsil. His replacement came in the form of Scott Spatcher-Harrison, a guitarist for a Christchurch metal band called HUMAN. Nick took over on the mandolin while Scott played guitar and the new line up continued on.

It was after a trip to play in Australia and another tour around New Zealand that original band members Dan McMillan (drums) and Nick Laird (mandolin) announced that they were leaving the band. The fellows picked to replace them were Simon Fox and Andrew Boon respectively. And it was with this new line up in July 2001 that The Stoutfellows picked up steam and played their collective heart out to big crowds around NZ. Along the way the lads obtained backing from Musicworks NZ, the largest musical instrument retailer in the country, and also Jamesons Irish Whiskey lent a well needed hand too! (Thanks chaps!) It was during this time that the idea for album 3 began to take shape.

In February 2002, The Stoutfellows decided to record their next album at one of their favourite LIVE venues - The Jolly Poacher Tavern in Christchurch. On Saturday the 9th of February 2002, they packed the place out and belted out 15 tracks of high energy Celtic Rock, all captured by Rob Mays of Avalanche Studios, and it all boiled down into what was to be the last Stoutfellows CD titled "Stout It Out Loud". The band lost founding member Peter Malthus and release of the album was put on hold indefinitely.

The band hired Amy Sutherland to come in and play bass as a permanent band member but it all came to end on New Year's of 2002 when Scott parted ways with the band and it was agreed that there was to be no more Stoutfellows activity."

Paddy Whetman: "Goat Music One" JUDMUSIC-CD003

"The long awaited release from Paddy Whetman (AKA.Hamish McDoodle) was released on the 01/09/05.

"Goat Music One" is a collection of Paddy`s works from the last five years, plus some new tracks.

The Album also features Ali Roberts on vocals and Stevie `G' Green on Drums and Percussion."

"The creative force behind Goat Music, Paddy Whetman has produced music in a wide variety of styles ranging from 'death reggae', in 'pipes from hell' to 'celtic techno' in 'bagpipes make my balls itch'. Although mostly 'dance' music his approach has always been to avoid limiting his music to one style. In his musical career, Paddy has played in numerous bands, including his own creation, “Hamish McDoodle and the kicking Keltic kaos krew”, with Ali Roberts (Ali Agogo) and Steve Green (Mr Modesty). Hamish was a character he created to front the band, dressed in kilt, horned helmet and goatskin waistcoat decorated with bones and feathers. Much of the music features the Eryri bagpipes, Hamish's sidekick. The pipes were designed and built by Paddy, an experienced engineer. The reed is made of steel and has an electromagnetic pickup fixed over it so that it can be made to sound like an electric guitar, sometimes dubbed 'Jimi Hendrix on the bagpipes', he plugs the pipes into guitar effects pedals creating powerfully distorted and pitch-shifted sounds featured heavily on 'yehunsaya' and 'pipes from hell'. This, combined with Paddy's innovative production skills, makes this music unique, never having been done before. Much of the music, with the primitive sound of the pipes, the mysterious chanting and evocative drones has a spiritual 'celtic' feel conjuring up images of mythical armies marching into battle, strange alien forces, death, mourning and rebirth. Some of it is perverse and comical, 'bagpipes make my balls itch' with it's unlikely techno 303 sound and 'plastic' 808 drums. 'Pipes from hell' could be described as being fairly dark and twisted, with telling lyrics by Ali Roberts and distorted bagpipe sounds. Some of you may remember some of these tracks from a few years ago, when downloads of Paddy’s music on the now defunct “MP3.com” totalled more than 170,000, proof of the popularity of “Goat Music”…enjoy! REVIEW - MUTINY BAY "The Second Battle of Vinegar Hill" (2011)

Mutiny Bay "The Second Battle of Vinegar Hill"
Release date: October 2011
Running time: 39:04, 10 tracks

Recently I have read on Facebook some comments stating that the Celtic punk coming from Australia was the best because every single band has its own sound: Between the Wars, The Ramshackle Army, The Rumjacks

The latest addition to the Aussie bands’ list is Mutiny Bay. This four-piece band hails from Brisbane and it was formerly known as Sled. Emil (vocals and guitar), Adrian (mandolin), Max (bass) and Matt (drums and percussion) have released a catchy “back to basics” album. Most of the tracks are punk music with a Celtic twist based on the mandolin and guitar. However, special guest Phill Brixton plays tin whistle and Uilleann pipes on several tracks and the final result is really amazing.

The music is apparently simple, but effective and lyrics are very interesting: shanties (“3 Shots of Whiskey”), songs about violence against women and children (“Silenced”), workers’ rights (“Working Life”) or coming back home (“Coming Home”).

These are the songs that you should not miss: “Killers & Liars”, a song featuring tin whistle and mandolin, punk pop with great guitar work, “Final Toast”, another punk number with a good whistle intro, “Working Life” a punk song with the energy of the Tartan Hearts but without pipes, “Coming Home”, another punk pop number with a catchy chorus and excellent mandolin and guitar. And, above all, the two tracks on which the Uileann pipes are featured: “Heart Strings” and “10 Long Years” (featuring the Kesh Jig).

The Second Battle of Vinegar Hill” is a good starting point for Mutiny Bay’s career. I expect that these 4 guys will ask Phill Brixton to join the band on a permanent basis. But, even if their new songs are performed only with four instruments, this won’t be a drawback, since their energy and attitude is above average.

Tracklist:

01 - Beyond the Horizons 3:07
02 - Ghosts of Freedom 3:12
03 - 3 Shots of Whiskey 4:02
04 - Killers & Liars 3:36
05 - Silenced 4:22
06 - Final Toast 3:32
07 - Heart Strings 5:16
08 - Working Life 3:35
09 - Coming Home 4:13
10 - 10 Long Years 4:03

VIDEO - SIGELPA "Molly Malone"

Sigelpa "Molly Malone"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8DDbN_ia3E

Molly Malone era una puta
No es masturbava mai pensant en mi
Però quan follàvem em deia que sí
Però quan follàvem em deia que sí

I tu ara nen què cony em demanes?
Que sigui teva i et demani permís?
Només dic que si m'estimessis a mi
No follaries amb tot el país
Que tu no tens instints?!

M'agradaria saber que és amor, només ser-hi jo
Tens por que un altre ho faci millor? I que te'n vagis amb ell, i que em deixis sol!
perquè estimi més t'has de posar gelós?
Puta mania d'anar de dos en dos

Set mil milions de persones al món
I pretens que em tanqui amb un de sol?
L'amor i el sexe són només un joc
I tu tries normes i jugadors
Fidels a què, qui, com?!

Si l'amor és cec i el sexe animal
Que algú em defineixi la fidelitat
El meu problema és que m'han contaminat
De pors absurdes a la promisqüitat

Tu experimentes, que el món és molt gran
I jo enveges, inseguretat
Història trista el món m'ha putejat
Educant-me en la puta fidelitat

I no penso anar en contra el meu cor
Encara que això no ho he triat
El meu cervell mai hi estarà d'acord
Però jo em respecto i passo molt de fer-me mal

Història trista, no puc estar amb tu

REVIEW - SMOKEY BASTARD “Tales from the Wasteland” Bomber Music (2011)

Smokey Bastard “Tales from the Wasteland” Bomber Music
Release date: 31 October 2011
Running time: 41:19, 13 tracks

Smokey Bastard defined themselves as the UK's answer to Flogging Molly and Dropckick Murphys. Their 12 track debut album ”Propping Up the Floor” was released in 2009 and I think that it made both PaddyRock and Shite’n’Onions top ten CD list of that year.

IMHO, “Propping Up the Floor” was an overrated album, as it was quite irregular. However, some tracks were excellent and they made me feel that, even if they have failed with their debut album, their future could be very interesting.

Their brand new album, “Tales from the Wasteland” is the evidence that actually they deserved more credit. The Flogging Molly and DKM influences are still there (FM on ”Wasteland" and DKM on “Eden Home” and “Cheer Up Love”) but they are open now to other sounds. for instance that of The Dreadnoughts (“Mongrel”, “Yuppie Dracula” and “Bad Reception”). Moreover, there are a couple of a capella songs (“My Song John” and “Boatepitaph”) and, fortunately, only one traditional number, The Morrison’s Jig on the track 6 tune set, “Mong Some Hoof”. I don’t know if the last track is a pisstake or a tribute, but I feel that the cover of Abba's “Mamma Mia” is great. Maybe the only weak point of the album, and I admit that it’s quite subjective, is track 11, “Dear Mol” (sorry, I don’t like the girl’s vocals)

Smokey Bastard’s second effort is far better than their debut album. Excellent mandolin and banjo sound backed by accordion and fiddle. Check out the following songs: “Wasteland”, “Eden Home”, “Mongrel” (The Dreadnoughts meet Talco),“Yuppie Dracula”, “Cheer Up Love” and “Aspirations I Have Some” (a well written song that starts as a pop-punk number and evolves into something different). Well done, boys!

Tracklist:

01 – Wasteland 3:43
02 – Token Folkin 0:42
03 – Eden Home (PT I) 3:35
04 – Mongrel 5:21
05 – My Son John 1:40
06 – Mong Some Hoof 3:33
07 – Yuppie Dracula 3:38
08 – Boatepitaph (Pt II) 0:44
09 – Cheer Up, Love (Worst Things Happen at Sea) (Pt III) 2:31
10 – Aspirations I Have Some 4:50
11 – Dear Mol 2:39
12 – Bad Reception 4:42
13 – Mamma Mia 3:12

SHOULD SMOKEY BASTARD BE BANNED?

I have been recently told that the London Celtic Punks collective and other Celtic punks fans have turned their back on the band from Reading Smokey Bastard. The last straw would have been a recent interview in which the band was asked about people's biggest misconception about the folk punk genre. As a result, a discussion took place on the band’s Facebook wall and both parties decided to part company.

I have read the interview and the only thing that I can say about that answer is that I find it sad. I understand what the band wanted to say and, to a certain degree, I agree with them. However, I don’t like how they said it. I feel that they could have said the same message without mentioning the name of another band. Anyway, we all know that the story of rock’n’roll, punk and pop music is full of these provocative opinions and that is not enough to put them on a black list.

As far as other points are concerned, the members of the band have clearly showed their position. I feel that unfortunately the relationship between London Celtic Punks and Smokey Bastard has not been good from the very beginning and it seems to be a problem of incompatibility.

Therefore, I am not going to remove the “Yuppie Dracula” video from the blog and I am going to post the review of their second album (by the way, an excellent album). On this blog I only write about music and I don’t find any offense on Smokey Bastard’s lyrics. I’m not a judge and I think that every fan can draw his own conclusions (you can read the interview and the Facebook discussion clicking here. If you need more information, please contact London Celtic Punks and Smokey Bastard)

On the other hand I would like to say that this doesn’t mean that I’m taking a position against London Celtic Punks. The fact that I have decided not to boycott Smokey Bastard doesn’t mean that I’m backing the band. As I have told above, I feel that they have a problem of incompatibility. London Celtic Punks are doing a great job and I hope that they will respect my decision as I respect theirs.

THE DREADNOUGHTS - BOOK AND VIDEO

"I'm not sure if you've heard yet, but recently a book and a video based around Vancouver's polka-klezmer-celtic-cider-folk-punk band The Dreadnoughts were released.

The book is called This Place Is Awesome and it's the story of survival in the face of overwhelming amounts of cider. I wrote it after spending a week with them touring Britain on their first European tour. Half of it is stories of trying to survive in that travelling booze circus, and the other half is photographic evidence. There are more details about it at

http://www.adampwsmith.com

The video was shot during a week in Poland in July of this year and it's for the songs Polka Never Dies. It answers the burning question "how long do you have to wait before you see one of the band members get set on fire?" (the answer, in this case, is about two and a half minutes).

You can find the video online at
